This shiur was inspired by two regular participants. I always appreciate the feedback! I'm going to start by looking at the construction of the מזבח, the bronze altar: {:he} ><b>א</b> ועשית את המזבח עצי שטים; חמש אמות ארך וחמש אמות רחב רבוע יהיה המזבח ושלש אמות קמתו׃ <b>ב</b> ועשית קרנתיו על ארבע פנתיו ממנו תהיין קרנתיו; וצפית אתו נחשת׃ <b> ג</b> ועשית סירתיו לדשנו ויעיו ומזרקתיו ומזלגתיו ומחתתיו; לכל כליו תעשה נחשת׃ <b>ד</b> ועשית לו מכבר מעשה רשת נחשת; ועשית על הרשת ארבע טבעת נחשת על ארבע קצותיו׃ --שמות פרק כז What is a מכבר? It clearly is not part of the body of the מזבח, because it is described after the utensils. The translations are not much help: >You shall make for it a netting of copper meshwork and make upon the meshwork four copper rings at its four edges. --Exodus 27:4, Artscroll Chumash translation >And thou shalt make for it a grate of network of brass; and upon the net shalt thou make four brazen rings on its four corners. --Exodus 27:4, Koren Tanach translation The "netting" translation comes from Onkelos, who uses the same word to translate מכבר as he does the קלעים, the lace curtains: {:he} >וְתַעְבֵּד לֵיהּ *סְרָדָא* עוֹבַד מְצַדְתָּא דִנְחָשָׁא וְתַעְבֵּד עַל מְצַדְתָּא אַרְבַּע עִזְקָן דִּנְחָשָׁא עַל אַרְבַּע סִטְרוֹהִי׃ --תרגום אונקלוס, שמות כז:ד {:he} >ועשית את חצר המשכן לפאת נגב תימנה *קלעים* לחצר שש משזר מאה באמה ארך לפאה האחת׃ --שמות כז:ט {:he} >וְתַעְבֵּד יָת דָּרַת מַשְׁכְּנָא לְרוּחַ עֵבַר דָּרוֹמָא *סְרָדִין* לְדָרְתָּא דְּבוּץ שְׁזִיר מְאָה בְאַמִּין אֻרְכָּא לְעֵבַר חָד׃ --תרגום אונקלוס, שמות כז:ט And a כברה is a sieve: {:he} >כִּי הִנֵּה אָנֹכִי מְצַוֶּה וַהֲנִעוֹתִי בְכָל הַגּוֹיִם אֶת בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל; כַּאֲשֶׁר יִנּוֹעַ בַּכְּבָרָה וְלֹא יִפּוֹל צְרוֹר אָרֶץ. --עמוס ט:ט So Targum Pseudo-Jonathan says that the מכבר was an OSHA requirement, a metal screen to keep the coals from falling down: {:he} >וְתִיתֵּן יָתָהּ תְּחוֹת סוֹבְבֵי מַדְבְּחָא מִלְרַע וּתְהֵי מְצַרְתָּא עַד פַּלְגוּת מַדְבְּחָא וְאִין נָפִיל גּוֹמָא אוֹ גוּמְרָא דְאֵשָׁא מֵעִילַוֵי מַדְבְּחָא נָפִיל עִילַוֵי קַנְקַל וְלָא יִתְמְטֵי לְאַרְעָא וְנַסְבִין יָתֵיהּ כַהֲנַיָא מֵעִילַוֵי קַנְקַל וּמְהַדְרִין יָתֵיהּ עַל מַדְבְּחָא׃ --תרגום יונתן, שמות כז:ה >And thou shalt place it under the surroundings of the altar, beneath, that the network may be to the middle of the altar, that, if any fragment or fiery coal fall from the altar, it may fall upon the grate, and not touch the ground, and that the priests may take it from the grate, and replace it upon the altar. --Targum of Jonathan ben Uzziel, trans. J. W. Etheridge, London, 1862, Exodus XXVII:5, from [Sefaria](https://www.sefaria.org/Targum_Jonathan_on_Exodus.27.5?lang=bi&with=Translations&lang2=en) But no one seems to go with that, and it doesn't explain the rings on the edges. David Hirschhorn tells the story of the epiphany he had at a company picnic. They brought in a caterer who had a huge grill: a metal box filled with coals, with a grate on top for grilling, and the cook would sprinkle water and sauce on the meat to keep it from burning. David realized that this was exactly what the Torah is describing here: The כהנים ate the meat of the קרבנות. The metal מזבח is filled with coals, and the מכבר is the grill that goes on top of the fire, with rings to hook on the "horns". The מזלגות are