This week's parsha includes the תוכחה. {:he} ><b>מה</b> ובאו עליך כל הקללות האלה ורדפוך והשיגוך עד השמדך; כי לא שמעת בקול ה׳ אלקיך לשמר מצותיו וחקתיו אשר צוך׃ <b>מו</b> והיו בך לאות ולמופת; ובזרעך עד עולם׃ <b>מז</b> תחת אשר לא עבדת את ה׳ אלקיך בשמחה ובטוב לבב מרב כל׃ <b>מח</b> ועבדת את איביך אשר ישלחנו ה׳ בך ברעב ובצמא ובעירם ובחסר כל; ונתן על ברזל על צוארך עד השמידו אתך׃ --דברים פרק כח Most commentaries focus on the בשמחה ובטוב לבב, the need to do מצוות with joy. I want to focus on מרב כל. In modern Hebrew, רֹב means "the majority", but in תנ״ך, it usually means "a lot". So Artscroll translates תחת אשר לא עבדת את ה׳ אלקיך...מרב כל as "because you did not serve <span class=displayfont>Hashem</span>, your G-d...when everything was abundant". But what is "everything"? >You can't have everything. Where would you put it? --[Steven Wright](https://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/steven_wright_138072) So the מפרשים explain that it's not literal. {:he} ><em>מרב כל</em>: בעוד שהיה לך כל טוב. --רש״י, דברים כח:מז {:he} >והשתא המ״ם של ”מרוב“ תשמש במקום ”מן“, כי מן רוב כל שהיה לכם היה לכם לעבוד בשמחה. --גור אריה, דברים כח:מז {:he} ><em>מרב כל</em>: אשר תתאוה או כל צורך. --אבן עזרא, דברים כח:מז But then why מרב כל? Why not just מרב, "with abundance"? If I were a Kabbalist, I would point out that כל represents the ספירה of יסוד. {:he} >לך ה׳ הגדלה והגבורה והתפארת והנצח וההוד כי כל בשמים ובארץ; לך ה׳ הממלכה והמתנשא לכל לראש׃ --דברי הימים א כט:יא {:he} >בפסוק לְךָ ה׳ הַגְּדֻלָּה וְהַגְּבוּרָה, המרמז על שבע הספירות האחרונות, מרומזת מידת היסוד בתיבת ”כל“, מתוך המילים כִּי כֹל בַּשָּׁמַיִם וּבָאָרֶץ. וזהו ענינה, לקשר את ההשפעות של כל המידות... > אצל האדם עניינה של ספירת היסוד הוא השפעה והמשכה מהאדם אל זולתו, והיא המאפשרת לו לצמצם את עצמו במטרה להסביר לזולתו. --חב"דפדיה, [_ספירת היסוד_](https://chabadpedia.co.il/index.php/%D7%A1%D7%A4%D7%99%D7%A8%D7%AA_%D7%94%D7%99%D7%A1%D7%95%D7%93) מרב כל then would mean "when you had a dense interpersonal network", when you weren't isolated, which is part of the curse of גלות. {:he} ><em>ואתכם אזרה בגוים</em>: זו מדה קשה, שבשעה שבני המדינה גולים למקום אחד, רואים זה את זה ומתנחמין. וישראל נזרו כבמזרה כאדם הזורה שעורים בנפה ואין אחת מהן דבוקה בחברתה. --רש"י, ויקרא כו:לג But I'm not a Kabbalist, so I will go in a different direction. We talked about the implications of כל in <//פרשת חיי שרה תשפ״ב>. We ask for the blessing of כל in ברכת המזון: {:he} >הָרַחֲמָן הוּא יְבָרֵךְ...אוֹתָנוּ וְאֶת־כָּל־אֲשֶׁר לָנוּ, כְּמוֹ שֶׁנִּתְבָּרְכוּ אֲבוֹתֵֽינוּ, אַבְרָהָם יִצְחָק וְיַעֲקֹב: בַּכֹּל, מִכֹּל, כֹּל, כֵּן יְבָרֵךְ אוֹתָנוּ כֻּלָּנוּ יַחַד, בִּבְרָכָה שְׁלֵמָה, וְנֹאמַר אָמֵן. --ברכת המזון And that comes from the Torah. Each of the אבות were blessed with some variation on כל. {:he} >ואברהם זקן בא בימים; וה׳ ברך את אברהם *בכל*׃ --בראשית כד:א {:he} > ויחרד יצחק חרדה גדלה עד מאד ויאמר מי אפוא הוא הצד ציד ויבא לי ואכל *מכל* בטרם תבוא ואברכהו; גם ברוך יהיה׃ --בראשית כז:לג {:he} ><b>י</b> ויאמר יעקב אל נא אם נא מצאתי חן בעיניך ולקחת מנחתי מידי; כי על כן ראיתי פניך כראת פני אלקים ותרצני׃ <b>יא</b> קח נא את ברכתי אשר הבאת לך כי חנני אלקים וכי יש לי *כל*; ויפצר בו ויקח׃ --בראשית פרק לג And to see what that means, contrast Yaakov's comment with Esav's: {:he} >ויאמר עשו יש לי *רב*; אחי יהי לך אשר לך׃ --בראשית לג:ט {:he} ><em>ויאמר עשו יש לי רב</em>: משמע רב אבל לא כל, ויעקב אמר ”כי חנני אלקים וכי יש לי כל“, לפי שהרשעים אע"פ שיש להם