This week's parsha includes Yaakov's final blessings to his children. Yehudah's blessing is: {:he} ><b>ח</b> יהודה אתה יודוך אחיך ידך בערף איביך; ישתחוו לך בני אביך׃ <b>ט</b> גור אריה יהודה מטרף בני עלית; כרע רבץ כאריה וכלביא מי יקימנו׃ <b>י</b> לא יסור שבט מיהודה ומחקק מבין רגליו עד כי יבא שילה ולו יקהת עמים׃ <b>יא</b> אסרי לגפן עירה ולשרקה בני אתנו; כבס ביין לבשו ובדם ענבים סותה׃ <b>יב</b> חכלילי עינים מיין; ולבן שנים מחלב׃ --בראשית פרק מט What does that last line mean? חכלילי only appears twice in all תנ״ך, once here, and once in משלי (which we will cite). >Red eyed from wine, and white toothed from milk. --Artscroll Chumash, Genesis 49:12 And that is taken (as is the policy of the Artscroll Chumash) from Rashi: {:he} ><em>חכלילי</em>: לשון אדם, כתרגומו. וכן (משלי כג:כט) לְמִי חַכְלִלוּת עֵינָיִם, שכן דרך שותי יין עיניהם מאדימין. --רש״י, בראשית מט:יב But while "red-eyed from wine" does illustrate how fruitful Yehudah's land will be, it doesn't seem like much of a blessing. ><em>his eyes shall be red with wine</em>: This rendering is absurd. According to it, Judah's eyes are red from excessive drinking and Jacob's blessing is that Judah should be a drunkard! --Hertz Chumash, Genesis XLIX:12 And in fact, Rashi's proof text in משלי is all about how evil wine is: {:he} ><b>כ</b> אל תהי בסבאי יין בזללי בשר למו׃...<b>כט</b> למי אוי למי אבוי למי מדינים למי שיח למי פצעים חנם; למי חכללות עינים׃ <b>ל</b> למאחרים על היין לבאים לחקר ממסך׃...<b>לג</b> עיניך יראו זרות; ולבך ידבר תהפכות׃ --משלי פרק כג {:he} ><em>למי חכלילות עינים</em>: מרוב יין מאדימים עיניו; וגנאי הוא. --רש״י, משלי כג:כט It's so negative, that Onkelos (whom Rashi cites to prove that חכלילי means "red") takes the whole pasuk as metaphoric: {:he} >יְסַמְּקוּן טוּרוֹהִי בְּכַרְמוֹהִי יְטוּפוּן נַעֲווֹהִי בַּחֲמָר יְחַוְּרָן בִּקְעֲתֵיהּ בְּעִיבוּר וּבְעֶדְרֵי עָנָא׃ --תרגום אונקלוס, בראשית מט:יב And Rashi acknowledges that, but would rather take the pasuk literally: {:he} ><em>מחלב</em>: מרב חלב, שיהא בארצו מרעה טוב לעדרי צאן; וכן פרוש המקרא: אדם עינים יהא מרב יין ולבן שנים יהא מרב חלב. > ולפי תרגומו עינים לשון הרים, שמשם צופים למרחוק, ועוד תרגמו בפנים אחרים, לשון מעינות וקלוח היקבים...יחורן בקעתה–תרגום שנים, לשון שני הסלעים. --רש״י, בראשית מט:יב Yehudah will have so much wine his eyes will be bloodshot, and so much milk his teeth will be white. The metaphoric approach of Onkelos is worth mentioning, but it's not the primary meaning. That is a problem: {:he} >תמה אני על פה קדוש כמו רש"י למה נדחק בכל הדחקים שאין בהם צורך כלל, כי ידוע כי אונקלוס הוא תרגום בא לפרש כוונת הכתוב, ומפני שהוקשה לו כי ”חכלילי“ אין זה דבר טוב אבל הוא רע מאד להיות לאדם ”חכלילי עינים“, כמו שאמר הכתוב "למי חכלילי עינים למאחרים על היין", והרי הכתוב מגנה אותם, ולפיכך תרגם אונקלוס כוונת הענין, שאין הפירוש כלל שיהיה לו חכלילי עינים, אלא שפירושו על ההרים שיהיו אדומים, כי הכתוב לא בא להגיד רק כל כך יהיה היין רב. --גור אריה, בראשית מט:יב ---- Ramban reads חכלילי עינים/חכלילות עינים not as "red eyes" but as "colored eyes", referring to makeup, eye shadow, what in the gemara is called כחול עינים. In modern Hebrew, כחול means "blue" but in the gemara meant "kohl", the ancient pigment made from antimony ore. {:he} ><em>חכלילי עינים</em>:...והנראה בעיני שהוא הפוך מן (יחזקאל כג:מ) כָּחַלְתְּ עֵינַיִךְ ונכפלה בו הלמ"ד כמנהג רבים, והוא כענין מכחול העינים...וכן שמו בערבי "אל כחול". יאמר שהוא כחול העינים מן היין כי כאשר אחרים כוחלים אותם בפוך שהוא ה"אל כחול"...