barbecue tongs, and the מזרקות are pans for barbecue sauce. Now, that's not how we usually think about it. We assume the parts of the קרבן that go on the מזבח are the parts that are burned completely; the animals are sacrificed, and the parts that are meant to be eaten are given to the כהנים or the owners (depending on the type of קרבן), and they cook it wherever they want, in the עזרה or in Jerusalem, depending on the type of קרבן. But I can't find proof that the כהנים *didn't* grill their meat directly on the מזבח. We have very few descriptions of how the קרבן was cooked. {:he} >וּבְכֻלָּם, הַכֹּהֲנִים רַשָּׁאִין לְשַׁנּוֹת בַּאֲכִילָתָן, לְאָכְלָן צְלוּיִים, שְׁלוּקִים, וּמְבֻשָּׁלִים, וְלָתֵת לְתוֹכָן תִּבְלֵי חֻלִּין וְתִבְלֵי תְרוּמָה. --משנה זבחים י:ז {:he} >אמר רב חסדא: מתנות כהונה אין נאכלות אלא צלי ואין נאכלות אלא בחרדל. מאי טעמא? אמר קרא (במדבר יח:ח) [לְכָל קָדְשֵׁי בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לְךָ נְתַתִּים] לְמָשְׁחָה, לגדולה; כדרך שהמלכים אוכלים. --חולין קלב,ב {:he} ><em>אין נאכלין אלא צלי ואלא בחרדל</em>: וא"ת דבפרק כל התדיר אומרים ”ובכולן רשאין הכהנים לשנות באכילה לאוכלן צלויין שלוקין מבושלין“ ואמר בגמרא טעמא משום דכתיב בהו ”למשחה“, פירוש לגדולה כדרך שהמלכים אוכלין. ונראה דודאי כמו שטוב לו ונהנה יותר מצי אכיל להו אבל אדם שטוב לו צלי כשלוק ומבושל יאכל צלי שהוא דרך גדולה יותר. --תוספות, חולין קלב,ב The only statement about *where* to roast is a negative one: {:he} >וְאֵלּוּ אִם עָלוּ יֵרְדוּ: בְּשַׂר קָדְשֵׁי קָדָשִׁים, וּבְשַׂר קָדָשִׁים קַלִּים. --משנה זבחים ט:ה {:he} ><em>ואלו אם עלו ירדו</em>: ואפילו הן כשרים וטהורים, משום דלא שייך בהו מזבח כלל. > <em>בשר קדשי קדשים כו׳</em>: דלאכילה קיימי ולא למזבח. --ברטנורא, משנה זבחים ט:ה That implies that לכתחילה you can't use the מזבח as a barbecue pit, but בדיעבד it would be. But I still think David is wrong about the מכבר itself, because the rings that are attached to it are used for the poles, so it must go on the *outside* of the מזבח. {:he} ><b>ד</b> ועשית לו מכבר מעשה רשת נחשת; ועשית על הרשת ארבע טבעת נחשת על ארבע קצותיו׃ <b>ה</b> ונתתה אתה תחת כרכב המזבח מלמטה; והיתה הרשת עד חצי המזבח׃ <b>ו</b> ועשית בדים למזבח בדי עצי שטים; וצפית אתם נחשת׃ <b>ז</b> והובא את בדיו בטבעת; והיו הבדים על שתי צלעת המזבח בשאת אתו׃ --שמות פרק כז {:he} ><b>ד</b> ויעש למזבח מכבר מעשה רשת נחשת תחת כרכבו מלמטה עד חציו׃ <b>ה</b> ויצק ארבע טבעת בארבע הקצות למכבר הנחשת; בתים לבדים׃ <b>ו</b> ויעש את הבדים עצי שטים; ויצף אתם נחשת׃ <b>ז</b> ויבא את הבדים בטבעת על צלעת המזבח לשאת אתו בהם; נבוב לחת עשה אתו׃ --שמות פרק לח So it's usually assumed that the מכבר was simply decorative:  --Splash screen for Artscroll's [Mishkan program](https://www.artscroll.com/Books/9781422608807.html) But I don't think David is completely wrong. The מכבר is decorative, but it's a decorative *barbecue grill*. It has to be symbolic of *something*, and the idea of hanging symbols on the outside of the מזבח occurs elsewhere: {:he} ><b>א</b> וידבר ה׳ אל משה לאמר׃ <b>ב</b> אמר אל אלעזר בן אהרן הכהן וירם את המחתת מבין השרפה ואת האש זרה הלאה; כי קדשו׃ <b>ג</b> את מחתות החטאים האלה בנפשתם ועשו אתם רקעי פחים צפוי למזבח כי הקריבם לפני ה׳ ויקדשו; ויהיו לאות לבני ישראל׃ <b>ד</b> ויקח אלעזר הכהן את מחתות הנחשת אשר הקריבו השרפים; וירקעום צפוי למזבח׃ <b>ה</b> זכרון לבני ישראל למען אשר לא יקרב איש זר אשר לא מזרע אהרן הוא להקטיר קטרת לפני ה׳; ולא יהיה כקרח וכעדתו