I want to start, not with this week's parasha, but with a pasuk we quote twice a day: <blockquote lang=he><p>וְהוּא רַחוּם יְכַפֵּר עָוֺן וְלֹא יַשְׁחִית;<br/> וְהִרְבָּה לְהָשִׁיב אַפּוֹ; וְלֹא יָעִיר כָּל חֲמָתוֹ׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים עח:לח</footer></blockquote> It sounds very nice and uplifting but the underlying story is pretty bleak. It comes from תהילים פרק עח, a מַשְׂכִּיל (I would translate that as a "lecture") by אָסָף the Levi: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> מַשְׂכִּיל לְאָסָף;<br/> הַאֲזִינָה עַמִּי תּוֹרָתִי; הַטּוּ אָזְנְכֶם לְאִמְרֵי פִי׃<br/> <b>ב</b> אֶפְתְּחָה בְמָשָׁל פִּי; אַבִּיעָה חִידוֹת מִנִּי קֶדֶם׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים פרק עח</footer></blockquote> At 72 psukim, it's the second longest chapter in תהילים, so we can't go through it all (<a href="/Politically+Incorrect/">it took 3 sessions in the Tanach class</a>). Who was אָסָף? When David conquered Jerusalem and moved the ארון there, he appointed אָסָף as the chief musician: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ד</b> ויתן לפני ארון ה׳ מן הלוים משרתים; ולהזכיר ולהודות ולהלל לה׳ אלקי ישראל׃ </p> <p> <b>ה</b> אסף הראש ומשנהו זכריה; יעיאל ושמירמות ויחיאל ומתתיה ואליאב ובניהו ועבד אדם ויעיאל בכלי נבלים ובכנרות ואסף במצלתים משמיע׃</p> <footer class=source>דברי הימים א פרק טז</footer></blockquote> And he was more than a singer; תנ״ך calls him a נביא: <blockquote lang=he><p> לבני אסף זכור ויוסף ונתניה ואשראלה בני אסף; על יד אסף הַנִּבָּא על ידי המלך׃</p> <footer class=source>דברי הימים א כה:ב</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>ויאמר יחזקיהו המלך והשרים ללוים להלל לה׳ בדברי דויד ואסף החזה; ויהללו עד לשמחה ויקדו וישתחוו׃</p> <footer class=source>דברי הימים ב כט:ל</footer></blockquote> 12 chapters of תהילים are attributed to him, and they tend to be critical, lesson-oriented psalms. This one is no different. <hr/> It is a review of Jewish history from Egypt to contemporary times, going over the miracles that ה׳ did and the mistakes that the people made: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ח</b> וְלֹא יִהְיוּ כַּאֲבוֹתָם דּוֹר סוֹרֵר וּמֹרֶה;<br/> דּוֹר לֹא הֵכִין לִבּוֹ; וְלֹא נֶאֶמְנָה אֶת אֵ־ל רוּחוֹ׃<br/> ...<b>יב</b> נֶגֶד אֲבוֹתָם עָשָׂה פֶלֶא; בְּאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם שְׂדֵה צֹעַן׃<br/> <b>יג</b> בָּקַע יָם וַיַּעֲבִירֵם; וַיַּצֶּב מַיִם כְּמוֹ נֵד׃<br/> <b>יד</b> וַיַּנְחֵם בֶּעָנָן יוֹמָם; וְכָל הַלַּיְלָה בְּאוֹר אֵשׁ׃<br/> ...<b>טז</b> וַיּוֹצִא נוֹזְלִים מִסָּלַע; וַיּוֹרֶד כַּנְּהָרוֹת מָיִם׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים פרק עח</footer></blockquote> And the example of the sin of the people comes from this week's parasha: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יט</b> וַיְדַבְּרוּ בֵּאלֹקִים; אָמְרוּ הֲיוּכַל אֵ־ל לַעֲרֹךְ שֻׁלְחָן בַּמִּדְבָּר׃<br/> <b>כ</b> הֵן הִכָּה צוּר וַיָּזוּבוּ מַיִם וּנְחָלִים יִשְׁטֹפוּ;<br/> הֲגַם לֶחֶם יוּכַל