After the battle, Avshalom tries to run away. {:he} > וַיִּקָּרֵא אבשלום לפני עבדי דוד; ואבשלום רכב על הַפֶּרֶד ויבא הפרד תחת שובך האלה הגדולה ויחזק ראשו באלה ויתן בין השמים ובין הארץ והפרד אשר תחתיו עבר׃ --שמואל ב יח:ט A few points: the text says that וַיִּקָּרֵא Avshalom, which is generally translated as "happened": {:he} ><em>ויקרא</em>: מלשון מקרה. --מצודת ציון, שמואל ב יח:ט {:he} >כִּי יִקָּרֵא קַן צִפּוֹר לְפָנֶיךָ בַּדֶּרֶךְ בְּכָל עֵץ אוֹ עַל הָאָרֶץ אֶפְרֹחִים אוֹ בֵיצִים וְהָאֵם רֹבֶצֶת עַל הָאֶפְרֹחִים אוֹ עַל הַבֵּיצִים לֹא תִקַּח הָאֵם עַל הַבָּנִים׃ --דברים כב:ו But וַיִּקָּרֵא literally means "to be invited or summoned". >Coincidence is G-d’s way of remaining anonymous. --[Attributed to Albert Einstein](https://quoteinvestigator.com/2015/04/20/coincidence/) The נביא is telling us that the story as it will unfold is *not* happenstance. It is part of ה׳'s plan for David and Avshalom. {:he} ><em>ויקרא אבשלום וגו'</em>: סִפֵּר הכתוב שקרה המקרה הרע והעונש האלקי סבב שנזדמן אבשלום לפני עבדי דוד אביו. --אברבנאל, שמואל ב יח:ט And he is riding a פרד, a mule. Not just any mule, but הפרד, *the* mule. In תנ״ך, mules are signs of royalty. Ordinary people ride donkeys (horses are weapons of war). >A mule is the offspring of a male donkey (jack) and a female horse (mare). > The mule inherits from its sire the traits of intelligence, sure-footedness, toughness, endurance, disposition, and natural cautiousness. From its dam it inherits speed, conformation, and agility. Mules are reputed to exhibit a higher cognitive intelligence than their parent species. Mules are generally taller at the shoulder than donkeys and have better endurance than horses, although a lower top speed. --Wikipedia, [_Mule_](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mule) {:he} ><b>יד</b> ויהי משקל הזהב אשר בא לשלמה בשנה אחת שש מאות ששים ושש ככר זהב׃ > ...<b>כה</b> והמה מבאים איש מנחתו כלי כסף וכלי זהב ושלמות ונשק ובשמים סוסים ופרדים דבר שנה בשנה׃ --מלכים א פרק י {:he} >ויעשו נערי אבשלום לאמנון כאשר צוה אבשלום; ויקמו כל בני המלך וירכבו איש על פרדו וינסו׃ --שמואל ב יג:כט And this mule, הַפרד, presumably was David's personal animal (David escaped Jerusalem on foot: (שמואל ב טו:יז)‎ ויצא המלך וכל העם ברגליו); Avshalom is demonstrating that he is the king. {:he} ><em>רוכב על הפרד</em>: י"מ שהיה פרד המיוחד למלך דאין שום אחד יכול להשתמש בו דאין משתמשין בשרביטו של מלך והוא רכב עליו להראות שהוא מלך ולכן לקה בו. --חומת אנך, שמואל ב יח:ט And we will see this royal mule later, when Shlomo is officially allowed to ride it: {:he} ><b>לב</b> ויאמר המלך דוד קראו לי לצדוק הכהן ולנתן הנביא ולבניהו בן יהוידע; ויבאו לפני המלך׃ <b>לג</b> ויאמר המלך להם קחו עמכם את עבדי אדניכם והרכבתם את שלמה בני על הפרדה אשר לי; והורדתם אתו אל גחון׃ <b>לד</b> ומשח אתו שם צדוק הכהן ונתן הנביא למלך על ישראל; ותקעתם בשופר ואמרתם יחי המלך שלמה׃ --מלכים א פרק א And then, Avshalom gets stuck in the tree by his head (presumably because of the long hair he is so proud of), and is left hanging, again emphasizing the divine nature of his fate: {:he} ><b>יח</b> כי יהיה לאיש בן סורר ומורה איננו שמע בקול אביו ובקול אמו; ויסרו אתו ולא ישמע אליהם׃... > <b>כב</b> וכי יהיה באיש חטא משפט מות והומת; ותלית אתו על עץ׃ --דברים פרק כא ---- And as he is hanging there, he is found: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>י</b> וירא איש אחד ויגד ליואב; ויאמר הנה ראיתי את אבשלם תלוי באלה׃ <b>יא</b> ויאמר יואב לאיש המגיד לו והנה ראית ומדוע לא הכיתו שם ארצה; ועלי לתת לך עשרה כסף וחגרה אחת׃ <b>יב</b> ויאמר האיש אל יואב ולא (ולוא) אנכי שקל על כפי אלף כסף לא אשלח ידי אל בן המלך; כי באזנינו צוה המלך אתך ואת אבישי ואת אתי לאמר שמרו מי בנער באבשלום׃ <b>יג</b> או עשיתי בנפשו (בנפשי) שקר וכל דבר לא יכחד מן המלך; ואתה תתיצב מנגד׃</p> <footer class=source>שמואל ב פרק יח</footer></blockquote> {:he} ><em>שמרו מי בנער</em>: כל מי שיבא לידו ישמרנו. --רש״י, שמואל ב יח:יב {:he} >וגם אפשר לומר...