This is largely based on Zohar Atkins's [_From Spectacle to Inner Quiet_](https://etzhasadeh.substack.com/p/from-spectacle-to-inner-quiet).

This week's parsha includes the sin of the Golden Calf, and then the giving of the second לוחות:

>יח ויאמר; הראני נא את כבדך׃...כ ויאמר לא תוכל לראת את פני; כי לא יראני האדם וחי׃ כא ויאמר ה׳ הנה מקום אתי; ונצבת על הצור׃
כב והיה בעבר כבדי ושמתיך בנקרת הצור; ושכתי כפי עליך עד עברי׃

The midrash notes the difference between the giving of the first לוחות and the second. The first was surrounded by glorious special effects, surround sound and a synesthetic experience that shook the world. And it failed.

>הלוחות ראשונות על שנתנו בפמבי, לפיכך שלטה בהם עין הרע ונשתברו. וכאן אמר לו הקדוש ברוך הוא: אין לך יפה מן הצניעות, שנאמר (מיכה ו:ח):וּמָה ה' דּוֹרֵשׁ מִמְּךָ כִּי אִם עֲשׂוֹת מִשְׁפָּט וְאַהֲבַת חֶסֶד וְהַצְנֵעַ לֶכֶת [עִם אֱלֹקֶיךָ].

The משך חכמה connects the spectacle to the famous aggadah of כפה עליהם ההר כגיגית:

>(שמות יט:יז) וַיִּתְיַצְּבוּ בְּתַחְתִּית הָהָר. א״ר אבדימי בר חמא בר חסא: מלמד שכפה הקב"ה עליהם את ההר כגיגית ואמר להם אם אתם מקבלים התורה מוטב ואם לאו שם תהא קבורתכם.

And that inability to say no meant that their acceptance of the Torah was incomplete.

>The people are accustomed to spectacle. They watched their pursuant enemies drown in the sea as they walked through it, singing and dancing. They witnessed Egyptian civilization collapse under the double weight of both supernatural plague and cognitive dissonance. And they received a Divine Revelation at Sinai with bombast. The mountain quaked, the people saw voices. The experience was synesthetic, and, as Yehuda Halevi argues, it was distinguished from other revelations by the magnitude of its collective energy: an estimated 1.2 million people all shared in the same event. And yet, as Moses ascends the mountain, the people grow impatient...The people got a thrill from public spectacle, from a constant drip of prophetic content, but were unable to sit by themselves in the quietude and solitude of their own thoughts. They had become miracle junkies.

And that makes the עגל הזהב almost inevitable.

But they get better.

>אמר רבא: אף על פי כן הדור קבלוה בימי אחשורוש, דכתיב (אסתר ט:כז): קִיְּמוּ וְקִבְּלוּ הַיְּהוּדִים—קיימו מה שקיבלו כבר.

The nature of the time of אסתר and the miracle of Purim was an utter lack of spectacle and open miracles.

>אסתר מן התורה מנין? (דברים לא:יח) וְאָנֹכִי הַסְתֵּר אַסְתִּיר [פָּנַי בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא].

Rabbi Sacks connects this to Moshe's argument that ה׳ should not destroy the Jewish people after the עגל הזהב:

>ויאמר אם נא מצאתי חן בעיניך  אדנ־י  ילך נא אדני  בקרבנו;  כי עם קשה ערף הוא  וסלחת לעוננו ולחטאתנו ונחלתנו׃

We usually translate the כי of כי עם קשה ערף הוא as “despite”: “despite the fact that they are stubborn, you should forgive them”. But Rabbi Sacks says כי means, as it usually does, “because” : “forgive them *because* they are stubborn”; that stubbornness may have led them astray now, but it keep them faithful in the future.

>The real test of faith came when G-d was hidden. Rava’s quotation from the Book of Esther is pointed and precise. Megillat Esther does not contain the name of G-d. The rabbis suggested that the name Esther is an allusion to the phrase /haster astir et panai/, “I will surely hide My face.” The book relates the first warrant for genocide against the Jewish people. That Jews remained Jews under such conditions was proof positive that they did indeed reaffirm the covenant. Obstinate in their disbelief during much of the biblical era, they became obstinate in their belief ever afterwards. Faced with G-d’s presence, they disobeyed Him. Confronted with His absence, they stayed faithful to Him. That is the paradox of the stiff-necked people.

