Phyllis Shapiro just got me Rabbi David Fohrman's [_Exodus: A Parsha Companion_](https://shop.alephbeta.org/products/exodus-a-parsha-companion), so I'm going to base my shiur on his essay for this week's parsha. I'm not going to say exactly what he says; you should buy the book and read it for yourself! He starts by looking at the description of בת פרעה rescuing Moshe: {:he} >ותרד בת פרעה לרחץ על היאר ונערתיה הלכת על יד היאר; ותרא את התבה בתוך הסוף ותשלח את אמתה ותקחה׃ --שמות ב:ה And the well-known gemara: {:he} ><em>וַתִּשְׁלַח אֶת אֲמָתָהּ וַתִּקָּחֶהָ</em>: רַבִּי יְהוּדָה וְרַבִּי נְחֶמְיָה; חַד אָמַר יָדָהּ, וְחַד אָמַר שִׁפְחָתָהּ...וּלְמַאן דְּאָמַר יָדָהּ, לִיכְתּוֹב יָדָהּ! הָא קָא מַשְׁמַע לַן דְּאִישְׁתַּרְבַּב אִישְׁתַּרְבּוֹבֵי [שטיינזלץ : ידה והתארכה אמות הרבה.] --סוטה יב,ב >Some folks look at it and find themselves suppressing the urge to roll their eyes and think: "This seems like the strangest interpretation in the world. Why can't the Rabbis just leave a perfectly fine story the way it is?" Behind that skepticism is an important question: Could the Rabbis themselves have possibly truly believed in their interpretation? Imagine, in our case, that events *really* transpired the way the Sages of the Midrash say they transpired...I don't know about you, but if I were that princess, I would drop everything and run all the way back to the palace, probably screaming the whole time: "My arm! My arm! What's happened to my arm?" --Rabbi David Fohrman, [_Exodus: A Parsha Companion_](https://shop.alephbeta.org/products/exodus-a-parsha-companion), pp 14-15 He uses that to introduce his approach to מדרש אגדה. There's an important distinction to be made. The Torah includes both legal and historical material, what Robert Cover called ["Nomos and Narrative"](https://digitalcommons.law.yale.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=3690&context=fss_papers) and what Rav Copperman calls הלכות and הליכות. We can read both through the lens of "Bible as literature", what is called פשט; and through the eyes of the תורה שבעל פה, what is called דרש or מדרש. So we have both מדרש הלכה and מדרש אגדה (the narrative דרש). The latter is often abbreviated simply as midrash, but I will try to be more precise and call it aggadah. And those are the stories that seem so outlandish that we can't imagine what חז״ל were thinking. But מדרש אגדה has the same purpose as מדרש הלכה. It is telling us what the תורה שבעל פה has to teach us about the תורה שבכתב, not the story but the lesson. As Rabbi Shulman puts it, we have to take aggadah "seriously but not literally". ---- The one who really defined how we (traditional Jews in a modern world) approach aggadah was the Maharal (much of this comes from Chaim Eisen, [_Maharal’s Be’er ha-Golah and His Revolution in Aggadic Scholarship—in Their Context and on His Terms_](https://hakirah.org/Vol%204%20Eisen.pdf)). Everyone who looks as "מחשבת ישראל"--Rav Kook, Rav Hutner, Rav Shapira, among others--start from the Maharal. But really, it should have come from the Rambam, 400 years before. Rambam, in his introduction to the 13 עקרים, talks about three groups of people who read aggadah. The first takes everything literally and believes it; they are עניי הדעת; יש להצטער עליהם לסכלותם. The second group takes everything literally and considers חז״ל fools; they are כת ארורה...