This shiur is based on Rabbi Shalom Carmy's [_Perfect Harmony_](https://www.firstthings.com/article/2010/12/perfect-harmony), which itself is a review of sorts of Rabbi Joseph B. The aggadic tradition interprets the Song of Songs symbolically. > However, there is a dual allegorical interpretation, one metaphysical-historical and the other metaphysical-universal. The first interprets the book as a duet sung by the Holy One, Blessed Be He, and the community of Israel that bursts forth from the history of this nation; the second tends to expound it as material for the duet sung by G-d and humankind in general, expressing the mutual longings of Creator and created... > In truth, both interpretations refer to the same basic idea: the relationship between G-d and the world. This connection, however, is expressed in two ways: between G-d and the individual and between G-d and the collective. --Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, [_And From There You Shall Seek_](https://oupress.org/product/and-from-there-you-shall-seek/), pp. 151-152 The historical allegory is most familiar to us, since Artscroll bases its translation on Rashi. {:he} >ואומר אני, שראה שלמה ברוח הקודש שעתידין ישראל לגלות גולה אחר גולה, חורבן אחר חורבן, ולהתאונן בגלות זה על כבודם הראשון, ולזכור חיבה ראשונה אשר היו סגולה לו מכל העמים לאמר (הושע ב:ט) וְאָמְרָה אֵלְכָה וְאָשׁוּבָה אֶל אִישִׁי הָרִאשׁוֹן כִּי טוֹב לִי אָז מֵעָתָּה, ויזכרו את חסדיו ואת מעלם אשר מעלו, ואת הטובות אשר אמר לתת להם באחרית הימים. ויסד הספר הזה ברוח הקודש, בלשון אשה צרורה אלמנות חיות, משתוקקת על בעלה, מתרפקת על דודה, מזכרת אהבת נעוריה אליו, ומודה על פשעה. אף דודה, צר לו בצרתה, ומזכיר חסדי נעוריה ונוי יופיה וכשרון פעליה, בהם נקשר עימה באהבה עזה, להודיעה כי לא מלבו ענה, ולא שילוחיה שילוחין, כי עוד היא אשתו והוא אישה, והוא עתיד לשוב אליה. --רש״י, שיר השירים א:א The second allegory, what Rav Soloveitchick calls "the duet sung by G-d and humankind", "metaphysical-universal", isn't really with humanity as a whole, but the relationship of הקב״ה with every individual. This interpretation is expressed by Rambam. {:he} >וכיצד היא האהבה הראויה? הוא שיאהב את ה' אהבה גדולה יתרה עזה מאד עד שתהא נפשו קשורה באהבת ה', ונמצא שוגה בה תמיד כאלו חולה חלי האהבה שאין דעתו פנויה מאהבת אותה אשה, והוא שוגה בה תמיד בין בשבתו בין בקומו בין בשעה שהוא אוכל ושותה. יתר מזה תהיה אהבת ה' בלב אוהביו שוגים בה תמיד כמו שצונו (דברים ו:ה) בְּכָל לְבָבְךָ וּבְכָל נַפְשְׁךָ. והוא ששלמה אמר דרך משל (שיר השירים ב:ה) כִּי חוֹלַת אַהֲבָה אָנִי. וכל שיר השירים משל הוא לענין זה. --משנה תורה, הלכות תשובה י:ג So do we read שיר השירים as a metaphor of the love between G-d and Israel in history, or the love between the G-d and the human soul? Yes. And Rav Soloveitchick read it both ways. But as I get closer I see that in order to merge with G-d I must abandon my self-existence and let infinity swallow me, and I draw back in terror. > Both love, the consciousness of ontic identification, and fear, the consciousness of ontic separation, are the highest pinnacle of the religious experience. But fear always follows upon love...Full participation in the divine order of existence, full unity, is impossible. The creature can never merge with his Creator. --Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, [_Maimonides: Between Philosophy and Halakhah_](https://www.urimpublications.com/maimonides-between-philosophy-and-halakhah.html), pp. 232-233 ---- We read שיר השירים ritually in two contexts, which reflect the two metaphees of the ספר. We read it on פסח and on ערב שבת. On פסח we read it publicly, as it represents the love between הקב״ה and בני ישראל through history. That began with יציאת מצרים and will continue until the final metaphor: {:he} >ברח דודי ודמה לך לצבי או לעפר האילים על הרי בשמים׃ --שיר השירים ח:יד {:he} ><em>ברח דודי</em>: מן הגולה הזאת ופדנו מביניהם. > <em>ודמה לך לצבי</em>: למהר הגאלה, והשרה שכינתך על הרי בשמים, הוא הר המוריה ובית המקדש שיבנה במהרה בימינו, אמן. --רש״י, שיר השירים ח:יד On the other hand, on Friday nights, many read שיר השירים but always as individuals, quietly to oneself. It reflects our personal relationship with ה׳. >So how, on the Sabbath's eve, is Shir HaShirim read by a Jew who has, for the moment, set aside his worldly preoccupations and even his intellectual pursuits? For the most part, we are taciturn about our private worlds, our personal reflections not recorded for scholarly examination...[O]ur thoughts are unlikely to follow any commentator's exegesis of the biblical verse. Underlying the Jewish ability to respond to G-d is the awareness of our own enigmatic destiny as individuals and as members of His people, at once creative and submissive, questing for Him and yet all too frequently failing to respond to His initiative. > All Scripture rehearses that intimate, holy story of revelation.
