<blockquote lang=he><p>המתרגם פסוק כצורתו הרי זה בדאי; והמוסיף עליו הרי זה מחרף ומגדף</p> <footer class=source>קידושין מט,א</footer></blockquote> <p>There's a very difficult paragraph at the end of this week's parasha:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> ויהי כי החל האדם לרב על פני האדמה; ובנות ילדו להם׃ <b>ב</b> ויראו בני האלהים את בנות האדם כי טבת הנה; ויקחו להם נשים מכל אשר בחרו׃ <b>ג</b> ויאמר ה׳ לא ידון רוחי באדם לעלם בשגם הוא בשר; והיו ימיו מאה ועשרים שנה׃ <b>ד</b> הנפלים היו בארץ בימים ההם וגם אחרי כן אשר יבאו בני האלהים אל בנות האדם וילדו להם: המה הגברים אשר מעולם אנשי השם׃ </p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק ו</footer></blockquote> <p>How would you translate בני האלהים? There's <a href="http://languagescraps.blogspot.com/2007/10/translator-traitor.html">an Italian saying</a>, <i lang=it>traduttore, traditore</i>, or "the translator is a traitor". Every word has subtleties of pronunciation, variations of meaning and allusions that don't exist in other languages, and, even worse, whatever word the translator chooses will have its own subtleties, variations and allusions that are just <em>wrong</em>. That is true for secular writing; it is even more true when we are trying to translate the Torah.</p> <p>Now the Torah could and should be translated for those who cannot understand it in Hebrew:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> ויאספו כל העם כאיש אחד אל הרחוב אשר לפני שער המים; ויאמרו לעזרא הספר להביא את ספר תורת משה אשר צוה ה׳ את ישראל׃ <b>ב</b> ויביא עזרא הכהן את התורה לפני הקהל מאיש ועד אשה וכל מבין לשמע ביום אחד לחדש השביעי׃ ...</p> <p><b>ה</b> ויפתח עזרא הספר לעיני כל העם כי מעל כל העם היה; וכפתחו עמדו כל העם׃ <b>ו</b> ויברך עזרא את ה׳ האלהים הגדול; ויענו כל העם אמן אמן במעל ידיהם ויקדו וישתחוו לה׳ אפים ארצה׃ <b>ז</b> וישוע ובני ושרביה ימין עקוב שבתי הודיה מעשיה קליטא עזריה יוזבד חנן פלאיה והלוים מבינים את העם לתורה; והעם על עמדם׃ <b>ח</b> ויקראו בספר בתורת האלהים מפרש; ושום שכל ויבינו במקרא׃</p> <footer class=source>נחמיה פרק ח</footer></blockquote> <p>But that was live, with interpreters who could add the appropriate emphasis and was always connected back to the original that was read at the same time. Writing down a translation, committing to a single interpretation, was considered a tragedy. One of the reasons we fast on the tenth of Tevet is that the first translation of the Torah was written then:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p>בשמונה בטבת נכתבה התורה יונית בימי תלמי המלך והיה חושך בעולם שלשה ימים.</p> <footer class=source>שולחן ערוך,אורך חיים, תקפ:ב</footer></blockquote> <p>And most modern translations are explicitly written as commentaries, with footnotes that take up more space than the actual text (see your Artscroll Chumash!), acknowledging the difficulty.<p> <hr/> <p>That said, there are three translations of the Torah that I feel are significant in their own right, and I'd like to see how each of them handle our very disturbing phrase.</p> <p>The first as we mentioned was the translation into Greek, done at the instigation of Ptolemy II of Egypt in third century BCE:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p>דתניא מעשה בתלמי המלך שכינס שבעים ושנים זקנים והכניסן בשבעים ושנים בתים ולא גילה להם על מה כינסן ונכנס אצל כל אחד ואחד ואמר להם כתבו לי תורת משה רבכם נתן הקב״ה בלב כל אחד ואחד עצה והסכימו כולן לדעת אחת וכתבו לו (בראשית א) אלקים ברא בראשית (בראשית א) אעשה אדם בצלם ובדמות (בראשית ב) ויכל ביום הששי וישבות ביום השביעי...