This week's parsha is, of course, about numbers: {:he} ><b>א</b> וידבר ה׳ אל משה במדבר סיני באהל מועד; באחד לחדש השני בשנה השנית לצאתם מארץ מצרים לאמר׃ <b>ב</b> שאו את ראש כל עדת בני ישראל למשפחתם לבית אבתם במספר שמות כל זכר לגלגלתם׃ <b>ג</b> מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כל יצא צבא בישראל תפקדו אתם לצבאתם אתה ואהרן׃ --במדבר פרק א {:he} ><b>לב</b> אלה פקודי בני ישראל לבית אבתם; כל פקודי המחנת לצבאתם שש מאות אלף ושלשת אלפים וחמש מאות וחמשים׃ <b>לג</b> והלוים לא התפקדו בתוך בני ישראל; כאשר צוה ה׳ את משה׃ --במדבר פרק ב The army was 603,550 adult men, plus 8,580 adult לויים: {:he} ><b>מו</b> כל הפקדים אשר פקד משה ואהרן ונשיאי ישראל את הלוים; למשפחתם ולבית אבתם׃ <b>מז</b> מבן שלשים שנה ומעלה ועד בן חמשים שנה; כל הבא לעבד עבדת עבדה ועבדת משא באהל מועד׃ <b>מח</b> ויהיו פקדיהם שמנת אלפים וחמש מאות ושמנים׃ --במדבר פרק ד We have talked many times about שאו את ראש meaning "lift up the heads", make them feel important. The census was not to count the people, but to make the people count. {:he} >[במספר שמות:] אין במספר לשון מנין כי אם לשון הגדה, כמו (שופטים ז:טו) וַיְהִי כִשְׁמֹעַ גִּדְעוֹן אֶת מִסְפַּר הַחֲלוֹם, (תהליס קמז:ה) לִתְבוּנָתוֹ אֵין מִסְפָּר, שענינם הוצאת דברים בכלי מטבא, וטעם במספר שמות בהגדת שמות, כל אחד הגיד את שמו.</p> --הכתב והקבלה, במדבר א:יח Today I want to look at this number, 60 myriad. It comes up a lot: {:he} > ויסעו בני ישראל מרעמסס סכתה כשש מאות אלף רגלי הגברים לבד מטף׃ --שמות פרק יב {:he} >ויאמר ה׳ אל משה ואל אלעזר בן אהרן הכהן לאמר׃ <b>ב</b> שאו את ראש כל עדת בני ישראל מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה לבית אבתם; כל יצא צבא בישראל׃...<b>נא</b> אלה פקודי בני ישראל שש מאות אלף ואלף; שבע מאות ושלשים׃ --במדבר פרק כו It's clearly a symbolic number (it doesn't include women or teens); 600,000 has come to mean "all of בני ישראל". The Zohar makes a famous connection: {:he} >עַד דְּסָלְקִין אַתְוָון, לְשִׁתִּין רִבּוֹא, כְּחוּשְׁבַּן שִׁבְטֵיהוֹן דְּיִשְׂרָאֵל, דְּאִינוּן תְּרֵיסַר, וְסָלְקִין לְשִׁתִּין רִבּוֹא. --זוהר חדש, שיר השירים תרנח >The name "ישראל" itself can be viewed as an acronym for the words, "יש ששים רבוא אותיות לתורה." There is a letter in the Torah for each of our names. > While some letters in the Torah are written larger than others, there is no letter that is more significant than any other letter. If any letter is missing or incomplete, the entire Torah is invalid to use. The Jewish nation is one Torah scroll. Everybody counts. Every individual—big or small, scholar or unlearned—is a letter. We are all one, interdependent and equally important. > The Me’or Einayim (Emor), Rav Menachem Nochum of Chernobyl writes that...since there are 600,000 letters in the Torah and there were 600,000 Jews who received Torah at Mount Sinai, we conclude that each Jewish soul has a spiritual connection to one of the Torah’s letters... > Though the Shulchan Aruch records that the proper thing to do during Hagbah, when the Torah is lifted, is to bow, the more prevalent custom is to point. The Arizal wouldn’t just point from a distance, but he would get close to the Torah during Hagbah so that he could see the actual letters. The Mishna Berura (134:11) quotes this and says עי"ז נמשך אור גדול על האדם: this practice draws down a great light upon a person. --Rabbi Efrem Goldberg, [_Find Your Letter in the Torah_](https://rabbiefremgoldberg.org/letterintorah) The Slonimer, Rav Sholom Noach Berezovsky, says that is why we read this parsha before שבועות: {:he} >ונמצא כי המספר ששים רבוא הוא דבר נצחי בעבודת ה', שבכל ענין בעבודת ה' יכלול יהודי עצמו בתוך כללות ישראל, כי הפרט מישראל לבדו אין בו שלימות, ורק הששים רבוא...אותיות שבתורה הם שלימות, וששים רבוא בני ישראל הם שלימות...וזהו ענין נשיאת ראש בני ישראל הכתוב לגבי מנינם של ישראל, שבני ישראל מתרוממים ומתנשאים למדרגותיהם העילאיות רק מכח הכלל ישראל המאוחדים יחד, בהיותם ששים רבוא נשמות ישראל מאוחדים... > וזה...