<a href="/%D7%A4%D7%A8%D7%A9%D7%AA+%D7%AA%D7%A8%D7%95%D7%9E%D7%94+%D7%AA%D7%A9%D7%A2%D7%B4%D7%93">Last year</a> we talked about the משכן as a whole. This year I want to look at one little part of it: the כפורת, the cover of the ארון. The text says: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יז</b> ועשית כפרת זהב טהור; אמתים וחצי ארכה ואמה וחצי רחבה׃ <b>יח</b> ועשית שנים כרבים זהב; מקשה תעשה אתם משני קצות הכפרת׃ <b>יט</b> ועשה כרוב אחד מקצה מזה וכרוב אחד מקצה מזה; מן הכפרת תעשו את הכרבים על שני קצותיו׃ <b>כ</b> והיו הכרבים פרשי כנפים למעלה סככים בכנפיהם על הכפרת ופניהם איש אל אחיו; אל הכפרת יהיו פני הכרבים׃ <b>כא</b> ונתת את הכפרת על הארן מלמעלה; ואל הארן תתן את העדת אשר אתן אליך׃ <b>כב</b> ונועדתי לך שם ודברתי אתך מעל הכפרת מבין שני הכרבים אשר על ארון העדת את כל אשר אצוה אותך אל בני ישראל׃</p> <footer class=source>שמות פרק כה</footer></blockquote> First, some technical issues. How big was the כפורת? The Torah says 2.5 אמות by 1.5 אמות. Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan in <a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/0940118726"><cite>The Living Torah</cite></a> uses a value of 18 inches, which sounds right if we assume an אמה means a "cubit", the length of an average forearm (remember a yard,36 inches, was originally the length of the whole arm). But the halachic אמה is clearly larger than that; the gemara says a normal person is 3 אמות tall, and if he stretches out he can reach 4 אמות: <blockquote lang=he><p>לטלטל דברי הכל ארבע אמות אין, טפי לא. והני ד׳ אמות היכא כתיבא? כדתניא (שמות טז) שבו איש תחתיו. כתחתיו [וכמה תחתיו] גופו שלש אמות ואמה כדי לפשוט ידיו ורגליו</p> <footer class=source>עירובין מח,א</footer></blockquote> Now a 3 אמה person would be 4.5 feet tall; that's too short to be normal (and if we say people really were shorter in those days, then their arms would have to be shorter as well). Tosfot on יומא לא,א proposes that גופו שלש אמות means up to the shoulders, which would be OK (say 9-12 inches for the head and neck), but then פשוט ידיו ורגליו would imply that the person could only stretch their arms from the shoulders 18 inches. That doesn't make sense. The <a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/1422609553/">Artscroll <cite>Beit Hamikdash</cite></a> takes a different approach, based on archeological evidence (unusual enough for an Artscroll sefer) on the Temple Mount, concludes that the אמה is 22.6 inches long, which would make an average person 67.8 inches (that's my height!), and a full reach of 90.4 inches, which is what I measured for myself. But that does not fit with the meaning of the word אמה: no one has a forearm one third their own height! There's a possible explanation from the gemara in Eruvin: <blockquote lang=he><p>בעי מיניה: ארבע אמות שאמרו באמה דידיה יהבינן ליה או באמה של קדש יהבינן ליה?</p> <footer class=source>עירובין מח,א</footer></blockquote> So there is clearly a distinction between an "אמה של קדש", a standard אמה of the מקדש, and a personal אמה. And this is hinted in יחזקאל, in his description of the future בית המקדש: <blockquote lang=he><p> והנה חומה מחוץ לבית סביב סביב; וביד האיש קנה המדה שש אמות ב<em>אמה וטפח</em> וימד את רחב הבנין קנה אחד וקומה קנה אחד׃</p> <footer class=source>יחזקאל מ:ה</footer></blockquote> A טפח (handsbreath) is generally assumed to be 1/6 of an אמה, so יחזקאל's אמה של קדש would be 21 inches, which works out perfectly. So somewhere in Tanach history an "אמה" went from a literal אמה (forearm) to a standardized measurement that I suspect was calibrated not to the arm but to the concept of ארבע אמות, ones personal space, which is much more relevant halachically. There's some proof for this idea (that the אמה's length changed from בית ראשון to בית שני), in דברי הימים (which was written in the times of בית שני, describing the construction of בית ראשון): <blockquote lang=he><p>ואלה הוסד שלמה לבנות את בית האלקים; הארך <em>אמות במדה הראשונה</em> אמות ששים ורחב אמות עשרים׃</p> <footer class=source> דברי הימים ב ג:ג</footer></blockquote> And Ibn Ezra mentions this in this week's parasha: <blockquote lang=he><p>אמות המשכן לא ידענו אם הם כאמות יחזקאל שהם אצילה. ובדרך סברא אמות הבית הראשון כן היו. בעבור שמצאנו בדברי הימים כתוב במדה אחרונה.