כאשר דבר ה׳ ביד משה לו׃ --במדבר פרק יז The מכבר is also an אות, reminding us what it means when we eat a קרבן: {:he} >והנה האיש המתקדש בקדושת בוראו אפילו מעשיו הגשמיים חוזרים להיות ענייני קדושה ממש, וסימניך אכילת קדשים שהיא עצמה מצות עשה, ואמרו ז״ל (פסחים נט,ב): כהנים אוכלים ובעלים מתכפרים. --מסילת ישרים כ:ו There's a grill hanging on the outside of the מזבח as a sign that we are eating literally משולחן גבוה. {:he} >לאחר השחיטה כל הקדשים הקלים נעשים ממון של בית המקדש, ממון גבוה, וגם מה שהבעלים אוכלים, אינו ממון שלהם, אלא הוא של בית המקדש והם אוכלים על שולחנו כמו אורחים. זהו מה שנקרא בלשון הגמרא "משולחן גבוה קא זכו". > ...וכבר התבאר לך דעת חכמי האמת בענין הקרבנות, שמטרתם לקשר הרוחני בגשמי, וענין ההקרבה היא העלאה לגבוה כביכול, והוא מצדו נותנה לכהנים פרס חלף עבודתם לפניו יתברך שמו, ועל זה אמרו חז"ל: כהנים משלחן גבוה קא זכו. --הרב רפאל וסרטיל, [_שולחן גבוה_](https://www.yeshiva.org.il/ask/109264) ---- That's some of the symbolism of the מזבח. I also want to look at the symbolism of the ארון. My sister is on the board of [Pardes](https://www.pardes.org.il/), which I hadn't realized still existed (Suzanne had learned there in her gap year, some number of years ago). I like to think of myself as aware of Torah resources, and since I hadn't heard about them in decades, I would do my bit to help publicize them. This is from Rav Alex Israel's [_Terumah: Hypocrisy and Authenticity_](https://elmad.pardes.org/2020/02/the-parsha-discussion-with-alex-israel-terumah-hypocrisy-and-authenticity/) {:he} ><b>י</b> ועשו ארון עצי שטים; אמתים וחצי ארכו ואמה וחצי רחבו ואמה וחצי קמתו׃ <b>יא</b> וצפית אתו זהב טהור מבית ומחוץ תצפנו; ועשית עליו זר זהב סביב׃ --שמות פרק כה {:he} ><em>מבית ומחוץ תצפנו</em>: אמר רבא: כל תלמיד חכם שאין תוכו כברו—אינו תלמיד חכם. --יומא עב,ב The question comes up: is תוכו כברו a good thing? What if your תוך isn't so good? >I shall tell you of an incident that happened when I was a Rabbi…One Shabbat morning I passed a congregant who was smoking. When he saw me coming, he tried to hide his cigarette behind his back and turned his face away. A few minutes later another congregant saw me. He too was smoking, but he was determined to brazen it out. He made no attempt to hide the fact that he was smoking on Shabbat; on the contrary he passed me, puffing quite openly. He was determined to be "honest"; in all probability he was congratulating himself upon his courage--he was not going to be a hypocrite--no, not he! Well, what do you think? --Rabbi Kopul Rosen, _Dear David_, cited in Alex Israel, [_Terumah: Hypocrisy and Authenticity_](https://elmad.pardes.org/2020/02/the-parsha-discussion-with-alex-israel-terumah-hypocrisy-and-authenticity/) Rashi points out the ambiguity, that תוכו כברו is both גנות and שבח: {:he} ><em>ולא יכלו דברו לשלום</em>: מתוך גנותם למדנו שבחם, שלא דברו אחת בפה ואחת בלב. --רש"י, בראשית לז:ד And the gemara describes the day that Rabban Gamliel was deposed as head of the Sanhedrin: {:he} >תנא אותו היום, סלקוהו לשומר הפתח ונתנה להם רשות לתלמידים ליכנס. שהיה רבן גמליאל מכריז ואומר: כל תלמיד שאין תוכו כברו, לא יכנס לבית המדרש. > ההוא יומא אתוספו כמה ספסלי...