ואלו הפתאים. {:he} >והכת השלישית והם, חי השם, מעטים עד מאד...וידעו כי הם ע"ה אינם מדברים התולים ונתאמת להם שדבריהם יש לו נגלה ונסתר וכי הם בכל מה שאומרים מן הדברים הנמנעים דברו בהם בדרך חידה ומשל כי הוא זה דרך החכמים הגדולים...ואם אתה מן הכת השלישית כשתראה דבר מדבריהם שהדעת מרחיק אותו תעמוד ותתבונן בו ודע שהוא חידה ומשל ותשכב עשוק הלב וטירוד הרעיון בחבורו ובסברתו ותחשוב למצא כוונת השכל ואמונת היושר כמו שנאמר (קהלת יב:י) לִמְצֹא דִּבְרֵי חֵפֶץ וְכָתוּב יֹשֶׁר דִּבְרֵי אֱמֶת, ואז תסתכל בספרי זה ויועיל לך בע"ה. > ...וענינו ולא יספיק בענין זה לבדו ואפילו יהיה מקוצר בתכלית הקצור מאה דפים ולפיכך אניח אותו למקומו...בספר שאחבר אותו בפירושי אלו היסודות. --רמבם, פירוש המשניות, הקדמה לפרק חלק But that book never appeared. >We had promised in the Commentary on the Mishnah that we would explain strange subjects...in the “Book of Correspondence” [ספר ההשואה]— the latter being a book in which we promised to explain all the difficult passages in the Midrashim where the external sense manifestly contradicts the truth and departs from the intelligible. They are all parables. However, when, many years ago, we began these books and composed a part of them, our beginning to explain matters in this way did not commend itself to us. For we saw that if we should adhere to parables and to concealment of what ought to be concealed, we would...as it were, have replaced one individual by another of the same species. If, on the other hand, we explained what ought to be explained, it would be unsuitable for the vulgar among the people…In view of these considerations, we have given up composing these two books in the way in which they were begun. --Rambam, /Moreh ha-Nevukhim/, _Introduction to the First Part_, Pines translation, as cited in Chaim Eisen, [_Maharal’s Be’er ha-Golah and His Revolution in Aggadic Scholarship—in Their Context and on His Terms_](https://hakirah.org/Vol%204%20Eisen.pdf), p 139 His son wrote an essay on aggadah that outlines his approach: {:he} >ואבי מורי ז"ל חשב לחבר ספר בפירושם, כאשר זכר בתחילת פירוש המשנה, ולבסוף נטה מעליו, ויירא משה מגשת אליו, כאשר אמר בתחילת המורה. > {:en} [But he explains why he feels it's necessary to do some explaining, and that there are 5 types of /midrashim/. The first two concern us.] > החלק הראשון מחלקי הדרשות החמשה, הם דרשות על פי פשוטן, לא נתכוון בהם דבר אחר זולת הפשט והנראה בעיני ההוגים. > החלק השני הדרשות שיש חיצון ופנימי. והכוונה היות העניין הפנימי ולא העניין החיצון הפשטי. ושמו לו עניין חיצון הפך עניני הפנימי לתועלת גדולה, כבר התבאר רובם אבל לא כולם במורה הנבוכים ובפירוש המשנה. --רבי אברהם בן הרמב"ם, [_מאמר על דרשות חז"ל_](https://daat.ac.il/daat/mahshevt/agadot/hagada1-2.htm) And this is the usual way we talk about understanding aggadah. Some fit in with the פשט, and are on a par with the modern "literary" reading of תנ״ך. Call that פשט אגדה. Some have a deeper meaning, העניין הפנימי, and are meant allegorically: מדרש אגדה. Unlike laws, moral concepts can't be put into unambiguous words. Stories that portray attitudes and feelings are the only way to express them. However, the Maharal is much more radical. He claims that חז״ל are *never* interested in the literary side; while you might ask "what's bothering Rashi", it makes no sense to ask "what's bothering the gemara". {:he} >ואני לא באתי אלא לפשוטו של מקרא ולאגדה המיישבת דברי המקרא דבר דבור על אופניו. --רש״י, בראשית ג:ח ד״ה ישמעו {:he} >ישכילו ויבינו אוהבי שכל מה שלימדונו רבותינו, כי אין מקרא יוצא מידי פשוטו; אף כי *עיקרה של תורה* באה ללמדנו ולהודיענו ברמיזת הפשט וההגדות וההלכות והדינין...