</p> <footer class=source>אבן עזרא, שמות כו:טז, ד״ה עשר אמות</footer></blockquote> So we will assume 18 inches for the ארון's אמה. How thick was it? <blockquote lang=he><p>כפורת טפח. מנלן? דתני רבי חנינא כל הכלים שעשה משה נתנה בהן תורה מדת ארכן ומדת רחבן ומדת קומתן. כפורת מדת ארכה ומדת רחבה נתנה מדת קומתה לא נתנה. צא ולמד מפחות שבכלים שנאמר (שמות כה) ועשית לו מסגרת טפח סביב מה להלן טפח אף כאן טפח.</p> <footer class=source>סוכה ה,א</footer></blockquote> That's a lot of gold. 45 x 27 x 3 = 3645 cubic inches weighs 40,459.5 ounces (the density is<a href="http://www.uu.edu/dept/physics/scienceguys/2000Aug.cfm"> 11.1 ounces per cubic inch</a>), or about 2500 pounds! (For comparison, <a href="https://www.awesomestories.com/asset/view/Golden-Third-Coffin-of-King-Tut-The-Mummy-s-Resting-Place">King Tut's coffin weighed 240 pounds</a>, also made of solid gold). Even if you want to say that the ארון was carried miraculously, we know the total amount of gold used in the משכן was 87,730 shekels (שמות לח:כד). Archeologically,<a href="http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/History/weightsandmeasures.html"> a shekel was about 10 grams</a>, so the total gold used was 87,730 ✕ 10 ✕ 0.00220462 pounds per gram = 1934 pounds. That's for everything! So I would assume that the כפורת was hollow: an inverted box with some sort of internal baffling to keep it from collapsing. The Ibn Ezra has an interesting comment: <blockquote lang=he><p>והכפורת היתה זהב כלה, וכפי מה שקבלנו מאבותינו ככר אחד היתה.</p> <footer class=source>אבן עזרא, שמות לח:כד, ד״ה כל הזהב</footer></blockquote> Which would be a weight of 30 kilos, or 66 pounds. Rabbi Kaplan estimates that, if that includes the כרבים, the כפורת would be 1/8 inch thick. <hr/> But that's the easy question. The hard one is the things on top of the כפורת: the כרבים. Rashi explains דמות פרצוף תינוק להם, from the gemara: <blockquote lang=he><p>ומאי כרוב? א״ר אבהו כרביא שכן בבבל קורין לינוקא, רביא.</p> <footer class=source>סוכה ה,א</footer></blockquote> And they had wings from the text itself, which is where we get the iconic image of "cherubic" angels. Rashi in בראשית gives a different explanation: <blockquote lang=he><p> ויגרש את האדם; וישכן מקדם לגן עדן את הכרבים ואת להט החרב המתהפכת לשמר את דרך עץ החיים׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית ג:כד</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>מלאכי חבלה</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, שם, ד״ה את הכרבים</footer></blockquote> Rabbi Meir Goldwicht asks in <a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/1592643248"><cite>Mitokh Ha-Ohel</cite> on the Parasha</a>, "How can the <i lang=he>keruvim</i> have "double faces", on the one hand appearing as children, and on the other hand being like angels of destruction?" At one level, that's a joke: anyone who's had children knows they <em>are</em> little angels of destruction. On a deeper level, the question is, what are these כרבים supposed to symbolize? There are many explanations given for the symbolism of the משכן (Rabbi Gil Student has an <a href="http://www.torahmusings.com/2015/02/what-does-the-mishkan-mean/">overview</a>). The Ramban famously takes it as a reconstruction of the Sinai experience: <blockquote lang=he><p> וסוד המשכן הוא, שיהיה הכבוד אשר שכן על הר סיני שוכן עליו בנסתר. וכמו שנאמר שם (לעיל כד טז) וישכן כבוד ה' על הר סיני...