This week's parsha describes how בני ישראל are going to mess things up:

שערום is from שעיר, with the sense of "hair-raising".

><em>לא שערום אבתיכם</em>: לא יראו מהם; לא עמדה שערתם מפניהם, דרך שערות האדם לעמד מחמת יראה, כך נדרש בספרי.

שערה is the עבודה זרה equivalent of יראת ה׳. It's bad enough to fear pagan gods, but even worse to make up your own.
שערום is also connected to the שדים לא אלה above.

שדים, demons, are called מזיקים, literally things-that-cause-damage, in the gemara. They may be
לא אלה, but people served them anyway.

But ה׳ protects us:

This seems very superstitious and primitive, but we actually believe that this is literally true:
>Were the myriad mazikin that constantly surround us visible to us, says Abba Binyamin (Berachos 6a), we would be frozen in terror. Whether he had in mind the fungi, protozoa, bacteria and viruses that regularly seek to invade our bodies must remain speculation. But, regarding the countless organisms that would, were it not for our immune systems, do us great harm, the statement would have been entirely true.

Rabbi Slifkin, of the Rationalist Judaism website, is bothered by this statement:
Personally, I think that "wishful thinking" would be a better description than "speculation." It is, frankly, rather odd to posit that Chazal knew about such microscopic phenomena. First of all, considering how many very basic things about the natural world they did not know, such as the sun's path at night, why on earth would they have known about microscopic phenomena? Second, if they did indeed know about bacteria and viruses, then why on earth didn't they issue basic medical advice which would have saved countless lives over history, instead of all kinds of bizarre potions and procedures?

But I think he is taking Rabbi Shafran too literally. I don't think חז״ל envisioned gram negative rods producing endotoxins that stimulate cytokine release and the systemic inflammatory response syndrome. This idea, that all around us are things we can't see that are out to get us, is common and universal. Rabbi Shafran cites an example in ספר במדבר:

>ועוד שנענשו בעונש זה, כי הנחשים האלו שנענשו בהם היו הנחשים עצמן שהיו במדבר למינין הרבה, הוא שכתוב (דברים ח:טו) הַמּוֹלִיכֲךָ בַּמִּדְבָּר הַגָּדֹל וְהַנּוֹרָא נָחָשׁ שָׂרָף וְעַקְרָב וְצִמָּאוֹן אֲשֶׁר אֵין מָיִם, וכל ארבעים שנה לא נזוק בהם אחד מישראל.

>שָׁלַח in the /Kal/ means "to send", "to put something in motion towards a goal". But שַׁלֵּחַ in /Piel/...has the meaning of letting something go...not to hold it back...Here, too, not “G-d *sent* serpents” but "let them go"...Hence not נְחָשִׁים שְׂרָפִים but הַנְּחָשִׁים הַשְּׂרָפִים; they had always been there in the wilderness but hitherto they had been kept back by G-d's careful protecting Power. Now G-d withdraws this restraining power, and the serpents of the wilderness follow their natural traits to which the people succumbed.

שדים and שעירם are those myriad invisible harmful forces that we have no control over. They're real, no question. But they have no independent decision-making power. There's no point to serving them, worshipping them: שדים לא אלה. Fight them with science and with תפילה to the One who *can* help.

But יום כיפור is coming, and the שעירים pop up again.

So what is
And 33 psukim from שני השעירם...גורל אחד לה׳ וגורל אחד לעזאזל? It's יזבחו עוד את זבחיהם לשעירם. Ibn Ezra and Ramban are saying that they are connected.
Don't ever sacrifice to the שעירים but put your sins on this שעיר and send it out to join the other שעירים. It's very strange.
But that's the message. שעירים are real, and dangerous. But they are external to who you are, and are not divine powers that need to worshipped or feared.
Your עונות are the same. They are not who you are. They are external, real, but not to be שעיר'ed. The real *you* is a good person. That's what תשובה means, returning to who you really are. Don't trust the vampire:

R' Tzadok of Lublin makes that point:
