This week's parsha ends with פרשת המועדים: {:he} ><b>א</b> וידבר ה׳ אל משה לאמר׃ <b>ב</b> דבר אל בני ישראל ואמרת אלהם מועדי ה׳ אשר תקראו אתם מקראי קדש אלה הם מועדי׃ <b>ג</b> ששת ימים תעשה מלאכה וביום השביעי שבת שבתון מקרא קדש כל מלאכה לא תעשו; שבת הוא לה׳ בכל מושבתיכם׃ > <b>ד</b> אלה מועדי ה׳ מקראי קדש אשר תקראו אתם במועדם׃ --ויקרא פרק כג That second pasuk, ששת ימים תעשה מלאכה, is a quote from the original commandment about שבת and the משכן: {:he} >ששת ימים יעשה מלאכה וביום השביעי שבת שבתון קדש לה׳; כל העשה מלאכה ביום השבת מות יומת׃ --שמות לא:טו And when Moshe relays that commandment: {:he} >ששת ימים תעשה מלאכה וביום השביעי יהיה לכם קדש שבת שבתון לה׳; כל העשה בו מלאכה יומת׃ --שמות לה:ב But the question is, what is it doing here? We are talking about יום טוב, not שבת. The commentators offer various explanations. {:he} ><em>ששת ימים</em>: מה ענין שבת אצל מועדות? ללמדך שכל המחלל את המועדות מעלין עליו כאלו חלל את השבתות. וכל המקיים את המועדות, מעלין עליו כאלו קיים את השבתות. --רש״י, ויקרא כג:ג But there is one answer cited in the name of the Vilna Gaon that I want to focus on. I cannot find the original unfortunately, but it is cited. There are two points about our pasuk: first, the expression שבת שבתון is also used for יום כיפור: {:he} ><b>כט</b> והיתה לכם לחקת עולם; בחדש השביעי בעשור לחדש תענו את נפשתיכם וכל מלאכה לא תעשו האזרח והגר הגר בתוככם׃ <b>ל</b> כי ביום הזה יכפר עליכם לטהר אתכם; מכל חטאתיכם לפני ה׳ תטהרו׃ <b>לא</b> שבת שבתון היא לכם ועניתם את נפשתיכם חקת עולם׃ --ויקרא פרק טז And second, our pasuk calls this שבת שבתון a מקרא קדש: it is *declared holy*. The weekly שבת isn't declared holy; it is inherently holy from שבעת ימי בראשית. Hence in שמות לא:טו it is שבת שבתון קדש לה׳. It is the מועדים that are מקראי קדש. That includes יום כיפור: {:he} ><b>כז</b> אך בעשור לחדש השביעי הזה יום הכפרים הוא מקרא קדש יהיה לכם ועניתם את נפשתיכם; והקרבתם אשה לה׳׃...<b>לב</b> שבת שבתון הוא לכם ועניתם את נפשתיכם; בתשעה לחדש בערב מערב עד ערב תשבתו שבתכם׃ --ויקרא פרק כג >The Vilna Gaon suggests a brilliant, novel way of dealing with this problem. He proposes that the "Shabbat" mentioned in vv. 2-3 does not refer to Saturday...Rather, it refers to the Holy Day of Yom Kippur. Like Shabbat, Yom Kippur is also referred to in the Torah as "Shabbat Shabbaton" (translated here as "a total Shabbat")... > But if the "Shabbat" of the verse is Yom Kippur, then what are the six other days mentioned here? The Gaon explains that these are the other six Yomim Tovim...Rosh Hashanah, the 1st and 8th days of Succot, the 1st and 7th days of Pesach, and Shavuot. The meaning of the verse is thus, according to the Gaon's interpretation: “On the [other] six days [mentioned in this section], [certain types of] work may be done (i.e. the cooking and preparation of food, which is permissible on festival days), but on the seventh day [of the holidays under discussion], there is a total Shabbat, a holy day; *no* work (i.e. not even cooking, etc.) may be done...” --Rabbi Mordecai Kornfeld, [_Weekly Parasha-Page Parshat Emor 575_]5(http://www.dafyomi.co.il/parsha/emor2.htm) The pasuk ends with שבת הוא לה׳ בכל מושבתיכם; in this formulation, that means that *each* of those seven days are a שבת, a day of ceasing; one of them is a שבת שבתון, a day of more extreme ceasing. And, in fact, the other יומים טובים are called שבת or שבתון. {:he} ><b>יא</b> והניף את העמר לפני ה׳ לרצנכם; ממחרת *השבת* יניפנו הכהן׃ ... > <b>כד</b> דבר אל בני ישראל לאמר; בחדש השביעי באחד לחדש יהיה לכם *שבתון* זכרון תרועה מקרא קדש׃... > <b>לט</b> אך בחמשה עשר יום לחדש השביעי באספכם את תבואת הארץ תחגו את חג ה׳ שבעת ימים; ביום הראשון *שבתון* וביום השמיני *שבתון*׃ --ויקרא פרק כג The Torah borrows the language of שבת and applies it to the מועדים. But they are very different. The Rambam has the law of not working on שבת as both a לא תעשה and an עשה: {:he} >שלא לעשות מלאכה בשבת, שנאמר (שמות כ:י) לֹא תַעֲשֶׂה כׇל מְלָאכָה. --משנה תורה, הקדמה, מצוות לא תעשה שכ {:he} >לשבות בשבת, שנאמר (שמות כג:יב) וּבַיּוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִי תִּשְׁבֹּת. --משנה תורה, הקדמה, מצוות עשה קנד And he has the same לא תעשה and עשה for יום טוב: {:he} >שלא לעשות מלאכה בראשון של פסח, שנאמר (שמות יב:טז) כׇּל מְלָאכָה לֹא יֵעָשֶׂה בָהֶם. --משנה תורה, הקדמה, מצוות לא תעשה שכג {:he} >לשבות בראשון של פסח, שנאמר (שמות יב:טז) וּבַיּוֹם הָרִאשׁוֹן מִקְרָא קֹדֶשׁ. --משנה תורה, הקדמה, מצוות עשה קנט (and similarly all the other יומים טובים) There is an explicit commandment of תִּשְׁבֹּת on שבת. On יום טוב, the commandment is מקראי קדש אשר תקראו אתם במועדם. We declare that these days are holy, set aside, to be a מועד, an encounter with הקב״ה. We do that by not doing other things that distract from the מועד. That is the meaning of the שבתון of יום טוב. On שבת, the לא תעשה drives the עשה: we imitate ה׳ by not creating, and therefore we rest from our work. On יום טוב, the עשה drives the לא תעשה: we are occupied with the מקרא קדש and rest from other things, and therefore we do not do work. >The essence of Shabbat is to serve as a reminder about the Creation. The prohibition of labor comes to remind us that following the six days of Creation, God rested on the seventh day...In contrast, the idea underlying the prohibition of labor on Yom Tov is less clear. Each of the festivals has its own unique significance; it is therefore difficult to assume that the prohibition of labor (which applies equally to all of the festivals) is connected to this unique meaning. Why, then, is labor forbidden on Yom Tov? > ...[T]he days of Yom Tov are not a remembrance of Creation, and the prohibitions of labor fashion the day as a "holy day." --Rabbi Michael Rosensweig, [_Resting on Shabbat and Yom Tov_](https://www.etzion.org.il/en/resting-shabbat-and-yom-tov) Rav Rosensweig has an intricate analysis of the משנה תורה, and notes: >The Rambam [begins] /Hilkhot Shabbat/ with the primary obligating factor of Shabbat--the forbidden labors--and so the positive commandment is mentioned