After Jacob comes back home to Isaac, before we continue on with the story of Jacob and Joseph, we have an extra perek of genealogy (it's the bane of every בעל קורא in this parasha. The תיקון סימנים, which usually has mnemonics to help reading, just says "be careful out there"). <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> ואלה תלדות עשו הוא אדום׃ <b>ב</b> עשו לקח את נשיו מבנות כנען; את עדה בת אילון החתי ואת אהליבמה בת ענה בת צבעון החוי׃ <b>ג</b> ואת בשמת בת ישמעאל אחות נביות׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק לו</footer></blockquote> This is 43 psukim of תלדות עשו. For comparison, we have only have 5 psukim of נחור's family (בראשית כב), and that is to tell us about רבקה's birth, so it connects to the narrative of בני ישראל. We have 7 psukim of תולדות ישמאל (בראשית כה), and the gemara (מגילה יז,א) says that even that is only to tell us of the details of עשו's marriage to his daughter. In other words, תולדות ישמאל is really part of תלדות עשו. And we have one paragraph here of the genealogy of אלה בני שעיר החרי ישבי הארץ, one of the branches of the כנענים. But that's also part of תלדות עשו: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>כ</b> אלה בני שעיר החרי ישבי הארץ; לוטן ושובל וצבעון וענה׃ ...<b>כה</b> ואלה בני ענה דשן; ואהליבמה בת ענה׃ </p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק לו</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>ויהיו בני לוטן חרי והימם; ואחות לוטן תמנע׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית לו:כב</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>ותמנע היתה פילגש לאליפז בן עשו ותלד לאליפז את עמלק; אלה בני עדה אשת עשו׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית לו:יב</footer></blockquote> So Esav and his descendants intermarried with the local populace. Why do I care? The Zohar (as mentioned in the Artscroll Chumash) reads all this as symbolic and kabbalistic, but I'm going to try to look at the פשט. <hr/> The third paragraph starts with a problem: <blockquote lang=he><p>ואלה המלכים אשר מלכו בארץ אדום לפני מלך מלך לבני ישראל׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית לו:לא</footer></blockquote> What does לפני מלך מלך לבני ישראל mean? When the Torah was written, there was no king in Israel! Most מפרשים assume Moshe is talking about himself; מלך is figurative: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>לפני מלך מלך</em>: לפני משה שהושיע את ישראל. </p> <footer class=source>רשב״ם, בראשית לו:לא</footer></blockquote> Ibn Ezra allows for the possibility of a prophetic view of the future (though this seems suspiciously specific for a נבואה), and adds an argument against a proto-Documentary Hypothesis explanation: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>ואלה המלכים</em>: י״א כי בדרך נבואה נכתבה זאת הפרשה.</p> <p> ויצחקי אמר בספרו, כי בימי יהושפט נכתבה זאת הפרשה, ופירש הדורות כרצונו. הכי קרא שמו יצחק, כל השומע יצחק לו...וחלילה חלילה שהדבר כמו שדבר על ימי יהושפט, וספרו ראוי להשרף...</p> <p>והאמת שפירוש לפני מלך מלך על משה מלך ישראל, וכן כתוב (דברים לג:ה) וַיְהִי בִישֻׁרוּן מֶלֶךְ. </p> <footer class=source>אבן עזרא, בראשית לו:לא</footer></blockquote> Rav Shimon Schwab has an interesting explanation. First he notes that the list of kings and then the list of "chieftains", אלופים, seems to be sequential: first there were kings in Edom, then tribes: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>לט</b> וימת בעל חנן בן עכבור וימלך תחתיו הדר ושם עירו פעו; ושם אשתו מהיטבאל בת מטרד בת מי זהב׃ <b>מ</b> ואלה שמות אלופי עשו למשפחתם למקמתם בשמתם; אלוף תמנע אלוף עלוה אלוף יתת׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק לו</footer></blockquote> And that sequence is explicit in the version in דברי הימים: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>נ</b> וימת בעל חנן וימלך תחתיו הדד ושם עירו פעי; ושם אשתו