כל כסף וזהב שבעולם מ"מ נראה להם שעדיין הם חסרים, ויש להם רב אבל לא כל צרכם, לכך אמר עשו יש לי רב אבל לא כל כי עדיין חסרים המה, יש בידו מנה מתאוה למאתים, והצדיקים בהפך זה כי אפילו אם יש מעט בידם הם מסתפקים בו ושמחים בחלקם, ונראה כאלו יש להם כל. --כלי יקר, בראשית לג:ט To sum up, the ברכה of בַּכֹּל מִכֹּל כֹּל is the message of the mishna: {:he} >איזהו עשיר? השמח בחלקו. --משנה אבות ד:א Zohar Atkins has an interesting perspective on this ברכת הכל. Having כל means not only accepting what you don't have, it means accepting what you *do* have. >If Abraham were truly blessed with everything, in the sense of “having it all,” there would be nothing left for him to do or seek. Whatever *everything* means, it can’t be exhaustive. Here it means quite literally, *everything*: {:he} >וירא אלקים את *כל* אשר עשה והנה טוב מאד; ויהי ערב ויהי בקר יום הששי׃ --בראשית א:לא The midrash says that this כל, that ה׳ saw was טוב מאד, wasn't what we would call Good: {:he} >רַבִּי נַחְמָן בַּר שְׁמוּאֵל בַּר נַחְמָן בְּשֵׁם רַב שְׁמוּאֵל בַּר נַחְמָן אָמַר: הִנֵּה טוֹב מְאֹד, זֶה יֵצֶר טוֹב. וְהִנֵּה טוֹב מְאֹד, זֶה יֵצֶר רָע... > אָמַר רַב הוּנָא: הִנֵּה טוֹב מְאֹד, זוֹ מִדַּת הַטּוֹב. וְהִנֵּה טוֹב מְאֹד, זוֹ מִדַּת יִסּוּרִין... > --בראשית רבה ט:ז-יג And we allude to this every day in our davening: {:he} >ברוך אתה ה׳ אלקינו מלך העולם יוצר אור ובורא חשך עשה שלום ובורא *את הכל*. --תפילת שחרית, ברכות לפני קריאת שמע בורא את הכל is a euphemism: {:he} >יוצר אור ובורא חשך עשה שלום ובורא *רע*; אני ה׳ עשה *כל* אלה׃ --ישעיהו מה:ז {:he} >״עשה שלום ובורא רע״, מי קא אמרינן כדכתיב?! אלא כתיב ”רע“, וקרינן ”הכל“ לישנא מעליא. --ברכות יא,ב כל has to include רע as well as שלום. Atkins points out that Avraham gave his כל to Yitzchak: {:he} ><b>ה</b> ויתן אברהם את *כל* אשר לו ליצחק׃ <b>ו</b> ולבני הפילגשים אשר לאברהם נתן אברהם מתנת; וישלחם מעל יצחק בנו בעודנו חי קדמה אל ארץ קדם׃ --בראשית פרק כה But כל is not a מתנה, not a gift. It's a responsibility. >The *everything* that Abraham gives Isaac includes some burdens, including that of being the child of a founder who often put mission over family. For Abraham’s children by concubinage, the legacy of this great man was only positive. Since they knew Abraham more as a persona, only at a distance, their inheritance included only “gifts”: they lacked the difficult intimacy Isaac had with his father. They were deprived and spared the complexity included in *everything*. --Zohar Atkins, [_To Everything (Turn, Turn, Turn)_](https://etzhasadeh.substack.com/p/to-everything-turn-turn-turn) To be blessed with בַּכֹּל מִכֹּל כֹּל is not only to be שמח בחלקו but to accept that יסורין and פרענות are part of טוב מאד, part of the infinite complexity that makes us human. It may not be a מתנה, but it is a ברכה. Totality means we can know and objectify it, infinity means we can’t. The laws of nature are a totality. Our encounter with a human face reveals infinity. G-d blessed Abraham with infinity, an appreciation for the uniqueness of his life and every human life. Abraham did not have everything in any objective sense; he didn’t need it. It means a life that is fraught with complexity, and with the infinite potential for growth. And that is what Moshe is saying in the תוכחה. In ארץ ישראל, in a state of גאולה, you had רב כל, so much potential, even with all the negatives. In גלות, we lose the connection with each other and with the complexity that made us complete.
