<p>When Moshe and Aharon appeared before Pharaoh and Aharon threw down his staff, it turned into a snake, right? It's not so clear:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ח</b> ויאמר ה׳ אל משה ואל אהרן לאמר׃ <b>ט</b> כי ידבר אלכם פרעה לאמר תנו לכם מופת; ואמרת אל אהרן קח את מטך והשלך לפני פרעה יהי לתנין׃ <b>י</b> ויבא משה ואהרן אל פרעה ויעשו כן כאשר צוה ה׳; וישלך אהרן את מטהו לפני פרעה ולפני עבדיו ויהי לתנין׃ <b>יא</b> ויקרא גם פרעה לחכמים ולמכשפים; ויעשו גם הם חרטמי מצרים בלהטיהם כן׃ <b>יב</b> וישליכו איש מטהו ויהיו לתנינם; ויבלע מטה אהרן את מטתם׃ <b>יג</b> ויחזק לב פרעה ולא שמע אלהם: כאשר דבר ה׳׃</p> <footer class=source>שמות פרק ז</footer></blockquote> <p>What's a תנין? In modern Hebrew, it's a crocodile. Where does that come from? First, where does the snake come from?</p> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> ויען משה ויאמר והן לא יאמינו לי ולא ישמעו בקלי: כי יאמרו לא נראה אליך ה׳׃ <b>ב</b> ויאמר אליו ה׳ מזה (מה זה) בידך; ויאמר מטה׃ <b>ג</b> ויאמר השליכהו ארצה וישלכהו ארצה ויהי לנחש; וינס משה מפניו׃ <b>ד</b> ויאמר ה׳ אל משה שלח ידך ואחז בזנבו; וישלח ידו ויחזק בו ויהי למטה בכפו׃ </p> <p>...</p> <p><b>כט</b> וילך משה ואהרן; ויאספו את כל זקני בני ישראל׃ <b>ל</b> וידבר אהרן את כל הדברים אשר דבר ה׳ אל משה; ויעש האתת לעיני העם׃ <b>לא</b> ויאמן העם; וישמעו כי פקד ה׳ את בני ישראל וכי ראה את ענים ויקדו וישתחוו׃</p> <footer class=source>שמות פרק ד</footer></blockquote> <p>So the sign that Moshe makes for בני ישראל was certainly a snake, but the Torah uses a different word for the sign to Pharaoh. Rashi, however, translates that as:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p>נחש</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, שמות ז:ט, ד״ה לתנין</footer></blockquote> <p>And that is based on the תרגום יהונתן:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p>וְאָעֵל משֶׁה וְאַהֲרן לְוַת פַּרְעה וְעָבָדוּ הֵיכְדֵין הֵיכְמָא דְפַקֵיד יְיָ וּטְלַק אַהֲרן יַת חוּטְרֵיהּ קֳדָם מֵיחְמֵי פַּרְעה וְקָדָם מֵיחְמֵי עַבְדוֹי וַהֲוָה לְחוּרְמָנָא</p> <footer class=source>תרגום יהונתן, שמות ז:י</footer></blockquote> <p>And that is how the Septuagint translates it:</p> <blockquote lang=el><p>καὶ ἔρριψεν Ααρων τὴν ράβδον ἐναντίον Φαραω καὶ ἐναντίον τῶν θεραπόντων αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐγένετο <em>δράκων</em>.</p> <footer class=source>Septuagint, <i lang=la>loc. cit.</i></footer></blockquote> <p>δράκων is the origin of the word "dragon" but just means a serpent, a big snake. And this seems to be the way the word is used elsewhere in the Torah:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p>חמת תנינם יינם; וראש פתנים אכזר׃ </p> <footer class=source>דברים לב:לג</footer></blockquote> <p>So the כלי יקר explains the difference in terminology as simply reflecting a more dramatic display of ה׳'s might to Pharaoh:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p>הנה מקום אתי ליישב שוני הלשון וזה כי התנין הוא נחש גדול מסוכן ביותר</p> <footer class=source>כלי יקר, שם</footer></blockquote> <p>But most commentators feel that the תנין is actually a different animal entirely. To determine what that animal is, we will look at this week's harfotah. But first, I want to mention a mistranslation from איכה that implies that the תנין was a mammal:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p>גַּם תנין (תַּנִּים) חָלְצוּ שַׁד הֵינִיקוּ גּוּרֵיהֶן; בַּת עַמִּי לְאַכְזָר כי ענים (כַּיְעֵנִים) בַּמִּדְבָּר׃</p> <footer class=source>איכה ד:ג</footer></blockquote> <p>But the verb חָלְצוּ is in the plural so תַּנִּים must be plural; the pasuk is talking about an animal called the תן, generally translated as "jackal".