מהיטבאל בת מטרד בת מי זהב׃ <b>נא</b> וימת הדד; <br/> ויהיו אלופי אדום אלוף תמנע אלוף עליה (עלוה) אלוף יתת׃</p> <footer class=source>דברי הימים א פרק א</footer></blockquote> And there seems to be a change within the chronology of the Torah itself. At קריעת ים סוף, there were אלופי אדום: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יד</b> שמעו עמים ירגזון; חיל אחז ישבי פלשת׃ <b>טו</b> אז נבהלו <em>אלופי אדום</em> אילי מואב יאחזמו רעד; נמגו כל ישבי כנען׃ </p> <footer class=source>שמות פרק טו</footer></blockquote> But 40 years later, when בני ישראל approach Edom, there is a king: <blockquote lang=he><p>וישלח משה מלאכים מקדש אל מלך אדום; כה אמר אחיך ישראל אתה ידעת את כל התלאה אשר מצאתנו׃</p> <footer class=source>במדבר כ:יד</footer></blockquote> So Rav Schwab says that Edom only had an ad-hoc king: <blockquote lang=he><p>לפי פשוטו של מקרא מלכו אלו המלכים במשך השנים שהיו ישראל במצרים, אבל אח״כ נתבטלה מלכותם עד שבאו ישראל לקדש אשר בקצה ארץ אדום...כשבאו בני ישראל סמוך לגבול אדום מינן אז בני אדום מלך כדי להלחם בישראל. וזה ”לפני מלוך מלך“ שאלו המלכים מלכו קודם שמינו בני אדום מלך ”לבני ישראל“ פי׳ לצורך בני ישראל כלומר אשר ילך לפניהם להלחם בישראל.</p> <footer class=source>הרב שמעון שווב, מעין בית השואבה, וישלך לו:לא</footer></blockquote> In the entire list there is no מלך בן מלך. Edom only had what we will later in תנ״ך call שופטים. This is parallel to the way Rashi describes the appointment of Balak as king of Moab: <blockquote lang=he><p>ויאמר מואב אל זקני מדין עתה ילחכו הקהל את כל סביבתינו כלחך השור את ירק השדה; ובלק בן צפור <em>מלך למואב בעת ההוא</em>׃</p> <footer class=source>במדבר כב:ד</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>בעת ההוא</em>: לֹא הָיָה רָאוּי לְמַלְכוּת, מִנְּסִיכֵי מִדְיָן הָיָה, וְכֵיוָן שֶׁמֵּת סִיחוֹן מִנּוּהוּ עֲלֵיהֶם לְצֹרֶךְ שָׁעָה.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, שם</footer></blockquote> <hr/> But I want to give this a little different twist. First, there is a short narrative in the middle of all the genealogy: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ו</b> ויקח עשו את נשיו ואת בניו ואת בנתיו ואת כל נפשות ביתו ואת מקנהו ואת כל בהמתו ואת כל קנינו אשר רכש בארץ כנען; וילך אל ארץ מפני יעקב אחיו׃ <b>ז</b> כי היה רכושם רב משבת יחדו; ולא יכלה ארץ מגוריהם לשאת אתם מפני מקניהם׃ <b>ח</b> וישב עשו בהר שעיר עשו הוא אדום׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק לו</footer></blockquote> After Isaac dies, Yaakov and Esav live together peacefully for a while (Esav wanted to kill Yaakov not for stealing the ברכה, but for the stuff that the ברכה promised: מטל השמים ומשמני הארץ ורב דגן ותירש. As long as Esav is rich, Esav is happy.) Then it gets crowded, and Esav moves to Seir. But it looks like he was already living in Seir: <blockquote lang=he><p>וישלח יעקב מלאכים לפניו אל עשו אחיו ארצה שעיר שדה אדום׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית לב:ד</footer></blockquote> It seems that before, Esav was just working in Seir (with his father-in-law!) and commuting from Hebron, but after Yaakov comes he actually moves: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>וילך אל ארץ</em>:...הרי בתחלת הפרשה כתוב ”ארצה שעיר שדה אדום“ אלמא שאפילו קודם ביאת יעקב היתה דירת עשו בארץ שעיר; אלא יש לומר בתחלה היה דר כאן וכאן ומשבא יעקב הלך לו מכל וכל מארץ כנען לארץ שעיר.