וכמו שהאחרים מלבנים שיניהם בתמרוקים כן ילבן אותם בחלב, והמשל לרבוי היין והחלב בארצו...יאמר למי חכלילות עינים שיצטרך לכחול עיניו תמיד למאחרים על היין...וזה פירוש וענין נכון. --רמב"ן, בראשית מט:יב By an astounding coincidence, that is where our word "alcohol" came from, well after Ramban: ><dl> <dt>alcohol</dt> <dd>..."fine powder produced by sublimation," from Medieval Latin alcohol "powdered ore of antimony," from Arabic <i lang=ar>al-kuhul</i> "kohl," the fine metallic powder used to darken the eyelids.</dd> <dd>...The sense of "intoxicating ingredient in strong liquor" is attested by 1753, short for alcohol of wine, which then was extended to "the intoxicating element in fermented liquors."</dd> </dl> <footer class=source>Online Etymology Dictionary, <a href=https://www.etymonline.com/word/alcohol>Alcohol</a></footer> But for Ramban, חכלילי עינים has nothing to do with being drunk, but with having so much wine that they could use it as makeup, parallel to כבס ביין לבשו. ---- But the word is חכלילי, not כחול. There's another way to look at this word. This past week was עשרה בטבת. One of the calamities that we recall on that fast day was the translation of the Torah into Greek: {:he} >בח' בטבת נכתבה התורה יונית בימי תלמי המלך והחושך בא לעולם שלשת ימים. --מגילת תענית, אדר כ חז״ל intentionally bowlderized their translation (see מגילה ט,א) to smooth over any difficulties, so it's often worth seeing how they translated difficult psukim. {:el} >Χαροποὶ οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ οἴνου καὶ λευκοὶ οἱ ὀδόντες αὐτοῦ ἢ γάλα. > His eyes shall be more cheering than wine, and his teeth whiter than milk. --[Septuagint, Genesis 49:12](http://ericlevy.com/lxx/?Book=Gen&Chapter=49&Translation=Brenton) ><dl> <dt>χαροπό</dt> <dd>cheerful</dd> </dl> <footer class=source>Google Translate, <a href=https://translate.google.com/?sl=el&tl=en&text=%CF%87%CE%B1%CF%81%CE%BF%CF%80%CF%8C%09&op=translate>χαροπό</a></footer> The key part of this translation is that מיין and מחלב do not mean "from wine and milk" but "more than wine and milk", so "teeth whiter than milk" is a nice blessing. "Eyes redder than wine" would still be a problem, so it is understood as meaning "shining" or "sparkling", hence "cheerful" to himself, and "cheering" to others. And that is actually how חז״ל saw this entire pasuk: {:he} >אמר רבי יוחנן: טוב המלבין שינים לחבירו [ביאור שטיינזלץ: בחיוך] יותר ממשקהו חלב, שנאמר ”ולבן שנים מחלב“ אל תקרי לְבֶן שינים אלא לִבּוּן שינים. --כתובות קיא,ב Now *that's* a ברכה. Despite the responsibilities of לא יסור שבט מיהודה ומחקק מבין רגליו, he will always have a smile. And that smile will extend to his eyes. >A Duchenne smile is the one that reaches your eyes, making the corners wrinkle up with crow’s feet. It’s the smile most of us recognize as the most authentic expression of happiness. > ...This kind of smile influences how other people see you: Duchenne smiles make you seem trustworthy and generous, which may make people respond positively to you in a variety of settings. > Smiling with your eyes and your mouth can lift your mood, calm you down, and help you forge connections with other people. --[_Smiling with Your Eyes: What Exactly Is a Duchenne Smile?