</p> <p>The other place in the Torah we see the תנין is at creation:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>כ</b> ויאמר אלקים ישרצו המים שרץ נפש חיה; ועוף יעופף על הארץ על פני רקיע השמים׃ <b>כא</b> ויברא אלקים את התנינם הגדלים; ואת כל נפש החיה הרמשת אשר שרצו המים למינהם ואת כל עוף כנף למינהו וירא אלקים כי טוב׃ <b>כב</b> ויברך אתם אלקים לאמר: פרו ורבו ומלאו את המים בימים והעוף ירב בארץ׃ <b>כג</b> ויהי ערב ויהי בקר יום חמישי׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק א</footer></blockquote> <p>Here the תנין is an animal that lives in the sea, presumably the largest ones that symbolize the creation of animal life (note the use of the term ויברא):</p> <blockquote lang=he><p>הללו את ה׳ מן הארץ תנינים וכל תהמות׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים קמח:ז</footer></blockquote> <p>King James translates it as "sea monsters" but in context, "whales" would make sense. But it's hard to see Aharon's staff turning into a whale. That seems more silly that impressive. The שפתי חכמים says the term תנין depends on context; here, it is a snake:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p>כי שם התנין ביבשה הוא נחש ובמים הוא דג וכן פי׳ הרד״ק בשרש תנין</p> <footer class=source>שפתי חכמים, שמות ז:י</footer></blockquote> <p>Remember that a דג is not a biological "fish", but any animal that lives in the water (just as an עוף is not a bird but a flying animal).</p> <p>The מלבי״ם gives the origin of the "crocodile" translation based on יחזקאל:</p> {:he} >במיני הדגה יש גדולים מאד ונקראים תנינים, ובמצרים היו מאמינים שהיאור נילוס הוא קודש אלוה והוא מקבל כח מן השמש שהיה אלהי עליון אצלם, והיו עובדים את היאור בכל בוקר בצאת השמש כמו שפרעה יצא המימה בבקר. וכן היו עובדים אל התנינים שביאור שהיו אלהות אצלם, והיו אומרים שיש תנים אחד הגדול מכולם שהוא מושל על כולם, ופרעה נמשל אליו, שהיה אצלם גם כן אלוה וקראוהו <em>התנים הגדול הרובץ בתוך יאוריו</em>. --מלבי״ם, ספר הכרמל <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> בשנה העשרית בעשרי בשנים עשר לחדש היה דבר ה׳ אלי לאמר׃ <b>ב</b> בן אדם שים פניך על פרעה מלך מצרים; והנבא עליו ועל מצרים כלה׃ <b>ג</b> דבר ואמרת כה אמר אדני ה׳ הנני עליך פרעה מלך מצרים התנים הגדול הרבץ בתוך יאריו; אשר אמר לי יארי ואני עשיתני׃ <b>ד</b> ונתתי חחיים (חחים) בלחייך והדבקתי דגת יאריך בקשקשתיך; והעליתיך מתוך יאריך ואת כל דגת יאריך בקשקשתיך תדבק׃ <b>ה</b> ונטשתיך המדברה אותך ואת כל דגת יאריך על פני השדה תפול לא תאסף ולא תקבץ לחית הארץ ולעוף השמים נתתיך לאכלה׃ <b>ו</b> וידעו כל ישבי מצרים כי אני ה׳ יען היותם משענת קנה לבית ישראל׃ <b>ז</b> בתפשם בך בכפך (בכף) תרוץ ובקעת להם כל כתף; ובהשענם עליך תשבר והעמדת להם כל מתנים׃ {ס}</p> <footer class=source>יחזקאל פרק כט</footer></blockquote> <blockquote><p>What is the great tanin that lies in the rivers of Egypt? It is the Nile crocodile. This awesome beast grows to over twenty-one feet in length and was the top predator in Egypt. Crocodiles account for more human deaths than any other large animal. They will also kill lions, buffalos , giraffes and even sharks. The crocodile was the king of the Nile