</p> <footer class=source>חזקוני, בראשית לו:ו</footer></blockquote> Esav actually takes over the entire land, as we see in Moshe's description of the confrontation with Edom: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ב</b> ויאמר ה׳ אלי לאמר׃ <b>ג</b> רב לכם סב את ההר הזה; פנו לכם צפנה׃ <b>ד</b> ואת העם צו לאמר אתם עברים בגבול אחיכם בני עשו הישבים בשעיר; וייראו מכם ונשמרתם מאד׃ <b>ה</b> אל תתגרו בם כי לא אתן לכם מארצם עד מדרך כף רגל; כי ירשה לעשו נתתי את הר שעיר׃ </p> ... <p><b>יב</b> ובשעיר ישבו החרים לפנים ובני עשו יירשום וישמידום מפניהם וישבו תחתם; כאשר עשה ישראל לארץ ירשתו אשר נתן ה׳ להם׃</p> <footer class=source>דברים פרק ב</footer></blockquote> So why does he move? It doesn't seem like a very Esav-y thing, to say "רכושם רב משבת יחדו, so I'll just leave". The midrash explains the backstory: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>ילך אל ארץ מפני יעקב אחיו</em>: ר׳ אליעזר אמר מפני שטר חוב (בראשית טו:יג) כִּי גֵר יִהְיֶה זַרְעֲךָ. ר׳ יהושע בן לוי אמר מפני הבושה. </p> <footer class=source>בראשית רבה (וילנא) פרשת וישלח פרשה פב סימן יג</footer></blockquote> And Rashi expands: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>ולא יכלה ארץ מגוריהם</em>: להספיק מרעה לבהמות שלהם.</p> <p> ומדרש אגדה (פסוק ו) מפני יעקב אחיו, מפני שטר חוב של גזירת (בראשית טו:יג) כִּי גֵר יִהְיֶה זַרְעֲךָ, המוטל על זרעו של יצחק, אמר אלך לי מכאן, אין לי חלק לא במתנה שנתנה לו הארץ הזאת, ולא בפרעון השטר. ומפניו הבושה, שמכר בכורתו.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, בראשית לו:ז</footer></blockquote> I would argue that הבושה שמכר בכורתו is not that he was embarrassed that he had sold the birthright for a mess of pottage. The בושה is that he continued to sell the birthright: <blockquote lang=he><p> <b>ד</b> ויעברו ימי בכיתו וידבר יוסף אל בית פרעה לאמר; אם נא מצאתי חן בעיניכם דברו נא באזני פרעה לאמר׃ <b>ה</b> אבי השביעני לאמר הנה אנכי מת בקברי אשר כריתי לי בארץ כנען שמה תקברני; ועתה אעלה נא ואקברה את אבי ואשובה׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק נ</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>אשר כריתי לי</em>: כפשוטו כמו (שמות כא:לג) כי יכרה איש...ועוד מדרשו לשון כרי, ”דגור“, שנטל יעקב כל כסף וזהב שהביא מבית לבן ועשה אותו כרי, ואמר לעשו טול זה בשביל חלקך במערה.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, בראשית נ:ה</footer></blockquote> And I think this story here is the real sale of the בכורה. What they did when they were 15-year-old kids was just foreshadowing. It indicated Esav's attitude to the mission of Abraham: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>לא</b> ויאמר יעקב; מכרה כיום את בכרתך לי׃ <b>לב</b> ויאמר עשו הנה אנכי הולך למות; ולמה זה לי בכרה׃ <b>לג</b> ויאמר יעקב השבעה לי כיום וישבע לו; וימכר את בכרתו ליעקב׃ <b>לד</b> ויעקב נתן לעשו לחם ונזיד עדשים ויאכל וישת ויקם וילך; ויבז עשו את הבכרה׃ </p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק כה</footer></blockquote> Here Esav demonstrates what ויבז עשו את הבכרה really means. He doesn't want the land, the future, the mission. The price is too high. He would rather be an ordinary nation, intermarrying with everyone around him, with ordinary politics and an ordinary destiny. <hr/> And I think that is why this chapter is in the Torah. Moshe is leading a people who have not had an "ordinary" history; לפני מלך מלך לבני ישראל means "even now, as you are on the cusp of entering ארץ ישראל, you don't have a מלך or a ממלכה. But you want one:" <blockquote lang=he><p>כי תבא אל הארץ אשר ה׳ אלקיך נתן לך וירשתה וישבתה בה; ואמרת אשימה עלי מלך <em>ככל הגוים אשר סביבתי</em>׃</p> <footer class=source>דברים יז:יד</footer></blockquote> So Moshe is telling them: You want to know what מדינת ישראל looks like without the ברית אברהם? An ordinary country, with an ordinary history? Look at your twin brother, the nation of Edom. You go that route, you end up being just 43 sentences in someone else's book: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> ואלה תלדות עשו הוא אדום׃</p> ... <p><b>מג</b> אלוף מגדיאל אלוף עירם; אלה אלופי אדום למשבתם בארץ אחזתם הוא עשו אבי אדום׃ </p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק לו</footer></blockquote> You'll get a paragraph in Wikipedia. <blockquote lang=en><p>Edom...was an ancient kingdom in Transjordan located between Moab to the northeast, the Arabah to the west and the Arabian Desert to the south and east.
