<p>There's an easy-to-miss comment in this week's parasha that, when you stop to think about it, is very difficult:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ה</b> ראה למדתי אתכם חקים ומשפטים כאשר צוני ה׳ אלקי; לעשות כן בקרב הארץ אשר אתם באים שמה לרשתה׃ <b>ו</b> ושמרתם ועשיתם כי הוא חכמתכם ובינתכם לעיני העמים; אשר ישמעון את כל החקים האלה ואמרו רק עם חכם ונבון הגוי הגדול הזה׃ <b>ז</b> כי מי גוי גדול אשר לו אלקים קרבים אליו כה׳ אלקינו בכל קראנו אליו׃ <b>ח</b> ומי גוי גדול אשר לו חקים ומשפטים צדיקם ככל התורה הזאת אשר אנכי נתן לפניכם היום׃</p> <footer class=source>דברים פרק ד</footer></blockquote> <p>What does it mean, ושמרתם ועשיתם כי הוא חכמתכם ובינתכם לעיני העמים? We should keep the Torah because other people think that the Torah is the fount of wisdom? Rashi explains that it means that if we obey the Torah, <em>we</em> will be considered wise:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p>בזאת תחשבו חכמים ונבונים לעיני העמים.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, דברים ד:ו, ד״ה כי הוא חכמתכם ובינתכם וגו׳</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>אז כשלא תשכחו אותם ותעשום על אמתתם תחשבו חכמים ונבונים ואם תעוותו אותם מתוך שכחה תחשבו שוטים</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, דברים ד:ט, ד״ה רק השמר לך וגו׳ פן תשכח את הדברים</footer></blockquote> <p>But that's still problematic. We should keep the Torah <em>because</em>--כי--we will be considered wise? Why does the opinion of the world matter? If לעיני העמים the Torah was a pack of arbitrary nonsense, would that absolve us from obeying it? I tell my kids when they argue with each other that people find it very difficult to be right. We always need other people to validate our opinions. That's why comments on the internet are so emotional: it's not that I feel a responsibility to make sure you have the right opinion; it's that <em>I</em> am not secure in my opinion if you don't agree with me.</p> <p><img src="http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/duty_calls.png" alt="Duty Calls: Someone is Wrong on the Internet" /></p> <p>But that is clearly the wrong attitude. The כלי יקר puts a negative spin on it, that we need the reassurance that we will not be mocked when we keep the Torah:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p>ביאור הענין שאם תעלה על לבבכם לומר מאחר שהאומות מונין את ישראל על שמירת החקים א״כ אין בהם ממש, כי לפעמים אדם מונע עצמו מאיזו דבר מפני המלעיגים; על זה אמר אדרבה האומות ישבחו אתכם על שמירת החקים כי יש חקים שהם נעלמים מעין כל חי כפרה אדומה שנאמר (במדבר יט:ב) ויקחו אליך פרה לכולם חקה אפילו שלמה המלך אמר עליה אמרתי אחכמה והיא רחוקה ממני (קהלת ז:כג) אבל למשה נגלה סוד הפרה. ש״מ ששאר חקים נגלים ליחידי הדור אשר נתן ה׳ חכמה בהמה, ומה שפירש״י פר׳ חקת (במדבר יט:ב) שהשטן והאומות מונין עליה, אמת שכן הוא השומע חק זה לבד והאומות שואלים מה החקה הזאת לכם ובפיך אין מענה להשיב להם, פשיטא שיהיו מונין ומלעיגים. אבל העמים אשר ישמעון את כל החוקים האלה. ורובם יש להם טעם ודאי לא ילעיגו, כי רובם יתנו עדות על קצתם לומר כשם שחקים הללו יש בהם נועם נסתר כך הפרה וכל דכוותה יש בהם טעם ואם אינו נגלה לרוב ההמון עם מ״מ סוד ה׳ ליראיו נגלה. </p> <footer class=source>כלי יקר, דברים ו:ה</footer></blockquote> <p>But that is still problematic, for two reasons. There is a specific halacha to obey despite any mocking we experience:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p>יתגבר כארי לעמוד בבוקר לעבודת בוראו שיהא הוא מעורר השחר...ולא יתבייש מפני בני אדם המלעיגים עליו בעבודת השי״ת גם בהצנע לכת ובשכבו על משכבו ידע לפני מי הוא שוכב ומיד שיעור משנתו יקום בזריזות לעבודת בוראו יתברך ויתעלה. </p> <footer class=source>שולחן ערוך אורח חיים, א:א</footer></blockquote> <p>And what does it mean to say <span lang=he>שמרתם ועשיתם <em>כי</em> הוא חכמתכם ובינתכם לעיני העמים</span>? Even if ה׳ is reassuring us that the nations will not mock us, how can that be the reason for keeping the חקים ומשפטים? Maybe it removes a reason not to keep them, but this seems like a positive cause. We keep the mitzvot <em>because</em> the nations find them wise!