_](https://www.healthline.com/health/duchenne-smile) The ambiguity of the Greek: do we translate חכלילי as "cheerful" or "cheering"? is intentional. Yehudah will be happy and he will make others happy, by showing them his smile, the whites of his teeth and the sparkle in his eyes. And it will be "more than wine": wine makes people happy, but it's false. Yehudah will be the real thing. {:he} >ויין ישמח לבב אנוש להצהיל פנים משמן; ולחם לבב אנוש יסעד׃ --תהלים קד:טו Yehudah's ברכה is that he can smile. What makes this ברכה more poignant is that Yaakov could not: {:he} ><b>ח</b> ויאמר פרעה אל יעקב; כמה ימי שני חייך׃ <b>ט</b> ויאמר יעקב אל פרעה ימי שני מגורי שלשים ומאת שנה; מעט ורעים היו ימי שני חיי ולא השיגו את ימי שני חיי אבתי בימי מגוריהם׃ --בראשית פרק מז {:he} >ונראה לי כי יעקב אבינו זרקה בו שיבה והיה נראה זקן מאד ופרעה תמה על זקנותו. --רמב״ן, בראשית מז:ח {:he} ><em>כמה ימי שני חייך</em>: פשט לפי שראהו זקן מאד ושערות ראשו וזקנו לבנות מרוב הזקנה שאל כן. והוא ענהו: ימי מגורי שלשים ומאת שנה מעט ורעים, כלומר, מעטים הם שנותי אלא מתוך רעות שהיה לי קפצה עלי זקנה. > מדרש: בשעה שאמר יעקב מעט ורעים היו, אמר לו הקב"ה: אני מלטתיך מעשו ומלבן והחזרתי לך דינה גם יוסף, ואתה מתרעם על חייך שהם מעט ורעים? חייך, שמנין התיבות שיש מן ”ויאמר“ עד ”בימי מגורי“ כך יחסרו משנותיך, שלא תחיה כחיי יצחק אביך. והם ל"ג תיבות ובמנין זה נחסרו מחייו שהרי יצחק חי ק"פ שנה ויעקב לא חי אלא קמ"ז. --דעת זקנים, בראשית מז:ח Everyone asks on the דעת זקנים: OK, Yaakov complained. But his complaint was only 21 words. Why does the midrash start the count from ויאמר פרעה אל יעקב? The answer given is that he wore his misery on his face. The fact that Pharaoh asked, that he was shocked by how aged and care-worn Yaakov appeared, was a sign that Yaakov was not חכלילי עינים. And that's a lesson for us, how important it is to show a smile to others. {:he} >שמאי אומר...הוי מקבל את כל האדם בסבר פנים יפות --משנה אבות א:טו {:he} ><em>והוי מקבל את כל האדם בסבר פנים יפות</em>: כיצד? מלמד שאם נתן אדם לחבירו כל מתנות טובות שבעולם ופניו (זעומות) [כבושים] בארץ, מעלה עליו הכתוב כאילו לא נתן לו כלום. אבל המקבל את חבירו בסבר פנים יפות, אפילו לא נתן לו כלום, מעלה עליו הכתוב כאילו נתן לו כל מתנות טובות שבעולם. --אבות דרבי נתן יג ---- That's a nice thought. But what do we do about Rashi? Surely Rashi knew the gemara, and understood the difficulty with the "bloodshot eyes" translation. I'm going to try to defend Rashi. That's hard, when even the Maharal says תמה אני על פה קדוש כמו רש״י. The term יין וחלב occurs elsewhere in תנ״ך: {:he} >הוי כל צמא לכו למים ואשר אין לו כסף; לכו שברו ואכלו ולכו שברו בלוא כסף ובלוא מחיר יין וחלב׃ --ישעיהו נה:א {:he} >באתי לגני אחתי כלה אריתי מורי עם בשמי אכלתי יערי עם דבשי *שתיתי ייני עם חלבי*; אכלו רעים שתו ושכרו דודים׃ --שיר השירים ה:א They are used metaphorically, but clearly the vehicle of the metaphor (the "metaphee") must have some meaning. Sforno implies that שתיתי ייני עם חלבי refers to the drinks of young and old. {:he} ><em>שתיתי ייני עם חלבי</em>: מלמדי תינוקות עם תינוקות של בית רבן. --ספורנו, שיר השירים ה:א These are social drinks; at a party, you serve liquor to the adults and milkshakes to the kids. Every one knows Rashi was a vintner (everyone except Hyim Soloveitchik, according to [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rashi)). He understood the value of wine, ויין ישמח לבב אנוש. I would assume that Rashi would read אדם עינים יהא מרב יין not as "bloodshot" but "shining", reflecting the cheerfulness of the Septuagint. There is a place for wine as a social lubricant, and the ברכה to Yehudah is that he would be the center of אתה יודוך אחיך, not dominating them but bringing them all together with a smile and a drink. >There’s a reason that wine is served during parties and many other events.