והראשונים מתוך חסידותם נתעסקו לנטות אחרי הדרשות שהן עיקר ומתוך כך לא הורגלו בעומק פשוטו של מקרא. --רשב"ם, בראשית לז:ב <blockquote lang=he><p>...לא באו חכמים לדבר מן הסבה הטבעית כי קטון ופחות הסבה הטבעית, כי דבר זה יאות לחכמי הטבע או לרופאים לא לחכמים, אבל הם ז״ל דברו מן הסבה שמחייב הטבע. והמכחיש דבר זה מכחיש האמונה והתורה...אבל הדבר הוא כך...שלכל דבר יש סבה טבעית מחייב אותו, ועל אותה הסבה הטבעית יש סבה אלקית והוא <em>סבת הסבה</em> ומזה דברו חכמים.</p> <footer class=source>באר הגולה, באר ו:ב</footer></blockquote> He gets vitriolic with those who would give *either* a literal *or* a literary reading of aggadah. ---- For an example: {:he} >וישכם אברהם בבקר ויחבש את חמרו ויקח את שני נעריו אתו ואת יצחק בנו; ויבקע עצי עלה ויקם וילך אל המקום אשר אמר לו האלקים׃ --בראשית כב:ג {:he} ><em>את שני נעריו</em>: ישמעאל ואליעזר... --רש"י, שם {:he} ><em>ישמעאל ואליעזר</em>: מדכתיב ”נעריו“ ולא כתיב ”ושני נערים עמו“, וכי לא היו לו רק אלו שני נערים שיאמר "ושני נעריו"?...אלא אלו ב' נערים, ישמעאל ואליעזר, מיוחדים לו. --גור אריה, שם Now that explains Rashi. Nothing unreasonable about identifying Avraham's נערים, and we only have two named characters in his household, so we assume that these are who they were. But that's not why ויקרא רבה (Rashi's source) wants them identified. The superfluous nature of נעריו is just the hook for a profound lesson. {:he} >כי יש באדם ג' חלקים; החלק האחד הוא השכל שבאדם, החלק הב' הוא הנפש, החלק הג' הוא הגוף, אלו ג' חלקים הם כל חלקי האדם. --מהר״ל, דרך חיים, אבות ד:יג גוף here isn't so much the physical body, but the נפש הבהמית, the "animal nature" of the human being. >Human beings are made up of body (soma), mind (psyche) and spirit (noos). Frankl held that while we have a body and a mind, the spirit is who we are, our identity and essence. --Ayesh Perera, [_An Overview of Viktor Frankl's Logotherapy_](https://www.simplypsychology.org/logotherapy.html) [The terms are confusing, because different people use them differently. Maharal's שכל-נפש-גוף correspond, in order, to the kabbalist's נפש-רוח-נשמה, to Frankl's noos-psyche-soma, though I would translate noos as "mind" and psyche as "spirit".] {:he} >כי אצל אברהם...שאין לאברהם צירוף כלל אל המדריגה החמרית, רק רוכב עליו ומתעלה עליו ביותר כאשר ראוי לפי מדריגתו. > וזה שאמר ”ושני נעריו עמו“. ואמר לשני נעריו "שבו עם החמור",(יבמות סב,ב) ”עם הדומה לחמור“ . כי כחות האלו שהם כחות גופניים, הם ”עם הדומה לחמור“. וכאשר היה אברהם הולך לעבוד השם יתברך, להקריב את בנו להתגבר על יצרו שהוא בגוף, ואז הוא מסלק מאתו החומר וכחות הגוף. > ואברהם שהיה רוכב על החמור: כל חלקי הנפש, שהם שלשה כמו שאמרנו, הם שלימים...