תֵּת; אִם יָכִין שְׁאֵר לְעַמּוֹ׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים פרק עח</footer></blockquote> Here is how the Torah presents it: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> ויהי העם כמתאננים רע באזני ה׳; וישמע ה׳ ויחר אפו ותבער בם אש ה׳ ותאכל בקצה המחנה׃ <b>ב</b> ויצעק העם אל משה; ויתפלל משה אל ה׳ ותשקע האש׃ <b>ג</b> ויקרא שם המקום ההוא תבערה; כי בערה בם אש ה׳׃ <b>ד</b> והאספסף אשר בקרבו התאוו תאוה; וישבו ויבכו גם בני ישראל ויאמרו מי יאכלנו בשר׃ <b>ה</b> זכרנו את הדגה אשר נאכל במצרים חנם; את הקשאים ואת האבטחים ואת החציר ואת הבצלים ואת השומים׃ <b>ו</b> ועתה נפשנו יבשה אין כל בלתי אל המן עינינו׃...<b>י</b> וישמע משה את העם בכה למשפחתיו איש לפתח אהלו; ויחר אף ה׳ מאד ובעיני משה רע׃</p> ... <p><b>לא</b> ורוח נסע מאת ה׳ ויגז שלוים מן הים ויטש על המחנה כדרך יום כה וכדרך יום כה סביבות המחנה וכאמתים על פני הארץ׃ <b>לב</b> ויקם העם כל היום ההוא וכל הלילה וכל יום המחרת ויאספו את השלו הממעיט אסף עשרה חמרים; וישטחו להם שטוח סביבות המחנה׃ <b>לג</b> הבשר עודנו בין שניהם טרם יכרת; ואף ה׳ חרה בעם ויך ה׳ בעם מכה רבה מאד׃ <b>לד</b> ויקרא את שם המקום ההוא קברות התאוה; כי שם קברו את העם המתאוים׃ </p> <footer class=source>במדבר פרק יא</footer></blockquote> And Asaf's summary: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>כא</b> לָכֵן שָׁמַע ה׳ וַיִּתְעַבָּר;<br/> וְאֵשׁ נִשְּׂקָה בְיַעֲקֹב; וְגַם אַף עָלָה בְיִשְׂרָאֵל׃<br/> <b>כב</b> כִּי לֹא הֶאֱמִינוּ בֵּאלֹקִים; וְלֹא בָטְחוּ בִּישׁוּעָתוֹ׃<br/> ...<b>כז</b> וַיַּמְטֵר עֲלֵיהֶם כֶּעָפָר שְׁאֵר; וּכְחוֹל יַמִּים עוֹף כָּנָף׃<br/> <b>כח</b> וַיַּפֵּל בְּקֶרֶב מַחֲנֵהוּ; סָבִיב לְמִשְׁכְּנֹתָיו׃<br/> <b>כט</b> וַיֹּאכְלוּ וַיִּשְׂבְּעוּ מְאֹד; וְתַאֲוָתָם יָבִא לָהֶם׃<br/> <b>ל</b> לֹא זָרוּ מִתַּאֲוָתָם; עוֹד אָכְלָם בְּפִיהֶם׃<br/> <b>לא</b> וְאַף אֱלֹקִים עָלָה בָהֶם וַיַּהֲרֹג בְּמִשְׁמַנֵּיהֶם;<br/> וּבַחוּרֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל הִכְרִיעַ׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים פרק עח</footer></blockquote> I would read לכן שמע ה׳...ואש נשקה ביעקב as a reference to the previous incident of תבערה: "Thus ה׳ *had heard* and sent a fire". Asaf is saying that בני ישראל ignored the fact that they had just gone through the punishment for complaining. Therefore וימטר עליהם כעפר שאר,‎ ה׳ sent them the flesh they demanded, then ויהרג במשמניהם. It's an accurate, if poetic retelling. But why this story? Of all the times that בני ישראל rebelled, why this? Why not the Golden Calf or the Spies? I think that what is striking about קברות התאוה is the fact that it is immediately preceded by the incident of תבערה. They complain, get punished, and learn nothing. They immediately start complaining again. <blockquote lang=en><p>Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.</p> <footer class=source><a href="https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/George_Santayana#Vol._I,_Reason_in_Common_Sense">George Santayana</a></footer></blockquote> As Asaf puts it: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>לב</b> בְּכָל זֹאת חָטְאוּ עוֹד; וְלֹא הֶאֱמִינוּ בְּנִפְלְאוֹתָיו׃<br/> ...