כן כתוב במשכן וכבוד ה׳ מלא את המשכן (להלן מ לד)...והיה במשכן תמיד עם ישראל הכבוד שנראה להם בהר סיני. ובבא משה (להלן לד לד) היה אליו הדבור אשר נדבר לו בהר סיני...במשכן כתיב (במדבר ז פט) וישמע את הקול מדבר אליו מעל הכפרת מבין שני הכרובים וידבר אליו...כדרך ודבריו שמעת מתוך האש (דברים ד לו), ועל כן היו שניהם זהב.</p> <footer class=source>רמב״ן, שמות כה:א</footer></blockquote> And the כרבים were part of that experience: <blockquote lang=he><p>אשכון ביניהם לקבל תפלתם ועבודתם באותו האופן שאני מראה אותך שכינתי בהר, על הכפרת בין שני הכרובים עם תבנית המשכן ועם תבנית כל כליו. כי אמנם תבנית המשכן תורה על כרובים, שהם שרפים עומדים ממעל לו <em>הנראים לנביאים</em>...וכן <em>ראוי שיהיו בישראל כל קדושיו מחוברים אל ההמון להבין ולהורות</em>.</p> <footer class=source>ספורנו, שמות כה:ט</footer></blockquote> Seforno's comment that the כרבים were נראים לנביאים is based on the Rambam's idea that "angels" as manifestations of G-d's will have no <em>real</em> form: <blockquote lang=en><p>The angels are likewise incorporeal: they are intelligences without matter, but they are nevertheless created beings, and God created them...In Bereshith Rabbah (on Gen. iii. 24) we read the following remark of our Sages: "The angel is called 'the flame of the sword which turned every way' (Gen. iii. 24), in accordance with the words, 'His ministers a flaming fire' (Ps. civ. 4); the attribute, 'which turned every way' is added, because angels are changeable in form they appear at one time as males, at another as females; now as spirits; now as angels." By this remark they clearly stated that angels are incorporeal, and have no permanent bodily form independent of the mind [of him who perceives them], they exist entirely in prophetic vision, and depend on the action of the imaginative power.</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://www.sacred-texts.com/jud/gfp/gfp059.htm"><cite>Guide for the Perplexed</cite>, 1:XLIX</a></footer></blockquote> And the Rambam has an interesting comment in his "Treatise on Resurrection" about the incorporeality of angels: <blockquote lang=he><p>נאמין אנחנו שהמלאכים אינם גופות, ושבני העולם הבא נפשות נבדלות, רוצה לומר דעות. וכבר בארנו ראיות מן התורה על זה במאמרנו המכונה <cite>מורה הנבוכים</cite>. </p> <p>ואם לא ירצה להאמין זה אחד מן ההמון, וייטב בעיניו להאמין כי המלאכים גוף, ושהם יאכלו גם כן, אחר שבא בפסוק <em>ויאכלו</em>...אנחנו לא נקפיד עליו בזה, ולא נשימהו לכופר, ולא נרחיק מעליו...ולוואי כל סכל לא יסכל רק זה השיעור, ונהיה בטוחים שתמלט אמונתם מאמונת הגשמות בבורא יתברך, ואין הזק אם יאמינוהו בנבראים הנבדלים. </p> <footer class=source>רמב״ם, <a href="http://www.daat.ac.il/daat/mahshevt/mekorot/thiyat-2.htm">מאמר תחיית המתים</a></footer></blockquote> But then actually making a physical form is incredibly dangerous. The Torah itself realizes this, and warns against over-reading the command to fashion כרבים: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יח</b> ויאמר ה׳ אל משה כה תאמר אל בני ישראל; אתם ראיתם כי מן השמים דברתי עמכם׃ <b>יט</b> לא תעשון אתי; אלהי כסף ואלהי זהב לא תעשו לכם׃</p> <footer class=source>שמות פרק כ</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>לא תעשון אתי</em>: לא תעשון דמות שמשי המשמשים לפני במרום.</p> <p><em>אלהי כסף</em>: בא להזהיר על הכרובים, שאתה עושה לעמוד אתי, שלא יהיו של כסף, שאם שניתם לעשותם של כסף הרי הן לפני כאלהות.</p> <p><em>ואלהי זהב</em>: בא להזהיר שלא יוסיף על שנים, שאם עשית ארבעה, הרי הן לפני כאלהי זהב.</p> <p><em>לא תעשו לכם</em>: לא תאמר הריני עושה כרובים בבתי כנסיות ובבתי מדרשות כדרך שאני עושה בבית עולמים, לכך נאמר לא תעשו לכם.