This parasha starts the adventures of Joseph and his brothers. And it starts with an odd incident: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יד</b> ויאמר לו לך נא ראה את שלום אחיך ואת שלום הצאן והשבני דבר; וישלחהו מעמק חברון ויבא שכמה׃ <b>טו</b> וימצאהו איש והנה תעה בשדה; וישאלהו האיש לאמר מה תבקש׃ <b>טז</b> ויאמר את אחי אנכי מבקש; הגידה נא לי איפה הם רעים׃ <b>יז</b> ויאמר האיש נסעו מזה כי שמעתי אמרים נלכה דתינה; וילך יוסף אחר אחיו וימצאם בדתן׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק לז</footer></blockquote> A mysterious stranger meets Joseph on the way. Ibn Ezra feels obligated to state the obvious: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>וימצאהו איש</em>: דרך הפשט אחד מעוברי דרך.</p> <footer class=source>אבן עזרא, בראשית וישב לז:טו </footer></blockquote> Because אין המקרא הזה אומר אלא דרשני. Rashi gives the דרש interpretation: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>וימצאהו איש</em>: זה גבריאל [שנאמר (דניאל ט כא) והאיש גבריאל]. </p> <footer class=source>רש״י, בראשית וישב לז:טו </footer></blockquote> Based on the Targum: <blockquote lang=he><p>וְאַשְׁכְּחֵיהּ גַבְרִיאֵל בִּדְמוּת גַבְרָא וְהָא טָעֵי בְחַקְלָא וְשַׁאֲלֵיהּ גַבְרָא לְמֵימָר מָה אַנְתְּ בָּעֵי׃ </p> <footer class=source>תרגום יונתן, בראשית וישב לז:טו </footer></blockquote> And Maharal explains this in a literary sense. Why tell us the story at all, if there is nothing important about this איש? <blockquote lang=he><p>דעל כרחך מלאך, דאם לא כן למה צריך כל הסיפור...אלא שהשם יתברך שלח מלאך להגיעו אל אחיו ואם לא כן, לא הלך אל אחיו אלא היה חוזר משכם לביתו.</p> <footer class=source>מהר״ל, גור אריה, שם</footer></blockquote> Rashbam, on the other hand, does see some importance to the story even without invoking "angels": <blockquote lang=he><p>להגיד חשיבותו של יוסף נכתב זה שלא רצה לחזור לאביו כשלא מצאם בשכם אלא בקשם עד שמצאם, ואעפ״י שהיה יודע שמתקנאים בו הלך ובקשם כמו שאמר לו אביו והשיבני דבר.</p> <footer class=source>רשב״ם, בראשית וישב לז:טו</footer></blockquote> <hr/> But still, the wording about this איש reminds us of another איש from last week: <blockquote lang=he><p>ויותר יעקב לבדו; ויאבק איש עמו עד עלות השחר׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית לב:כה</footer></blockquote> Rav Soloveitchik (brought down in <a href="https://www.ou.org/oupress/product/darosh-darash-yosef/">Rabbi David's <cite>Darosh Darash Yosef</cite></a>, and in <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Vision-Leadership-Meotzar-Joseph-Soloveitchik/dp/160280219X"><cite>Vision and Leadership</cite></a>) connects these to another mysterious איש: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>כט</b> ויבאו אל יעקב אביהם ארצה כנען; ויגידו לו את כל הקרת אתם לאמר׃ <b>ל</b> דבר האיש אדני הארץ אתנו קשות; ויתן אתנו כמרגלים את הארץ׃ <b>לא</b> ונאמר אליו כנים אנחנו; לא היינו מרגלים׃ <b>לב</b> שנים עשר אנחנו אחים בני אבינו; האחד איננו והקטן היום את אבינו בארץ כנען׃ <b>לג</b> ויאמר אלינו האיש אדני הארץ בזאת אדע כי כנים אתם; אחיכם האחד הניחו אתי ואת רעבון בתיכם קחו ולכו׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית פרק מב</footer></blockquote> In each case, there's an anonymous character who comes out of nowhere and changes the course of the story. Rav Soloveitchik sees this איש as mentioned in תנ״ך as the manifestation of G-d's hand in history. We usually go through life as though everything is arbitrary, by chance, but sometimes there comes a reminder that ה׳ is in charge. It's not an overt miracle, but a coincidence that tells us that life has a plot, a purpose. It's important to note that this איש is not necessarily and "angel", even if it is a מלאך, a "divine messenger". The איש of next week's parasha is very much flesh and blood; he's יוסף their brother: <blockquote lang=he><p>ועתה אל תעצבו ואל יחר בעיניכם כי מכרתם אתי הנה; כי למחיה <em>שלחני אלקים</em> לפניכם׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית מה:ה</footer></blockquote> And Rashi also sees this story as the hand of G-d in history: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>מעמק חברון</em>: והלא חברון בהר, שנאמר (במדבר יג כב) ויעלו בנגב ויבא עד חברון, אלא מעצה עמוקה של [אותו] צדיק הקבור בחברון, לקיים מה שנאמר לאברהם בין הבתרים (לעיל טו יג) כי גר יהיה זרעך</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, בראשית לז:יד</footer></blockquote> <hr/> But what about naming this מלאך,‎ גבריאל? The name comes from דניאל: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>טו</b> ויהי בראתי אני דניאל את החזון; ואבקשה בינה והנה עמד לנגדי כמראה גבר׃ <b>טז</b> ואשמע קול אדם בין אולי; ויקרא ויאמר גבריאל הבן להלז את המראה׃ <b>יז</b> ויבא אצל עמדי ובבאו נבעתי ואפלה על פני; ויאמר אלי הבן בן אדם כי לעת קץ החזון׃</p> <footer class=source>דנייאל פרק ח</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>כא</b> וְעוֹד אֲנִי מְדַבֵּר בַּתְּפִלָּה; וְהָאִישׁ גַּבְרִיאֵל אֲשֶׁר רָאִיתִי בֶחָזוֹן בַּתְּחִלָּה מֻעָף בִּיעָף נֹגֵעַ אֵלַי כְּעֵת מִנְחַת עָרֶב׃ <b>כב</b> וַיָּבֶן וַיְדַבֵּר עִמִּי; וַיֹּאמַר דָּנִיֵּאל עַתָּה יָצָאתִי לְהַשְׂכִּילְךָ בִינָה׃</p> <footer class=source>דנייאל פרק ט</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>נקרא גבריאל מלשון גברא וגבר הוא איש.