After קין is punished, he starts a family: {:he} >יז וידע קין את אשתו ותהר ותלד את חנוך; ויהי בנה עיר ויקרא שם העיר כשם בנו חנוך׃... --אבן עזרא, בראשית ד:כב The wording of לטש כל חרש is odd, and Ramban reverses the last two words. --רמב״ן, בראשית ד:כב But Onkelos says that לטש, sharpening, actually refers to the כל חרש נחשת וברזל. He sharpened the blacksmiths; he started the East of Eden School of Engineering. ---- But that's not what I want to talk about. I want to talk about the apparently superfluous end of that pasuk, All of the people in this week's parsha had lots of kids, the phrase ויולד בנים ובנות comes up again and again. Why mention a name that has no narrative attached? The Zohar (of all places) brings a פשט reading that we miss because we are so androcentric. >A father and his son are in a car accident. The father dies. The son is rushed to the ER. The attending surgeon looks at the boy and says, “I can't operate on this boy. He's my son!” > How can this be? > [In a 2012 study, c]onsistent with the anecdotal evidence, only 18.9% of participants exposed to the classic riddle offered a mother response, suggesting that the surgeon = male stereotype is widely held. --Kirsten N. Morehouse, Benedek Kurdi, Ece Hakim, Mahzarin R. Banaji, [_When a Stereotype Dumbfounds: Probing the Nature of the Surgeon = Male Belief_](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2666622722000119) {:he} >--זוהר חדש, פרשת בראשית תתל״ט, דף יט,ב ר' אבהו אמר: פשוטו של מקרא מורה, על שהיתה חכמה במלאכת הברזל, כמו אחיה תובל קין. But the aggadah abhors a vacuum, and if we have a name without a role, and a role without a name, we have to put them together. Rashi's source is the Midrash Rabbah: {:he} >ואחות תובל קין נעמה: אמר רבי אבא בר כהנא: נעמה אשתו של נח היתה, למה היו קורין אותה נעמה? And this idea, that she was אשת נח, works with the פשט above as well; Mrs. Noach brought the technological expertise of the antediluvian world onto the תבה. But there is another aggadic reading. The Zohar has even more extreme readings: {:he} >רבי בא אמר: אמן של שדים היתה, והולידה אותם. So we have two very different aggadic approaches to ואחות תובל קין נעמה, one calling her a צדקת worthy of נח and preserving her great-great-grandfather's line, and the other calling her the mother of all evil. Now, we take aggadah seriously but not literally, so what do we do with this? ---- Rabbi Shulman likes to point out that the aggadah often pulls narratives from one part of תנ״ך into the lives of other characters, to set up a comparison or contrast between them. The classic example is Avraham being thrown into the furnace: {:he} >אמר ליה מלין את משתעי, אני איני משתחוה אלא לאור; הרי אני משליכך בתוכו, ויבוא אלו־ה שאתה משתחוה לו ויצילך הימנו... That comes from Daniel's friends: {:he} >יט באדין נבוכדנצר התמלי חמא וצלם אנפוהי אשתני על שדרך מישך ועבד נגו; ענה ואמר למזא לאתונא חד שבעה על די חזה למזיה׃ כ ולגברין גברי חיל די בחילה אמר לכפתה לשדרך מישך ועבד נגו למרמא לאתון נורא יקדתא׃... Here, we note that the form of the expression ואחות תובל קין נעמה is repeated later, in a way that demands explanation: {:he} >כ אלה בני שעיר החרי ישבי הארץ; לוטן ושובל וצבעון וענה׃ כא ודשון ואצר ודישן; אלה אלופי החרי בני שעיר בארץ אדום׃ כב ויהיו בני לוטן חרי והימם; *ואחות לוטן תמנע*׃ --בראשית פרק לו And here, the Torah gives us the explanation for bringing up this particular sister: {:he} >י אלה שמות בני עשו; אליפז בן עדה אשת עשו רעואל בן בשמת אשת עשו׃ יא ויהיו בני אליפז תימן אומר צפו וגעתם וקנז׃ יב ותמנע היתה פילגש לאליפז בן עשו ותלד לאליפז את עמלק; אלה בני עדה אשת עשו׃ --בראשית פרק לו The aggadah isn't so much telling us about נעמה, mother of demons, but about תמנע, mother of עמלק. But the aggadah also sees תמנע as a צדקת: {:he} >ותמנע היתה פילגש: להודיע גדלתו של אברהם, כמה היו תאבים לדבק בזרעו. --רש"י, בראשית לו:יב And אליפז, her husband, is seen as an ambiguous צדיק, just like נח. --רש"י , בראשית כט:יא ---- So the two sides of the text inform each other and make for a fun textual analysis, but what do we do with that? It leaves us with the question, what happened? How does a (בראשית ו:ט)‎ נח איש צדיק תמים היה בדרתיו; את האלקים התהלך נח and a נעמה,‎ שהיו מעשיה נעימים produce a חם, who violates his father? How does an אליפז,‎ שגדל בחיקו של יצחק and a תמנע, who said הלואי ואהיה פילגש, produce an עמלק? Why do kids go off the derech? I don't know. I don't have an answer. >...I don’t like the assumption that there is a common or specific reason that people leave Orthodox Judaism which implies that without some sort of trauma or disability they would not leave. People leave for tons of reasons. And many people leave for intellectual or social reasons despite charmed childhoods. It’s arrogant to think we can turn every born Orthodox Jew into an adult Orthodox Jew. It just doesn’t work for some people. We have to acknowledge that possibility in any discussion of the topic. > Third of all, because there are completely healthy people who leave Orthodox Judaism, it’s obvious that not all of them are scarred by bad parenting. Most children of bad parents actually don’t leave Orthodox Judaism. Conversely, we all know excellent parents who have children who left Orthodox Judaism. The blame game here is silly and tired. --Rabbi Eliyahu Fink, [_Why Rabbi Kelemen is Mistaken About Kids Leaving Religion_](https://www.ou.org/life/inspiration/why-rabbi-keleman-is-mistaken-about-kids-leaving-religion/) >The Steipler Gaon taught that there are two factors in raising children: fifty percent is Teffilah and fifty percent is Shalom Bayis. --Rav Mordechai Burg, [_Shalom Bayis and Parenting--Ben Sorer U’Moreh Part 2_](https://genaleph.org/articles/shalombayisparentingbsu2/) The aggadah here is telling us something about the reality of parenting.