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, שמות כ:יט</footer></blockquote> And in fact, we see in Jewish history that the כרבים were taken as Jewish idols. The Philistines clearly saw it that way: <blockquote lang=he><p> <b>ד</b> וישלח העם שלה וישאו משם את ארון ברית ה׳ צבא־ות ישב הכרבים; ושם שני בני עלי עם ארון ברית האלקים חפני ופינחס׃ <b>ה</b> ויהי כבוא ארון ברית ה׳ אל המחנה וירעו כל ישראל תרועה גדולה; ותהם הארץ׃ <b>ו</b> וישמעו פלשתים את קול התרועה ויאמרו מה קול התרועה הגדולה הזאת במחנה העברים; וידעו כי ארון ה׳ בא אל המחנה׃ <b>ז</b> ויראו הפלשתים כי אמרו בא אלהים אל המחנה; ויאמרו אוי לנו כי לא היתה כזאת אתמול שלשם׃ <b>ח</b> אוי לנו מי יצילנו מיד האלהים האדירים האלה; אלה <em>הם</em> האלהים המכים את מצרים בכל מכה במדבר׃</p> <footer class=source>שמואל א פרק ד</footer></blockquote> As did the Romans, thousands of years later: <blockquote lang=he><p>מר ריש לקיש בשעה שנכנסו נכרים להיכל ראו כרובים המעורין זה בזה הוציאון לשוק ואמרו ישראל הללו שברכתן ברכה וקללתן קללה יעסקו בדברים הללו מיד הזילום שנאמר (איכה א) כל מכבדיה הזילוה כי ראו ערותה.</p> <footer class=source>יומא נד,ב</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=en><p>As per Yoma 53b, the Ark of Testimony, with the keruvim atop its cover, were hidden in an underground chamber in the Holy Temple 22 years before the destruction of the First Temple, where they remain to this day. Thus, neither the Babylonians nor the Romans would have found the Ark in the Holy of Holies. The Talmud explains that the keruvim that were dragged out into the streets were not the keruvim from on top of the Ark, but reliefs which decorated the walls of the Holy of Holies...</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/2267/jewish/Seven-Degrees-of-Consolation.htm">Chabad.org, <cite>Seven Degrees of Consolation</cite></a></footer></blockquote> So why have these statues in the Holy of Holies? Seforno hints at the answer: they represent part of the Heavenly host, what is called in Kabbalah the <i lang=he>Merkava</i>: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> וָאֶרְאֶה וְהִנֵּה אֶל הָרָקִיעַ אֲשֶׁר עַל רֹאשׁ הַכְּרֻבִים כְּאֶבֶן סַפִּיר כְּמַרְאֵה דְּמוּת כִּסֵּא נִרְאָה עֲלֵיהֶם׃ ...<b>כ</b> הִיא הַחַיָּה אֲשֶׁר רָאִיתִי תַּחַת אֱ־לֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בִּנְהַר כְּבָר; וָאֵדַע כִּי כְרוּבִים הֵמָּה׃ </p> <footer class=source>יחזקאל פרק י</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יא</b> ויתן דויד לשלמה בנו את תבנית האולם ואת בתיו וגנזכיו ועליתיו וחדריו הפנימים ובית הכפרת׃ ...<b>יח</b> ולמזבח הקטרת זהב מזקק במשקל; ולתבנית ה<em>מרכבה</em> הכרובים זהב לפרשים וסככים על ארון ברית ה׳׃ <b>יט</b> הכל בכתב מיד ה׳ עלי השכיל כל מלאכות התבנית</p> <footer class=source>דברי הימים א פרק כח</footer></blockquote> The מרכבה is that which holds the כבוד ה, the manifestation of the Divine in the physical world. Which means that, whatever the esoteric symbolism of יחזקאל's vision, in this world, it is <em>human beings</em> who have the ability to be the מרכבה: <blockquote lang=he><p>אמר ר״ל האבות הן הן המרכבה שנא׳ (בראשית יז) ויעל אלקים מעל אברהם...</p> <footer class=source>בראשית רבה (וילנא) פרשה פב ד״ה ויעל מעליו</footer></blockquote> And at Sinai it was the Jewish people as whole who were the מרכבה: <blockquote lang=he><p>כשבאו אל הר סיני ועשו המשכן ושב הקדוש ברוך הוא והשרה שכינתו ביניהם אז שבו אל מעלת אבותם, שהיה סוד א־לוה עלי אהליהם, והם הם המרכבה (ב״ר מז ח), ואז נחשבו גאולים ולכן נשלם הספר הזה בהשלימו ענין המשכן ובהיות כבוד ה׳ מלא אותו תמיד.