and was considered a god by the Egyptians. They embalmed hundreds them as mummies, wrapping them in strips of cloth, just as they did to humans. Even today, the crocodile is considered in Egypt to be a symbol of power, and it appears in murals celebrating their "victory" over Israel in the Yom Kippur war. In Yechezkel's prophecy, Pharaoh, human ruler of Egypt, appears as the great crocodile, ruler of the Nile. When Aharon threw down the staff, it turned into a tanin. The word tanin means "a serpentine creature." Sometimes this word can indeed refer to a snake. But in this case, it refers to a different serpentine creature: the crocodile , symbol of Pharaoh.</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://www.yutorah.org/lectures/lecture.cfm/731022/Rabbi_Nosson_Slifkin/Behold_the_Predator">Rabbi Natan Slifkin, <cite>Behold the Predator</cite></a></footer></blockquote> <blockquote><p>The Nile crocodile (<i lang=la>Crocodylus niloticus</i>) is an African crocodile and the second largest extant reptile in the world, after the saltwater crocodile. The Nile crocodile is quite widespread throughout sub-saharan Africa, occurring mostly in the central, eastern, southern and some western parts of the continent and lives in different types of aquatic environments such as lakes, rivers and marshlands. Although capable of living in saline environments, this species is rarely found in saltwater, but occasionally inhabits deltas and brackish lakes. The range of this species once stretched northward throughout the Nile, as far north as the Nile delta. On average the Nile crocodile is between 4.1 metres (13 ft) to 5 metres (16 ft), weighing around 410 kg (900 lb). However, specimens measuring 6.1 metres (20 ft) in length and weighing 900 kg (2,000 lb) are not uncommon. They have thick scaly skin that is heavily armored.</p> <p>The Nile crocodile is an opportunistic apex predator and a very aggressive species of crocodile that is capable of taking almost any animal within its range. They are generalists, taking a variety of prey. Their diet consists mostly of different species of fish, reptiles, birds and mammals. The Nile crocodile is an ambush predator and can wait for hours, days and even weeks for the suitable moment to attack. They are quite agile predators and wait for the opportunity for the prey item to come close within the range of attack. Even swift prey are not immune to attack. Like other crocodiles, Nile crocodiles have an extremely powerful bite that is unique amongst all animals and sharp conical teeth that sink into flesh allowing for a grip that is almost impossible to loosen. They can apply high levels of force for extended periods of time, a great advantage for holding down large prey underwater to drown.</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nile_crocodile">Wikipedia, <cite>Nile Crocodile</cite></a>, accessed 2013-12-22</footer></blockquote> <p>So the symbolism of Aharon's staff is very clear. Pharaoh, the all-powerful ("apex predator") Nile crocodile, is just a dead stick in ה׳'s hands. So why does Rashi insist on translating it as נחש? I don't think he is translating the word at all. He is drawing our attention to the previous "staff into animal" sign, pointing out that they are connected. He is establishing the narrative of ה׳'s manifestation in Egypt.