</p> <footer class=source>מגילה ט,א-ט,ב</footer></blockquote> <p>This translation (called the Septuagint, or "The Seventy") is significant because it was written as the "public face" of the Torah, bowlderized to avoid the variations of meaning implicit in the original text. It shows us what חז״ל wanted the non-Jews to see in the Torah. It's interesting that the text of the Septuagint that we have now doesn't have a lot of those emendations, possibly because it was "corrected" over the centuries. For instance, (בראשית א:כו)‎ נעשה אדם בצלמנו כדמותנו, which the Gemara says they translated as אעשה אדם בצלם ובדמות, we have as ποιήσωμεν ἄνθρωπον κατ εἰκόνα ἡμετέραν, "Let us make man with an image as our partner". (It's all Greek to me; I'm using Google translate a lot here).</p> <p>The second translation is the Aramaic translation attributed to Onkelos, who was a student of Rabbi Eliezer in the second century CE:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p>וא״ר ירמיה ואיתימא רבי חייא בר אבא תרגום של תורה אונקלוס הגר אמרו מפי ר׳ אליעזר ור׳ יהושע...ותרגום של תורה אונקלוס הגר אמרו והא אמר רב איקא בר אבין אמר רב חננאל אמר רב מאי דכתיב (נחמיה ח) ויקראו בספר תורת האלקים מפורש ושום שכל ויבינו במקרא ויקראו בספר תורת האלקים זה מקרא מפורש זה תרגום ושום שכל אלו הפסוקין ויבינו במקרא אלו פיסקי טעמים ואמרי לה אלו המסורת שכחום וחזרו ויסדום</p> <footer class=source>מגילה ג,א</footer></blockquote> <p>Targum Onkelos is important because it is "authorized"; it represents the translation of the Torah at the level of Pshat that חז״ל wanted the Jews to see, for those who could not study it in the original. Any translation that varies from the Targum needs to justify those changes.</p> <p>The third translation that I would consider important is the King James Bible of 1611. It is a Christian translation and it doesn't teach us anything about the Torah, but its importance is in what it teaches us about <em>English</em>. It, together with the works of Shakespeare, determine what we as English speakers consider literary English. All future translations still echo the cadences and word choices of the King James. As Rabbi J. H. Hertz says in his commentary on the Chumash, it is "of unsurpassed literary beauty". Jewish translations change some words and phrases to reflect the Torah's meaning, but most still sound "biblical". One useful translation (that is now out of copyright) is the Jewish Publication Society translation of 1917, which is basically a corrected King James.</p> <p>The King James version was largely based on the 1530 translation by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Tyndale">William Tyndale</a>, an English Protestant who would be strangled and burned at the stake for his work. He is the one who invented the terms "Passover", "scapegoat" and "eat, drink and be merry". He had to move to Germany to learn Hebrew because England had expelled all the Jews 300 years before.</p> <hr/> <p>So how do we translate בני האלהים?‎ בני obviously means "sons of", but it can also mean "followers of", as in (דברים יד:א)‎ בנים אתם לה׳ אלקיכם.‎ אלקים is of course one of the names of G-d, but אלהים has two profane senses: "leader or judge", as in (שמות ז:א)‎ ויאמר ה׳ אל משה ראה נתתיך אלהים לפרעה or (שמות כב:ח)‎ על כל דבר פשע על שור על חמור על שה על שלמה על כל אבדה אשר יאמר כי הוא זה עד האלהים יבא דבר שניהם; אשר ירשיען אלהים ישלם שנים לרעהו; and "false gods" as in (שמות כב:יט)‎ זבח לאלהים יחרם בלתי לה׳ לבדו.</p> <p>Onkelos's translation is the one we are most familiar with: וַחֲזוֹ בְנֵי רַבְרְבַיָּא יָת בְּנַת אֱנָשָׁא אֲרֵי שַׁפִּירָן אִנוּן וּנְסִיבוּ לְהוֹן נְשִׁין מִכֹּל דִּי אִתְרְעִיאוּ.‎ בני האלהים are the children of the leaders, and this paragraph tells us how the corruption was one of the powerful abusing the weak, asserting a hereditary <i lang="fr"> droit du seigneur</i>. רש״י has a similar interpretation:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p> בני השרים והשופטים. (דבר אחר בני האלקים הם השרים ההולכים בשליחותו של מקום, אף הם היו מתערבים בהם). כל אלהים שבמקרא לשון מרות, וזה יוכיח (שמות ד:טז) ואתה תהיה לו לאלהים, (שם ז:א) ראה נתתיך אלהים.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, שם, ד״ה בני האלהים</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>.אמר רבי יודן טבת כתיב, כשהיו מטיבין אותה מקשטת לכנס לחפה, היה גדול נכנס ובועלה תחלה</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, שם, ד״ה כי טבת הנה</footer></blockquote> <p>Notice Rashi's דבר אחר, though. He raises the possibility that our phrase is קדוש;‎ בני האלקים are those acting in the service of הקב״ה. This is reflected in the translation of the JPS, "the sons of G-d", and is adopted by Ibn Ezra:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p>בני השופטים שהיו עושים בארץ משפט אלקים. ויש אומרים כי האלקים במקום הזה קודש. והבנים הם הקדושים אשר בארץ כטעם בנים אתם. ויש אומרים כי בני האלקים בני שת ובנות האדם בנות משפחת קין. והישר בעיני להיות בני האלקים היודעים דעת עליון...</p> <footer class=source>אבן עזרא, שם, ד״ה בני האלהים</footer></blockquote> <p>The problem being described is not that the powerful were corrupt, it was that the nominally holy were corrupt. Those who should have been the exemplars of purity were instead the worst of all. Ibn Ezra brings up the possibility that the Torah is specifically mentioning the descendants of שת, about whom it is said (בראשית ה:ג)‎ <span lang=he>ויחי אדם שלשים ומאת שנה ויולד <em>בדמותו כצלמו</em>; ויקרא את שמו שת</span>. Hirsch interprets the pasuk similarly, making their sin the intermarriage where the בנות האדם were a bad influence on their spouses who were the בני האלקים.</p> <p>The Septuagint translates it as υἱοὶ τοῦ θεοῦ, which most likely means "sons of G-d" like the JPS translation, but in Greek the name of G-d isn't capitalized. It's possible that it really is referring to the "sons" of false gods, which is the approach the Malbim takes in an interpretation that pulls the whole paragraph together:</p> <blockquote lang=he><p>...מי היו בני אלהים? הם אלה שאמרו שהם בני אלהים ונפלו משמים; והגדות כאלה <em>היו בימים האלה וגם אחרי כן</em>. כי נודע שבכל ספורי העמים הקדמונים יספרו שבימי קדם מלכו על מדינותם בני אלהים שבאו משמים אל הארץ ומלכו עליה ונשאו נשים מבנות האדם ומהם עמדו גבורים ואדירים שרים ומושלים, כמו שימצא הקורא בספורי הדורות שראשית ספורי ממלכת מצרים וחינא ומלכות יון יתחיל מן האלהות וחצי אלהות שהתהלכו על ההרים הרמים ועל ארצם בימי קדם וספרו עליהם נפלאות וגבורות.</p> <p>והם נעשו להם אלילים שהקימו להם מצבות ומזבחות ועבדו אותם בכמה עבודות מתועבות, כי ספרו על אליליהם מעשים של רצח ונאוף וכל מדות רעות, עד שגם עובדיהם התדמו להם בתועבותיהם, כמו האלילה שעבודתה היתה בנאוף, ואליל שעבדו אותו בזבחי אדם, ועבודות האלה עמדו עד אמצע מלכות הרומיים וכ״ש שהיו בתקפם בימי משה, וכל ספורי קורות מצרים התחיל בהאלילים בני אלהים שנפלו משמים ארץ בימי קדם.</p> <p>ולכן הודיע לנו משה רבינו ע״ה כי הנפילים האלה שהם הענקים והעריצים שאמרו עליהם העמים בספוריהם שנפלו משמים והם היו <em>בימים האלה וגם אחרי כן</em>. שאז נמצאו ענקים וגבורי כח נוראים, שאמרו על עצמם שהם בני אלהים שנפלו משמים ועל כן קראן בשם נפילים על שם שנפלו לארץ, והעם התחילו לעבוד אותם, וזה נמשך גם אחרי כן, והם היו <em>בני אלהים שבאו אל בנות האדם וילדו להם</em>, עד שגם הבנים היו נחשבים לאלילים, באשר האמינו שנולדו מבני אלים.</p> <p>אבל דע שכל הספורים וההגדות האלה שעליהם בנו כהני האליל כל עניני העבודה זרה וספורי האלילים והמיטהאלאגיא, שלהם הוא הכל שקר וכזב, היעשה לו אדם אלהים והמ הלא אלהים, רק <em>המה הגבורים אשר מעולם ואנשי השם</em>, שכל גבור שעמד בימים ההם או איש שעשה לו שם ע״י חכמתו ומעשיו היו מיחסים לו אלהות והיו אומרים שנפל משמים והיו מספרים עליו נפלאות והבלים הרבה, וכל הספורים האלא מקורם התחיל מדור המבול ואילך, וזה היה שורש להשחתת האדם ולהעבודת הזרות והנכריות ואמונת שוא והבל אשר לכן ראה ה׳ לקצר ימי האדם שיראו כי אדם המה ובני תמותה ולא אלהים המה.</p></blockquote> <p>I don't know if the Malbim was making a subtle reference to a more contemporary religion that makes claims about the "son of god", but I'd like to think that חז״ל, translating the Torah for a man who fancied himself one of the ancient Pharaohs, descended from the Egyptian gods, had this interpretation in mind when they came to translating בני האלהים, בימים ההם וגם אחרי כן.</p>