מאמר מרן אדמו"ר בב"א זי"ע, דברוב השנים קורין בתורה פר' במדבר קודם קבה"ת, היות שענינה כללות מספר בני ישראל, ורק על ידי כללות ישראל ניתן לקיים את כל התורה, ואילו יחיד הרי אינו יכול לקיים את כל התורה, דיש מצוות השייכות לזה ויש לזה, ורק בהתאחדות הכלל ישראל ניתן לקיים את כל התורה. ולכך קודם קבלת התורה כתיב (שמות יט:ב) וַיִּחַן שָׁם יִשְׂרָאֵל ודרשו חז"ל ע"ז כאיש אחד בלב אחד, שרק עי"ז שנתאחד כלל ישראל יכולים היו לקבל את התורה... > כיון שהס' רבוא נשמות של כלל ישראל הם כנגד ס' רבוא אותיות התורה, ואם חסר אחד הרי חסר אות בתורה, ע"כ היו צריכים שימנו ששים רבוא בשלימות. --נתיבות שלום, במדבר, ענין מנין בני ישראל ---- It's a very nice thought. The problem is that it's not true. >There are 304,805 letters in a Torah Scroll. --Dovid Zaklikowski, [_Torah Scroll Facts_](https://www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/351655/jewish/Torah-Scroll-Facts.htm) As a symbolic number, I'm fine with it being not literally true, but it should be close! It's such a nice idea, that each of us have our letter in the Torah, that each of us has something to contribute and, simultaneously, none of us are complete without the other, that many answers and ways of counting are suggested. >One [explanation] is given by Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi, the founder of Chabad. The count includes vowel letters that are not included in the text, but are implied in the pronunciation of the word. The implication is idea that some of us have letters that aren't explicit, not in the תורה שבכתב, but are part of the מסורה, part of the תורה שבעל פה. Sometimes where we fit is obvious, sometimes it's not so clear. But there are still not enough letters. The Slonimer connects this to the question of why count the לויים separately? {:he} >ומה שהלויים לא התפקדו בתוך בני ישראל, כי קדושת הלויים היא קדושה גבוהה יותר, שהם בבחי' החלק שבין האותיות, וכדאיתא בספה"ק (עיין קדושת לוי ליקוטים) שהחלק שבין האותיות קדושתו גבוהה יותר מקדושת האותיות, וע"כ לא התפקדו הלויים בתוך בני ישראל, שאינם בבחי' אותיות ואין יכולים להשלים מנין האותיות בתורה. --נתיבות שלום, במדבר, ענין מנין בני ישראל I would understand this as not the space between the letters but the whitespace between the words. The לויים are represented not by the letters themselves but the whitespace. There are [79,847 words in the Torah](https://aish.com/number-of-words-and-letters/), which means 79,846 spaces. So 304,805 + 215,161 + 79,846 is 599,812, which I think is close enough. But what does the whitespace mean? Ramban famously says that the Torah represents the "name" of G-d, and all the possible "names" of G-d: {:he} >עוד יש בידינו קבלה של אמת, כי כל התורה כלה שמותיו של הקב"ה, שהתבות מתחלקות לשמות בענין אחד. כאלו תחשב על דרך משל, כי פסוק בראשית יתחלק לתבות אחרות, כגון: בְּרֹאשׁ יִתְבְּרָא אֱלֹקִים, וכל התורה כן... > ונראה שהתורה הכתובה באש שחורה על גבי אש לבנה, בענין הזה שהזכרנו היה, שהיתה הכתיבה רצופה בלי הפסק תבות, והיה אפשר בקריאתה שתקרא על דרך השמות, ותקרא על דרך קריאתנו בענין התורה והמצוה, ונתנה למשה רבינו על דרך קריאת המצות, ונמסר לו על פה קריאתה בשמות. וכן יכתבו השם הגדול שהזכרתי כלו רצוף, ויתחלק לתבות של שלש שלש אותיות לחלוקים אחרים רבים, כפי השמוש לבעלי הקבלה. --רמב"ן, פתיחה לפירוש התורה The whitespace represents how we turn the Torah into something relevant to our own lives, as a document of history and law, of [nomos and narrative](https://openyls.law.yale.edu/bitstream/handle/20.500.13051/2047/Nomos_and_Narrative.pdf?sequence=2). Those who learn and interpret the Torah are the ones whose "letter" is whitespace. And anyone can be a "Levi" in that sense. {:he} >ולא שבט לוי בלבד אלא כל איש ואיש מכל באי העולם אשר נדבה רוחו אותו והבינו מדעו להבדל לעמד לפני ה' לשרתו ולעבדו לדעה את ה' והלך ישר כמו שעשהו האלקים ופרק מעל צוארו על החשבונות הרבים אשר בקשו בני האדם, הרי זה נתקדש קדש קדשים ויהיה ה' חלקו ונחלתו לעולם ולעולמי עולמים... --משנה תורה, הלכות שמיטה ויובל יג:יג We think of Torah as having two components, תורה שבכתב and תורה שבעל פה. But תורה שבעל פה has two parts, the מסורה of (משנה אבות א:א)‎ משה קבל תורה מסיני, ומסרה ליהושע and the דברי סופרים, the understanding that we bring. {:he} >וכן בתורה תורה שבעל פה יבין שהם הדברים שדברו חכמים לפרש מצות התורה, והמוסרים שאמרו, וכדומה, וכן האגדות והנסתרות שדברו אותם בדרך חדה ולא יבינום כ"א חכמי לב... --מלבי"ם, משלי א:ו We all have our letter in the Torah, be it consonant, vowel or whitespace. and the Torah, to be complete, needs all of us.