</p> <p>The Ramban points us in another direction. The opinion of the nations matters, not because of its effect on us, but because of the effect of the Torah on them:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p> ואמר כי בחוקים ובמשפטים תועלות גדולות, שהם תפארת לעושיהם מן האדם, ואפילו שונאיהם ישבחו אותם בהם. </p> <footer class=source>רמב״ן, דברים ד:ו</footer></blockquote> <p>The goal is for Israel as a people in Israel the land to be the "light unto the nations"; לעשות כן בקרב הארץ. That should be the purpose of our existence, and of our dwelling in the land. The implication, as stated in the following psukim, is that if we do not keep the חקים ומשפטים, we will lose the privilege of living in the land. And there's a message to us, in these days after Tisha B'Av. If we fail in that mission, the mission does not go away but it puts the onus on each of us as individuals. As the Gemara says:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p>ואמר רבי אלעזר: לא הגלה הקדוש ברוך הוא את ישראל לבין האומות אלא כדי שיתוספו עליהם גרים, שנאמר (הושע ב) וזרעתיה לי בארץ. כלום אדם זורע סאה אלא להכניס כמה כורין. ורבי יוחנן אמר מהכא: ורחמתי את לא רחמה [ואמרתי ללא עמי עמי אתה].</p> <footer class=source>פסחים פז,ב</footer></blockquote> <p>How can we say the purpose of גלות is to proselytize? Exile is a <em>punishment</em>, and we aren't supposed to encourage conversion! The Marasha explains:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p>דאי משום עונש חטאם אפשר היה לו לעונשם בדברים אחרים; אלא כדי שיתוספו עליהם גרים <em>דהיינו לפרסם האמונה גם בשאר עובדי כוכבים</em>.</p> <footer class=source>מהרש״א, חידושי אגדות, שם, ד״ה לא הגלה כו׳</footer></blockquote> <p>Rabbi Zev Leff of Aish Hatorah quotes the Netziv:</p> <blockquote lang=en><p>The Netziv writes (Ha'amek Davar to Numbers 14:21) that the goal of creation is that God's glory fill the entire earth--i.e., that all human beings recognize Him...</p> <p>"When G-d will be King over the whole world, on that day will He be One and His Name one." (Zechariah 14:9)</p> ... <p>We, the Nation of Priests, represent G-d to the world by our exemplary lifestyle, and imbue the world with knowledge of His existence: "We are a light unto the nations." (Isaiah 42:6)</p> <p>The Netziv explains that this function could have been achieved by the Jewish people settling in Israel and inspiring the entire world through an awareness of the miraculous Divine Providence that guides the Jew in his land. We did not merit this. As a consequence, it became necessary to spread the knowledge of God by living among the nations and causing them to witness how we sacrifice ourselves for God's Name. Our survival as a solitary lamb among 70 hungry wolves points to the existence of a Divine Creator, whose Divine Providence guides and protects His nation.</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://www.aish.com/tp/i/oai/48949091.html">Rabbi Zev Leff, <cite>Outlooks and Insights, Bo</cite></a></footer></blockquote> <p>There's an interesting twist that relates to our purpose as a role model for the world:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p>וראו כל עמי הארץ כי שם ה׳ נקרא עליך; ויראו ממך׃</p> <footer class=source>דברים כח:י</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>ומנין שהתפילין עוז הם לישראל דכתי' (דברים כח) וראו כל עמי הארץ כי שם ה׳ נקרא עליך ויראו ממך ותניא ר׳ אליעזר הגדול אומר אלו תפילין שבראש.</p> <footer class=source>ברכות ו,א</footer></blockquote> <p>Rav Leff continues:</p> <blockquote lang=en><p>The Sages explain that the verse, "All nations of the earth will see that G-d's Name has been called upon you and will respect and fear you," refers to the Tefillin placed on the head. The Vilna Gaon added that this means not just the Tefillin on the head but the Tefillin in the head--i.e. the internalized intention with which the Mitzvah is performed.</p> <p>The scorn of the nations of the world is not a sign of our perfection, but rather that something is lacking in our service of G-d, that we have failed in our role of leading a life of holiness...But when we fulfill our role properly, the entire world will want to share in our service of God.</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://www.aish.com/tp/i/oai/48949091.html">Rabbi Zev Leff, <cite>Outlooks and Insights, Bo</cite></a></footer></blockquote> <p>And when we fulfill out roles as individuals, we will אי״ה be given the opportunity to fulfill it as a nation, in ארץ ישראל.</p>