We do better without the pomp and circumstance. We may be impressed with spectacle, but it fades fast. There's a striking example of that in ספר מלכים, when Eliyahu confronts the prophets of Baal:

>לא ויקח אליהו שתים עשרה אבנים כמספר שבטי בני יעקב אשר היה דבר ה׳ אליו לאמר ישראל יהיה שמך׃ לב ויבנה את האבנים מזבח בשם ה׳; ויעש תעלה כבית סאתים זרע סביב למזבח׃ לג ויערך את העצים; וינתח את הפר וישם על העצים׃ לד ויאמר מלאו ארבעה כדים מים ויצקו על העלה ועל העצים; ויאמר שנו וישנו ויאמר שלשו וישלשו׃ לה וילכו המים סביב למזבח; וגם את התעלה מלא מים׃...לח ותפל אש ה׳ ותאכל את העלה ואת העצים ואת האבנים ואת העפר; ואת המים אשר בתעלה לחכה׃ לט וירא כל העם ויפלו על פניהם; ויאמרו ה׳ הוא האלקים ה׳ הוא האלקים׃

It's a great miracle with fire from heaven, and everyone cries out ה׳ הוא האלקים  ה׳ הוא האלקים! But it doesn't last; a paragraph later Eliyahu is on the run for his life.

>ב ותשלח איזבל מלאך אל אליהו לאמר; כה יעשון אלקים וכה יוספון כי כעת מחר אשים את נפשך כנפש אחד מהם׃ ג וירא ויקם וילך אל נפשו ויבא באר שבע אשר ליהודה; וינח את נערו שם׃

And ה׳ leads him to that very same cave that Moshe entered to get the second, low key לוחות.

>ח ויקם ויאכל וישתה; וילך בכח האכילה ההיא ארבעים יום וארבעים לילה עד הר האלקים חרב׃ ט ויבא שם אל המערה וילן שם; והנה דבר ה׳ אליו ויאמר לו מה לך פה אליהו׃

And ה׳ makes the point that our encounter with the divine in a sound and light show doesn't last. But Eliyahu doesn't get the message.

>י ויאמר קנא קנאתי לה׳ אלקי צבאו־ת כי עזבו בריתך בני ישראל את מזבחתיך הרסו ואת נביאיך הרגו בחרב; ואותר אני לבדי ויבקשו את נפשי לקחתה׃ יא ויאמר צא ועמדת בהר לפני ה׳ והנה ה׳ עבר ורוח גדולה וחזק מפרק הרים ומשבר סלעים לפני ה׳ לא ברוח ה׳; ואחר הרוח רעש לא ברעש ה׳׃ יב ואחר הרעש אש לא באש ה׳; ואחר האש קול דממה דקה׃ יג ויהי כשמע אליהו וילט פניו באדרתו ויצא ויעמד פתח המערה; והנה אליו קול ויאמר מה לך פה אליהו׃ יד ויאמר קנא קנאתי לה׳ אלקי צבאו־ת כי עזבו בריתך בני ישראל את מזבחתיך הרסו ואת נביאיך הרגו בחרב; ואותר אני לבדי ויבקשו את נפשי לקחתה׃

And so Eliyahu is fired and has to train his replacement.

>Jewish life accepts that we must live with uncertainty and absence, cultivate conviction from small and subtle miracles, and not outsource our inner confidence to the volume of the crowd...The historicity of the Revelation is not enough to keep the flame alive. It couldn’t even keep it alive for the generation that participated in it. That collective event needed to happen so that all could feel a part of it, regardless of literacy or class. But Jewish life is about being able to endure the apparent hiddenness of God, the apparent departure of Moses, to live “under the sun.” That kind of strength—which enables one to know oneself without having to be histrionic about it—leads to an existential modesty. It is the modesty of Esther, which draws on the modesty of G-d.

After Purim, we don't look for miracles to establish our faith. We look to our faith to find the miracle.