שאלו ג' חלקי הנפש; האחד עולה למעלה ורוכב על החמור, הוא כח השכלי הנבדל. והשנים האחרים, הם קרובים אל הגוף. וכך היה לאברהם, שהוא היה רוכב על החמור, נבדל מן החומר, "ושני נעריו עמו". --מהר״ל, דרך חיים, אבות ה:יט Yishmael symbolizes the גוף , Eliezer symbolizes the נפש, and Avraham is the שכל that has to leave them all behind to succeed in this test. ---- And in this week's parsha, in the pasuk we quoted above: <blockquote lang=he><p>ותרד בת פרעה לרחץ על היאר ונערתיה הלכת על יד היאר; ותרא את התבה בתוך הסוף ותשלח את אמתה ותקחה׃ </p> <footer class=source>שמות ב:ה</footer></blockquote> Rashi brings a midrashic explanation of ונערתיה הלכת: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>על יד היאר</em>:...וְרַבּוֹתֵינוּ אָמְרוּ, ”הוֹלְכוֹת“ לְשׁוֹן מִיתָה (סוטה יב,ב), כְּמוֹ (בראשית כה:לב) ”הִנֵּה אָנֹכִי הוֹלֵךְ לָמוּת“--הוֹלְכוֹת לָמוּת לְפִי שֶׁמִּחוּ בָהּ; וְהַכָּתוּב מְסַיְּעָן, כִּי לָמָּה לָנוּ לִכְתֹּב ”וְנַעֲרוֹתֶיהָ הוֹלְכוֹת“.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, שם</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>והוקשה להם עוד דלמה הוצרך למכתב ”ונערותיה הולכות על יד היאור“, דמאי נפקא מיניה בזה? לכך אמרו שהיו הולכות למיתה על שמיחו בה שלא תקח את הילד, כי המיתה תקרא הולך לפי ש־(מלכים א ב:ב) הֹלֵךְ בְּדֶרֶךְ כָּל הָאָרֶץ מן העולם. ויש רמז כי הולכת חסר כתיב הלכת בגמטריא מיתה. ויראה שהענין זה מיתה עליונה, כי נסתלק מהם כחם ומזלם לגמרי וזהו מיתה עליונה ושוב לא מיחו...ובפירוש זה יתורץ לך מה שלא כתב בפירוש דבר זה בכתוב, כמו שפירש לך הכתוב הצלת משה רבינו עליו השלום, הוי ליה לפרש שהנערות היו הולכות למיתה, שלא היה זה נס מפורסם.</p> <footer class=source>מהר״ל, גבורות ה׳ יז</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>וכוונת דברי קדשו של המהר״ל היא, כי מכיון דהסתכל באורייתא וברא עלמא, ממילא כל השבעים פנים לתורה יש להם פנים מקבילים בעולמות...וזו הוא הצעת דבריו של המהר״ל, דמכיון דמיתה זו של נערות בת פרעה היא הסתלקות מזלם העליון, וממילא בטל הכוח הרוחני של ההתנגדות למשה, הרי מאורע זה בסדר הצלתו של משה <em>אין הוא שייך לעולם הפשט</em>, וממילא אין מאורע זה ניכר באותם הפנים של תורה שאנו קוראים להם פנים של פשט. זו היא כוונתו של המהר״ל.</p> <footer class=source>פחד יצחק, פסח נב:ג</footer></blockquote> ---- And it is in that spirit that Rabbi Fohrman reads our aggadah: {:he} >ותרד בת פרעה לרחץ על היאר ונערתיה הלכת על יד היאר; ותרא את התבה בתוך הסוף ותשלח את אֲמָתָהּ ותקחה׃ --שמות ב:ה {:he} ><em>את אמתה</em>: את שפחתה. ורבותינו דרשו לשון יד, אבל לפי דקדוק לשון הקדש היה לו להנקד אַמָּתָהּ, דגושה, והם דרשו את אמתה--את ידה, ונשתרבבה אמתה אמות הרבה. --רש׳י, שם >It seems entirely preposterous to imagine that she would succeed at what she dares to do here (and actually succeeds at doing): raise this child as a proud son of Israel, in the palace of Pharaoh...What this princess managed to do with Moses, guided only by her allegiance to that is right, good, and noble--is nothing short of flabbergasting. > And *that*, I think, is the point of the midrash. --Rabbi David Fohrman, [_Exodus: A Parsha Companion_](https://shop.alephbeta.org/products/exodus-a-parsha-companion), p 21 >Ah, but a man's reach should exceed his grasp,<br/> Or what's a heaven for? --Robert Browning, [_Andrea del Sarto_](https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/43745/andrea-del-sarto) >The princess reached for that which was beyond her grasp--and her arm extended; she actually got what she was reaching for. So yes, of course she sent her /amah/, her maidservant. They are looking at destiny, and the power we have to create it.