<b>לד</b> אִם הֲרָגָם וּדְרָשׁוּהוּ; וְשָׁבוּ וְשִׁחֲרוּ אֵל׃<br/> <b>לה</b> וַיִּזְכְּרוּ כִּי אֱלֹקִים צוּרָם; וְאֵ־ל עֶלְיוֹן גֹּאֲלָם׃<br/> <b>לו</b> וַיְפַתּוּהוּ בְּפִיהֶם; וּבִלְשׁוֹנָם יְכַזְּבוּ לוֹ׃<br/> <b>לז</b> וְלִבָּם לֹא נָכוֹן עִמּוֹ; וְלֹא נֶאֶמְנוּ בִּבְרִיתוֹ׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים פרק עח</footer></blockquote> And that continues in the cycle of Jewish history. The Jews forget ה׳, suffer, call out for mercy, ה׳ forgives them, but then they sin again. That is the message of פסוקים לב-לז. It's the central theme of ספר שופטים: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יא</b> ויעשו בני ישראל את הרע בעיני ה׳; ויעבדו את הבעלים׃ ...<b>יד</b> ויחר אף ה׳ בישראל ויתנם ביד שסים וישסו אותם; וימכרם ביד אויביהם מסביב ולא יכלו עוד לעמד לפני אויביהם׃ ...<b>יח</b> וכי הקים ה׳ להם שפטים והיה ה׳ עם השפט והושיעם מיד איביהם כל ימי השופט; כי ינחם ה׳ מנאקתם מפני לחציהם ודחקיהם׃ <b>יט</b> והיה במות השופט ישבו והשחיתו מאבותם ללכת אחרי אלהים אחרים לעבדם ולהשתחות להם; לא הפילו ממעלליהם ומדרכם הקשה׃ </p> <footer class=source>שופטים פרק ב</footer></blockquote> And this is the message of תבערה and קברות התאוה. They just got out of one fire and they go and provoke ה׳ again. They never learn. That's what Asaf wants his audience to hear: ולא יהיו כאבותם דור סורר ומרה. <hr/> And that's where the pasuk of וְהוּא רַחוּם comes in. It's the halfway point of the perek, the turning point, the <i lang=it> volta</i>: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>לח</b> וְהוּא רַחוּם יְכַפֵּר עָוֺן וְלֹא יַשְׁחִית;<br/> וְהִרְבָּה לְהָשִׁיב אַפּוֹ; וְלֹא יָעִיר כָּל חֲמָתוֹ׃<br/> <b>לט</b> וַיִּזְכֹּר כִּי בָשָׂר הֵמָּה; רוּחַ הוֹלֵךְ וְלֹא יָשׁוּב׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים פרק עח</footer></blockquote> וְהוּא רַחוּם is the statement that ה׳ won't destroy us completely even when we deserve it, over and over again: וְהִרְבָּה לְהָשִׁיב אַפּוֹ. <hr/> And the perek goes on (and on...), ending with the destruction of משכן שילה and addressing David and his new sanctuary in Jerusalem: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>נט</b> שָׁמַע אֱלֹקִים וַיִּתְעַבָּר; וַיִּמְאַס מְאֹד בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל׃<br/> <b>ס</b> וַיִּטֹּשׁ מִשְׁכַּן שִׁלוֹ; אֹהֶל שִׁכֵּן בָּאָדָם׃<br/> <b>סא</b> וַיִּתֵּן לַשְּׁבִי עֻזּוֹ; וְתִפְאַרְתּוֹ בְיַד צָר׃<br/> ...<b>סז</b> וַיִּמְאַס בְּאֹהֶל יוֹסֵף; וּבְשֵׁבֶט אֶפְרַיִם לֹא בָחָר׃<br/> <b>סח</b> וַיִּבְחַר אֶת שֵׁבֶט יְהוּדָה; אֶת הַר צִיּוֹן אֲשֶׁר אָהֵב׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים פרק עח</footer></blockquote> It sounds very positive for David, but there is a veiled warning: if you do not stray from ה׳'s word, Jerusalem will be destroyed as well. And this is echoed by ירמיהו‎ 400 years later, with an explicit warning: <blockquote lang=he><p> <b>ג</b> כֹּה אָמַר ה׳ צְבָא־וֹת אֱלֹקֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל הֵיטִיבוּ דַרְכֵיכֶם וּמַעַלְלֵיכֶם; וַאֲשַׁכְּנָה אֶתְכֶם בַּמָּקוֹם הַזֶּה׃ <b>ד</b> אַל תִּבְטְחוּ לָכֶם אֶל דִּבְרֵי הַשֶּׁקֶר לֵאמֹר; הֵיכַל ה׳ הֵיכַל ה׳ הֵיכַל ה׳ הֵמָּה׃ <b>ה</b> כִּי אִם הֵיטֵיב תֵּיטִיבוּ אֶת דַּרְכֵיכֶם וְאֶת מַעַלְלֵיכֶם; אִם עָשׂוֹ תַעֲשׂוּ מִשְׁפָּט בֵּין אִישׁ וּבֵין רֵעֵהוּ׃ <b>ו</b> גֵּר יָתוֹם וְאַלְמָנָה לֹא תַעֲשֹׁקוּ וְדָם נָקִי אַל תִּשְׁפְּכוּ בַּמָּקוֹם הַזֶּה; וְאַחֲרֵי אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים לֹא תֵלְכוּ לְרַע לָכֶם׃ <b>ז</b> וְשִׁכַּנְתִּי אֶתְכֶם בַּמָּקוֹם הַזֶּה בָּאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר נָתַתִּי לַאֲבוֹתֵיכֶם; לְמִן עוֹלָם וְעַד עוֹלָם׃ ...<b>יב</b> כִּי לְכוּ נָא אֶל מְקוֹמִי אֲשֶׁר בְּשִׁילוֹ אֲשֶׁר שִׁכַּנְתִּי שְׁמִי שָׁם בָּרִאשׁוֹנָה; וּרְאוּ אֵת אֲשֶׁר עָשִׂיתִי לוֹ מִפְּנֵי רָעַת עַמִּי יִשְׂרָאֵל׃</p> <footer class=source>ירמיהו פרק ז</footer></blockquote> So וְהוּא רַחוּם isn't all that comforting. ה׳ promises לֹא יָעִיר *כָּל* חֲמָתוֹ, but a lot of death and destruction can come before *all* of ה׳'s anger is awakened. <hr/> This is a harrowing lesson for those of us who consider ourselves Religious Zionists, who say בָּרֵךְ אֶת מְדִינַת יִשְׂרָאֵל, רֵאשִׁית צְמִיחַת גְּאֻלָּתֵנוּ. <blockquote lang=en><p>There is a famous story about Rav Yitzchak Herzog, the Chief Rabbi of Israel at the time of the Second World War, who refused to listen to even the most influential of personalities, who feared and pleaded with him not to return to "Palestine". Despite the fact that German Field-Marshall Erwin Rommel, had already succeeded in conquering most of North Africa, Rav Herzog countered assuredly that his troops will be stopped before reaching the Holy Land. He explained with confidence that we have a Jewish tradition that there will never be another destruction of the Jewish settlement in Israel. We are now witness to the final redemption, and there simply cannot be another exile. </p> <footer class=source><a href="https://www.yeshiva.co/midrash/10933">Rabbi Ari Shvat, <cite>Could Zionism Be Just Another False Messiah?</cite></a></footer></blockquote> There are a number of sources for Rav Herzog's certainty that there will be no more חורבן. One is from הושע: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> לְכוּ וְנָשׁוּבָה אֶל ה׳ כִּי הוּא טָרָף וְיִרְפָּאֵנוּ; יַךְ וְיַחְבְּשֵׁנוּ׃ <b>ב</b> יְחַיֵּנוּ מִיֹּמָיִם; בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁי יְקִמֵנוּ וְנִחְיֶה לְפָנָיו׃</p> <footer class=source>הושע פרק ו</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>זה המאמר הוא על העתיד ומיומים משל לשני גליות גלות מצרים וגלות בבל ביום השלישי משל לגלות הזה השלישי שיקימנו ממנו ונחיה לפניו שלא נגלה עוד לעולם ונחיה תמיד לפניו כל ימי <em>עד שלא נחטא עוד</em>.</p> <footer class=source>רד״ק, הושע ו:ב</footer></blockquote> But it's not clear whether וְנִחְיֶה לְפָנָיו is a promise or a condition. We cannot take Israel for granted.