</p> <p>The signs that Moshe had made for בני ישראל were not meant to intimidate them; they were meant to prove that ה׳ had appeared to Moshe and that He was about to redeem בני ישראל from Egypt. There were three signs; I think they corresponded to past, present and future. On the pasuk</p> <blockquote lang=he><p> וַיְהִי בַיָּמִים הָרַבִּים הָהֵם וַיָּמָת מֶלֶךְ מִצְרַיִם וַיֵּאָנְחוּ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל מִן הָעֲבֹדָה וַיִּזְעָקוּ וַתַּעַל שַׁוְעָתָם אֶל הָאֱלֹקִים מִן הָעֲבֹדָה׃</p> <footer class=source>שמות ב:כג</footer></blockquote> <p>Rashi brings the שמות רבה:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p>נצטרע והיה שוחט תינוקות ישראל ורוחץ בדמם</p> <footer class=source>רש״י; שם; ד״ה וימת מלך מצרים</footer></blockquote> <p>So the sign of צרעת represented Pharoah's previous affliction. The sign of the מטה represented Moshe's present mission to Pharaoh. And the sign of the water turning to blood, of course represented the final redemption through the ten plagues.</p> <hr/> <p>And speaking about the ten plagues, there's an interesting point about the second one. When we illustrate the plagues in children's books, we always use the frogs because they are so cute; it's a much less intimidating plague than wild animals or massive hailstorms. It is only used in this context (and elsewhere in תנ״ך discussing the plagues). What does it really mean?</p> <blockquote lang=he><p>והמפרשים נחלקו במלת צפרדעים. ורבים אמרו שהוא מין דג נמצא במצרים ויקרא בלשון ערב <em>אל־תמסח</em>, ויוצא מן הנהר וחוטף בני אדם. ואחרים אמרו כי הם הנמצאים ברובי הנהרות שמשמיעים קול והוא הנכון בעיני והוא הידוע.</p> <footer class=source>אבן עזרא, שמות ז:כט</footer></blockquote> <p>רבינו בחיי and אברבנל argue very strongly for the "al-timsah" interpretation, from the threat of נגף, from the fact of רק ביאר תשארנה, and from the description in תהילים‎:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>מג</b> אשר שם במצרים אתותיו; ומופתיו בשדה צען׃<br/> <b>מד</b> ויהפך לדם יאריהם; ונזליהם בל ישתיון׃<br/> <b>מה</b> ישלח בהם ערב ויאכלם; וצפרדע ותשחיתם׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים פרק עח</footer></blockquote> <p>The Netziv reads the text carefully--what does פסוק כט add?--and brings in another pasuk from תהילים‎:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>כט</b> הפך את מימיהם לדם; וימת את דגתם׃<br/> <b>ל</b> שרץ ארצם צפרדעים; בחדרי מלכיהם׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים פרק קה</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>וכאן כתיב <em>ובעמך</em> בשו״א היינו עם מיוחד שומרי ראש פרעה. ומש״ה כתיב בזה המקרא קודם לבכל עבדיך. משום דחשיבי יותר. וזה המכה היתירה לא שלטה בכל עמי פרעה אלא בו תחלה ובשומרי ראשו ובעבדיו המה שרי יועציו. והנה ידוע דעות שונות בין מפרשים ראשונים ז״ל אם היו הצפרדעים מין הידוע המשחית הנמצא עוד היום ביאור ונקרא (קראקאדיל) או הוא מין הנמצא ברובי הנהרות וצועקים ומכרכרים. ולפי דברינו שני הפרושים אמת. בכל ארץ מצרים היה מין השני ולא השחיתו. אך בבית פרעה ועמו ועבדיו יצאו מין הראשון מן היאור והיה משחיתים כדכתיב בתהלים ע״ח <em>ישלח בם ערוב ויאכלם וצפרדע ותשחיתם</em> וזה נכלל בלשון יעלו הצפרדעים. היינו המעולים שבצפרדעים.</p> <footer class=source>העמק דבר, שמות ז:כט</footer></blockquote> <p>So צפרדע was, like מכת דם, really a judgment on Egypt's gods; (שמות יב:יב)‎ בכל אלוהי מצרים אעשה שפטים.</p>