הוה קא חלשה דעתיה דרבן גמליאל, אמר: דלמא חס ושלום מנעתי תורה מישראל. אחזו ליה בחלמיה חצבי חיורי דמליין קטמא [רש״י: כלומר אף אלו אינם ראויים]. ולא היא, ההיא ליתובי דעתיה, הוא דאחזו ליה. --ברכות כח,א אין תוכו כברו may mean that we acknowledge that there is a right way to act, even if we don't feel it inside. >Hypocrisy is a tribute that vice pays to virtue. --[Francois Duc De La Rochefoucauld](https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/319152-hypocrisy-is-a-tribute-that-vice-pays-to-virtue) And in fact, if we look at the כלי המשכן for symbolism, the מזבח is the opposite of the ארון: it is full of dirt! {:he} > מזבח אדמה תעשה לי וזבחת עליו את עלתיך ואת שלמיך את צאנך ואת בקרך; בכל המקום אשר אזכיר את שמי אבוא אליך וברכתיך׃ --שמות כ:כא {:he} ><em>מזבח אדמה</em>: מחבר באדמה...ד"א שהיה ממלא את חלל מזבח הנחשת אדמה בשעת חניתן. --רש״י, שם Rabbi Israel doesn't present a synthesis for this dialectic, just presents questions for discussion. But we know we are supposed to do מצוות for the wrong reasons, שלא לשמה: {:he} >לעולם יעסוק אדם בתורה ובמצוות אפילו שלא לשמה, שמתוך שלא לשמה בא לשמה. --סנהדרין קה,ב {:he} >לפיכך כשמלמדין את הקטנים...אין מלמדין אותן אלא לעבוד מיראה וכדי לקבל שכר עד שתרבה דעתן ויתחכמו חכמה יתירה מגלים להם רז זה מעט מעט ומרגילין אותן לענין זה בנחת עד שישיגוהו וידעוהו ויעבדוהו מאהבה. --משנה תורה, הלכות תשובה י:ה But שלא לשמה בא לשמה has to be part of the process. The problem with hypocrisy is being satisfied with אין תוכו כברו. {:he} >מסופר שתלמיד אחד מתלמידי האדמו"ר מקוצק שהיה ידוע בלמדנותו, אולם דעותיו והשקפותיו לא תמיד תאמו את רוח התורה... > ניגש פעם אל הרבי מקוצק והתפאר לפניו כי אין הוא הולך 4 אמות ללא תלמוד תורה... > שאל אותו הרבי: "וכמה אמות אתה הולך ללא יראת שמים?!"... --[_תרומה--תוכו כברו_](http://dvar-tora.co.il/mamr.aspx?id=243) The assumption of the Torah is that our true תוך is always good; that we have the potential to improve: {:he} >פנימיות הלב הישראלי נוטה למצוה...ע"כ אם לב האדם מוחזק לבלתי ישר, אז כיון שתוכו אינו טוב מה בצע במה שחיצוניותו טובה. אבל לפי מה דקיימא לך שהאדם הוא ישר בטבעו וחטאיו הם מקרים חיצונים בו, כיון שברו טוב הוא מסכים ודאי לתוכו האמיתי. ואע"פ שנמצאים הרהורים ודברים בלתי טובים, על כרחו יתבטלו ע"י הביטול הפנימי של התנגדות הטבע האמיתי של הנפש וההתנגדות החיצוני של המעשים החיצונים שהם עכ"פ טובים, ואפילו מתוך שלא לשמה יבא לשמה. ויתאימו ההנהגה החיצונה עם הפנימית האמיתית, ונמצא שהתוך האמיתי הוא לעולם שוה לברו כשהוא טוב. --עין איה, ברכות ד:טו >There is no hypocrisy in being ashamed of our weaknesses and there is nothing dishonest in wishing to hide our faults from public view. Of course, the all-important thing is to strive continually to improve and eliminate our defects, but honesty does not demand of us that until our faults are removed we display them. On the contrary as long as a man tries to conceal his weaknesses it is clear that he is ashamed of them; once he begins to flaunt them he is reconciled to them. Where there is no sense of shame there is no sensitivity, no awareness and little chance of self-improvement. --Rabbi Kopul Rosen, cited in Alex Israel, [_Terumah: Hypocrisy and Authenticity_](https://elmad.pardes.org/2020/02/the-parsha-discussion-with-alex-israel-terumah-hypocrisy-and-authenticity/) Phyllis Shapiro points out that this may be the real symbolism of the ארון: gold on the outside, gold on the hidden deep inside (Rav Kook's פנימית האמיתית) with cheap wood in the core between them. The combined symbolism of the כלי המשכן tells us that as long as we are striving to improve, we can. כל תלמיד חכם שאין תוכו כברו, אינו תלמיד חכם. Yet.
