This week's parsha includes the prohibition of שעטנז: {:he .lines} ><b>ט</b> לא תזרע כרמך כלאים; פן תקדש המלאה הזרע אשר תזרע ותבואת הכרם׃ <b>י</b> לא תחרש בשור ובחמר יחדו׃ <b>יא</b> לא תלבש שעטנז צמר ופשתים יחדו׃ <b>יב</b> גדלים תעשה לך על ארבע כנפות כסותך אשר תכסה בה׃ --דברים פרק כב I included that last pasuk, because it tells us something about שעטנז and ציצית: {:he} ><em>גדלים תעשה לך</em>: אף מן הכלאים, לכך סמכן הכתוב. --רש״י, דברים כב:יב What is שעטנז? The word occurs one other place, in the same context: {:he .lines} >את חקתי תשמרו בהמתך לא תרביע כלאים שדך לא תזרע כלאים; ובגד כלאים שעטנז לא יעלה עליך׃ --ויקרא יט:יט כלאים, a mixture, presumably comes from a Semtic root ("both" in Arabic is اهما, /kilahuma/). But what does שעטנז come from? It's a 5-letter root, which simply doesn't exist. Rashi, citing Sifrei, suggests that it is an acronym: {:he} ><em>שעטנז</em>: לשון ערוב. ורבותינו פרשו: שׁוּעַ טָווּי וְנוּז (combed, spun, and woven). --רש״י, דברים כב:יא But I think that it is clear that is a halachic mnemonic, not etymology. The word itself seems to be Egyptian: >That /sha’atnez/ is a non-Hebraic word can be told from a glance at its five consonants. A Hebrew noun can have five consonants too, but never more than four that belong to its root and are not added suffixes or prefixes. However, none of the five consonants of שעטנז, to give the word its Hebrew spelling, are additions of this sort. This clearly points to a borrowing, even though the ancient rabbis tried not very convincingly to explain the word as an acronym of three other Hebrew words. > Egyptian, Aramaic, and Persian are the principal providers of loanwords in the Bible, and since Aramaic is a sister Semitic language with a three- or four-consonant root structure like Hebrew’s, and Persian is an influence only in the Bible’s historically late books, Egyptian is indeed the leading candidate in this case. The eminent Bible scholar William Albright even ventured to identify the Egyptian expression behind /sha’atnez/. The word, he conjectured, came from ancient Egyptian {:lang=cop}/sht/ (Egyptologists are not sure how the language was vocalized), “weave” or “fabric,” and {:lang=cop}/n’dz/, “false” (in Egyptian, adjectives always followed their nouns). > Albright was not guessing in the dark. He had before him the text of the Septuagint, the Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible made in Egypt in the 3rd and 2nd centuries BCE, which renders /sha’atnez/ as {:el}/kibdelos/, κίβδηλος, “adulterated” or “spurious.” (A {:el}/kibdelía/ in Greek was an undeclared alloy of a more valuable metal with a baser one; hence, the word also denoted something counterfeit or fake.) At least some of the translators of the Septuagint must have known Coptic, the descendant of ancient Egyptian still spoken in their day in most of Egypt. But it doesn't explain *why* it is forbidden. Rambam says it's because such a mixture was worn by priests of עבודה זרה. That's a common theme in Rambam's understanding of טעמי המצוות: >For the same reason, the wearing of garments made of linen and wool is prohibited: the heathen priests adorned themselves with garments containing vegetable and animal material, whilst they held in their hand a seal made of a mineral. This you find written in their books. --_Guide for the Perplexed_, III:37, Friedländer translation Yosef Bechor Shor has an almost opposite reason: some of the בגדי כהונה were made of linen and wool, and the Torah forbids wearing it in a secular context: {:he} ><em>לא תלבש שעטנז</em>: משום דבגדי כהונה של כלאים, ולא ישתמש בשרביטו של מלך, דאף הם לשם מצוה כמו בגדי כהונה. --בכור שור, דברים כב:יא And that goes with the fact that שעטנז is permitted in ציצית. It's our own personal "בגדי כהונה". But really those reasons go together. Such a cloth is קדש, in the sense that כלאי הכרם is תקדש המלאה הזרע אשר תזרע.‎ “קדוש” means "set aside in a way that makes it forbidden", whether for good or for bad. {:he} ><em>פן תקדש</em>: כתרגומו "תסתאב", כל דבר הנתעב על האדם, בין לשבח כגון הקדש, בין לגנאי כגון אסור, נופל בו לשון קדוש, כמו (ישעיהו סה:ה) אַל תִּגַּשׁ בִּי כִּי קִדַּשְׁתִּיךָ. --רש״י, דברים כב:ט So I would translate קדוש in this sense as "taboo", which has exactly that connotation: {:.lines} >taboo ...from Proto-Oceanic <i lang=to>tabu</i> “sacred, forbidden”. --Online Etymology Dictionary, [taboo](https://www.etymonline.com/word/taboo) ---- So why is a mixture of linen and wool considered holy? We discussed this in <//פרשת חיי שרה תשפ״ד>. There is only one other place in תנ״ך where the phrase צמר ופשתים occurs. {:he} >דרשה צמר ופשתים; ותעש בחפץ כפיה׃ --משלי לא:יג {:he} > התחיל אברהם לבכות עליה ולומר (משלי לא:י) אֵשֶׁת חַיִל מִי יִמְצָא...(משלי לא:יג) דָּרְשָׁה צֶמֶר וּפִשְׁתִּים, בין יצחק לישמעאל, שאמרה (בראשית כא:י) גָּרֵשׁ הָאָמָה הַזֹּאת וְאֶת בְּנָהּ. --מדרש תנחומא, חיי שרה ד צמר ופשתים symbolize two incompatible personalities, each of whom may do fine on their own, but when combined are explosive. This goes back to the first conflict ever: {:he} ><em>צמר ופשתים יחדו</em>: לפי שבאה תקלה ע״י שניהם, נאסרו להיות בבת אחת: הבל הביא מבכורות צאנו קין הביא מזרע פשתן. --חזקוני, דברים כב:יא {:he} ><b>א</b> והאדם ידע את חוה אשתו; ותהר ותלד את קין ותאמר קניתי איש את ה׳׃ <b>ב</b> ותסף ללדת את אחיו את הבל; ויהי הבל רעה צאן וקין היה עבד אדמה׃ <b>ג</b> ויהי מקץ ימים; ויבא קין מפרי האדמה מנחה לה׳׃ <b>ד</b> והבל הביא גם הוא מבכרות צאנו ומחלבהן; וישע ה׳ אל הבל ואל מנחתו׃ <b> ה</b> ואל קין ואל מנחתו לא שעה; ויחר לקין מאד ויפלו פניו׃ --בראשית פרק ד {:he} ><em>מפרי האדמה</em>:...ויש אגדה שאומרת זרע פשתן היה. --רש״י, בראשית ד:ג And Sara sees this, and realizes that for the ultimate good of both children, they need to be separated. >[G-d] tells Abraham not merely to obey Sarah but to accept her vision of things--less confused and mulifaceted than his. Rav Soloveitchik called our existence a חיה טראגית, but we can still put on our ציצית and reach a higher סִינתֶיזָה.