only in passing, as an additional mitzva applying to the forbidden labors. On Yom Tov, in contrast, the relationship between the positive and negative commandments is just the opposite: the prohibitions of labor are designed to advance the objective of the positive commandment, and therefore, the Rambam began with the positive commandment. --Rabbi Michael Rosensweig, [_Resting on Shabbat and Yom Tov_](https://www.etzion.org.il/en/resting-shabbat-and-yom-tov) ---- So the Torah opens פרשת המועדים with the statement that ששת ימים תעשה מלאכה: on six of these days, even though they are שבתון, work must be done, the work of creating a מועד. And what is that work? {:he} >וביום הראשון מקרא קדש וביום השביעי מקרא קדש יהיה לכם; *כל מלאכה לא יעשה בהם אך אשר יאכל לכל נפש הוא לבדו יעשה לכם*׃ --שמות יב:טז You are going to eat. A lot. {:he} >דתניא, רבי אליעזר אומר: אין לו לאדם ביום טוב אלא או אוכל ושותה או יושב ושונה. רבי יהושע אומר: חלקהו, חציו לאכילה ושתייה וחציו לבית המדרש. ואמר רבי יוחנן: ושניהם מקרא אחד דרשו, כתוב אחד אומר (דברים טז:ח) עֲצֶרֶת לַה׳ אֱלֹקֶיךָ, וכתוב אחד אומר (במדבר כט:לה) עֲצֶרֶת תִּהְיֶה לָכֶם. רבי אליעזר סבר: או כולו לה׳ או כולו לכם. ורבי יהושע סבר: חלקהו, חציו לה׳ וחציו לכם. --פסחים סח,ב The unique מצווה of יום טוב, that is not shared with שבת, is שמחה. And we achieve that by eating: {:he} >ושמחת לפני ה׳ אלקיך אתה ובנך ובתך ועבדך ואמתך והלוי אשר בשעריך והגר והיתום והאלמנה אשר בקרבך במקום אשר יבחר ה׳ אלקיך לשכן שמו שם׃ --דברים טז:יא {:he} >חייב אדם לשמח בניו ובני ביתו ברגל שנאמר (דברים טז:יד) וְשָׂמַחְתָּ בְּחַגֶּךָ...תניא רבי יהודה בן בתירא אומר: בזמן שבית המקדש קיים אין שמחה אלא בבשר שנאמר (דברים כז:ז) וְזָבַחְתָּ שְׁלָמִים וְאָכַלְתָּ שָּׁם וְשָׂמַחְתָּ לִפְנֵי ה׳ אֱלֹקֶיךָ. --פסחים קט:א How does stuffing our faces create a מקרא קדש? {:he} ><em>והלוי והגר והיתום והאלמנה</em>: ארבעה שלי כנגד ארבעה שלך, בנך ובתך ועבדך ואמתך, אם אתה משמח את שלי, אני משמח את שלך. --רש״י, דברים טז:יא {:he} ><b>יז</b> שבעת ימי הפסח ושמונת ימי החג עם שאר ימים טובים כולם אסורים בספד ותענית, וחייב אדם להיות בהן שמח וטוב לב הוא ובניו ואשתו ובני ביתו וכל הנלווים עליו שנאמר וְשָׂמַחְתָּ בְּחַגֶּךָ... > <b>יח</b> כיצד: הקטנים נותן להם קליות ואגוזים ומגדנות; והנשים קונה להן בגדים ותכשיט כפי ממונו; והאנשים אוכלין בשר ושותין יין שאין שמחה אלא בבשר ואין שמחה אלא ביין. וכשהוא אוכל ושותה חייב להאכיל לגר ליתום ולאלמנה עם שאר העניים האמיללים. אבל מי שנועל דלתות חצרו ואוכל ושותה הוא ובניו ואשתו ואינו מאכיל ומשקה לעניים ולמרי נפש אין זו שמחת מצוה אלא שמחת כרסו. --משנה תורה, הלכות שביתת יום טוב פרק ו Rabbi Shulman likes to point out that the משכן is called the אוהל מועד, the "tent of meeting" or "tent of the encounter", and that there are two aspects of this encounter: we meet with ה׳ and we meet with the community as a whole. The מועדים, as מקראי קודש, also have to encompass both. When we feast with כנסת ישראל we are encountering הקב״ה. And so ששת ימים תעשה מלאכה, on those six days, there is work to be done; the work of אתה משמח את שלי. We are creating the מועד.