</p> <footer class=source>רמב״ן הקדמה לספר שמות</footer></blockquote> We could mention the symbolism of the four-faced כרבים in יחזקאל's vision, that corresponded to the symbols on the four flags of the camp of Israel (man, lion, ox and eagle). So what does it mean, to "be the merkava"? It is to be a קידוש ה׳, as Seforno said ראוי שיהיו בישראל כל קדושיו מחוברים אל ההמון להבין ולהורות. And we need to be reminded of our role, and our history as part of the experience of Sinai. The symbolism of the כרבים is not meant to be a representation of angels <i lang=la>per se</i>; that would be a violation of לא תעשון אתי. They are meant to be a representation of <em>us</em>, and the level that we once attained and still strive toward. In the times of the בית המקדש, the people had the opportunity to see how close we could come to הקב״ה: <blockquote lang=he><p> אמר רב קטינא בשעה שהיו ישראל עולין לרגל מגללין להם את הפרוכת ומראין להם את הכרובים שהיו מעורים זה בזה ואומרים להן ראו חבתכם לפני המקום כחבת זכר ונקבה מתיב רב חסדא (במדבר ד) ולא יבואו לראות כבלע את הקדש ואמר רב יהודה אמר רב בשעת הכנסת כלים לנרתק שלהם.</p> <footer class=source>יומא נד,א</footer></blockquote> And this lesson is important enough to warrant the risk of misinterpreting the statues. Rav Soloveitchik explains: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>י</b> אתה בן אדם הגד את בית ישראל את הבית ...׃ <b>יא</b> ...ואת כל חקתיו וכל צורתו וכל תורתו הודע אותם וכתב לעיניהם; וישמרו את כל צורתו ואת כל חקתיו ועשו אותם׃</p> <footer class=source>יחזקאל פרק מג</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=en><p>The Rav raised [a] question from a seemingly difficult statement of the sages on a verse in Parashat Terumah: (שמות כה:מ) וראה ועשה; בתבניתם אשר אתה מראה בהר. Rashi quotes the Talmud's explanation:</p> <blockquote lang=he>מגיד שנתקשה משה במעשה המנורה, עד שהראה לו הקב״ה מנורה של אש.</blockquote> <p>What was the nature of the great difficulty that Moshe encountered in building the <i lang=he>Mishkan</i>? [Here the Rav seems to expand the question from the Menorah to the entire Mishkan (my note)]</p> <p>When a person explores the possibility of purchasing a home, two main things will occupy his attention: the home's measurements, dimensions and cost, and its appearance. Similarly, the prophet Yehezkel pointed out that there are two crucial factors, one of which is the <i lang=he>tzurah</i>. The term <i lang=he>hukotav</i> refers to physical measurements, and <i lang=he>tzurotav</i> refers to the home's architechture, its ability to elevate the spirit and create a sense of harmony.</p> ... <p>If someone travels to Jerusalem and promises his friend he will send back reports of all that he has seen and experienced, and the friend who has stayed home studies all the reports carefully, can we honestly say that the friend knows Jerusalem? Of course not...The sages were referring to this when they said (Mechilta 19.9), "One cannot compare hearing to seeing".</p> ... <p>G-d wanted a <i lang=he>Mishkan</i> that would attract and inspire the Jewish people. This could not be accomplished by means of <i lang=he>hukotav</i> but primarily through <i lang=he>tzurotav</i>...It is this second element of <i lang=he>tzurah</i> that Moshe found difficult. In effect, he said to G-d, “Once you have shown me the image of the <i lang=he>Mishkan</i> and the <i lang=he>menorah</i>, how shall I convey their inner essence to the people?”</p> ... <p>The <i lang=he>menorah</i> and the <i lang=he>Mishkan</i>...become imbued with a quality that raises humanity to a higher reality, a metaphysical world, a world of prophecy and prophets.</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://www.amazon.com//dp/9655240460">Rabbi Avishai David, <cite>Darosh Darash Yosef: Discourses of Rav Yosef Dov Halevi Soloveitchik on the Weekly Parashah</cite></a>, pp 177-181</footer></blockquote> So the כרבים are there to let us relive our role at Sinai as the carriers of ה׳'s presence in the world, to inspire us to continue in that role and to remind us of the relationship that we have with הקב״ה. No wonder they can be seen both as רביא, innocent children full of potential, and as מלאכי חבלה, forces of destruction, if we get that wrong.