</p> <footer class=source>מהר״ל, גור אריה, בראשית וישב לז:טו</footer></blockquote> Daniel has just seen the vision of the four beasts, and גבריאל is the one who explains that this is a vision of history, of a succession of empires that will exile the Jews. גבריאל here is the name of the "guardian angel of history", and in the midrash is the one who intervenes in human affairs: <blockquote lang=he><p>עדות ביהוסף שמו בצאתו על ארץ מצרים; שפת לא ידעתי אשמע׃</p> <footer class=source>תהילים פרק פא:ו</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>א״ר חייא בר אבא אמר רבי יוחנן, בשעה שאמר לו פרעה ליוסף: ובלעדיך לא ירים איש את ידו וגו׳ אמרו איצטגניני פרעה: עבד שלקחו רבו בעשרים כסף תמשילהו עלינו? אמר להן: גנוני מלכות אני רואה בו: אמרו לו: א״כ, יהא יודע בשבעים לשון! בא גבריאל ולימדו שבעים לשון, לא הוה קגמר, הוסיף לו אות אחת משמו של הקדוש ברוך הוא ולמד, שנאמר: עדות ביהוסף שמו בצאתו על ארץ מצרים (שפת לא ידעתי אשמע). ולמחר, כל לישנא דאישתעי פרעה בהדיה אהדר ליה. </p> <footer class=source>סוטה דף לו,ב </footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>אבל גבריאל מינוי שלו על כל לשון...ומפני שהוא ממונה על הלשון הוא מכיר ע׳ לשון.</p> <footer class=source>מהר״ל, חדושי אגדות סוטה לג</footer></blockquote> It's important to note that the idea of naming angels was taken from Babylonian/Persian culture: <blockquote lang=he><p>א״ר חנינא שמות חדשים עלו מבבל, ריש לקיש אמר <em>אף שמות מלאכים</em> מיכאל רפאל וגבריאל.</p> <footer class=source>בראשית רבה (וילנא) פרשת וירא פרשה מח סימן ט </footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>דלפי האמת אין להם שמות וכדכתיב ”למה זה תשאל לשמי“.</p> <footer class=source>עץ יוסף, שם</footer></blockquote> A מאלך, in the sense of a "spiritual incorporeal intelligence, acting to manifest G-d's will in the world", doesn't have a "name"; there's no continuous existence there. We see continuity in common patterns, and we (as human beings) want to give it a name, so גבריאל is the "manifestation of ה׳'s hand in history". It's not "real". Notably, the drive to assign names came after גלות בבל, with the loss of spiritual awareness that accompanied the חורבן. We need to visualize הָאִישׁ גַּבְרִיאֵל. <hr/> I want to end with a Chassish vort from the Kotzker: <blockquote lang=en><p> [T]he Malach asked Yosef “What are you looking for?” (Mah t’vakesh?) There is a word in this pasuk that does not fit in — namely the word “leimor” which means literally “to say over to others”. This word is not typically used in direct dialogue between two individuals. The pasuk should read “Vayishaleyhu haIsh, mah tivakesh?” (and the man asked him ‘What are you looking for?’); not “Vayishaleyhu haIsh LEIMOR mah tivakesh?”</p> <p>What does the word LEIMOR here mean? The Kotzker Rebbe answers: Yosef is about to embark on an epic odyssey. In the next several parshiyos, Yosef experiences things that should not happen to any individual. He is going to be accused of murder by his brothers, he is going to be thrown in a pit to die, he is going to be ‘rescued’ and sold to a bunch of merchants, he is going to be transported against his will to Egypt, he will be purchased as a slave only to be accused of trying to seduce his master’s wife, and he will be thrown into jail for an extended period of time. Finally, Yosef will get out of jail and eventually become the viceroy of Egypt...How does a person not give up when must contend with all this trauma?...What is the secret of his strength?</p> <p>The Kotzker Rebbe explains that the Angel was telling him: “Yosef, I will give you the key. The secret is always to keep your mind on one thing: Mah Tevakesh? [What are you looking for?]”. You should constantly keep asking yourself “What is my goal?” When a person is focused on a goal, he can contend with the vagaries that life throws at him. He knows “I have a mission to accomplish and I will not let anything get in my way.” When a person has a clear understanding of “Mah Tevakesh?” then he can be tried with all these tests, all these ‘ups’, but mostly ‘downs’ in life and can remain true to his principles because he knows what his goals are.</p> <p>This is what LEIMOR means here. It does not mean to say it over to anyone else, it means keep saying it over to yourself! Say it over and over again. Every time you find yourself confronting a test, a challenge, ask “Mah Tevakesh?” [What is my goal?] This prevents you from giving up, it prevents you from being seduced, and it keeps you honest.</p> <footer class=source><a href="http://torah.org/torah-portion/ravfrand-5774-vayeishev/">Rabbi Yissocher Frand, <cite>Two Factors Which Allowed Yosef To Survive His Ordeal</cite></a></footer></blockquote> And that's the message we need from seeing G-d's hand in history.