שדוד רמז, שהוא ירצה לדעת מי הוא ששלח ידו באבשלום, וזה מה שצוה לשים לב ולהתבונן לתת דין וחשבון מי פגע באבשלום. --משבצות זהב, שמואל ב יח:יב And this is a particular worry for this איש אחד in the eyes of the Midrash, as we will see. When the fight is over, the fight is over. {:he} >ויתקע יואב בשופר ויעמדו כל העם ולא ירדפו עוד אחרי ישראל; ולא יספו עוד להלחם׃ --שמואל ב ב:כח And so we will end on a positive note: {:he} >שמהדברים משמע שלא היה דבר פשוט וקל להפסיק ולעצור את המלחמה, ורק ע״י הריגת אבשלום נתפייסו עבדי דוד מלהשחית בעם. ולכן יש מקום לימוד זכות על יואב שהרג את אבשלום כדי להפסיק ולמנוע את המלחמה שהוא החל בה. --משבצות זהב, שמואל ב יח:טז ---- And then Avshalom is ignomiously buried: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יז</b> ויקחו את אבשלום וישלכו אתו ביער אל הפחת הגדול ויצבו עליו גל אבנים גדול מאד; וכל ישראל נסו איש לאהלו׃ <b>יח</b> ואבשלם לקח ויצב לו בחיו את מצבת אשר בעמק המלך כי אמר אין לי בן בעבור הזכיר שמי; ויקרא למצבת על שמו ויקרא לה יד אבשלום עד היום הזה׃ </p> <footer class=source>שמואל ב פרק יח</footer></blockquote> The irony being highlighted here is that Avshalom prepared this glorious monument for himself but his actual grave marker was a pile of rocks on the other side of the Jordan. And there is a problem here: Avshalom *did* have children: {:he} ><b>כה</b> וכאבשלום לא היה איש יפה בכל ישראל להלל מאד; מכף רגלו ועד קדקדו לא היה בו מום׃...<b>כז</b> ויולדו לאבשלום שלושה בנים ובת אחת ושמה תמר; היא היתה אשה יפת מראה׃ --שמואל ב פרק יד {:he} ><em>כי אמר אין לי בן</em>: ולא הוו ליה בני? והכתיב ”ויולדו לאבשלום שלשה בנים ובת אחת“! אמר רב יצחק בר אבדימי: שלא היה לו בן הגון למלכות --סוטה יא,ב I think the לא היה לו בן הגון למלכות was from Avshalom's perspective: the qualification for being king was being tall, strong and beautiful. His daughter would qualify: היא היתה אשה יפת מראה. But in his eyes his sons were failures; they were not יפה מראה and so could not be מלך ישראל. This yet again shows Avshalom's failure, and why David was right to reject him for the מלכות. {:he} >ויאמר ה׳ אל שמואל אל תבט אל מראהו ואל גבה קומתו כי מאסתיהו; כי לא אשר יראה האדם כי האדם יראה לעינים וה׳ יראה ללבב׃ --שמואל א טז:ז ---- David, of course, is still in hiding in Machanayim, so he doesn't know the outcome of the battle. We will deal with that [next time](next). But I want to look at a פרק תהילים that is clearly relevant to Avshalom: {:he} > שקר הסוס לתשועה; וברב חילו לא ימלט׃ ----תהילים לג:יז That perek is familiar to us; we say it in פסוקי דזמרא on שבת: {:he} >רננו צדיקים בה׳; לישרים נאוה תהלה׃ --תהילים לג:א And it is interesting because it apparently does not have a כותרת, an introductory title or attribution. That makes it unusual in תהילים as a whole, and unique in the first book of תהילים: {:he} >בעצם כוונתנו לציין את העובדה שאין ”ראשית“ לפרק, כלומר שאין כתובת לפרק בדומה לאלה שאנו מוצאים ברוב פרקי תהלים--עובדה זו אומרת דרשני... > יהיה פרקנו הפרק ”היתום“ היחידי בספר אי שאין אנו יכולים למצוא סיבה ליתמותו. אמרנו שעובדה זו אומרת דרשני, אולם כיצד נדרוש אותה--אין אנו יודעים. אני עבדכם אין לי כל השערה בנדון זה ואף לא מצאתיה אצל חוקרים ומפרשים אעפי״כ אנו מציינים דבר זה משום שלדעתנו הצגת השאלה היא לעתים במחקר המקרא לא פחות חשובה מאשר מתן תשובה. --פיבל מלצר, <a href=https://www.mosadharavkook.com/shop/פני-ספר-תהלים/ ><cite>פני ספר תהלים</cite></a>, תהילים לג In the case of other perakim without titles (like פרק ב), we have assumed that they are actually not a new psalm, but a continuation of the previous one. And there are similarities between the start of פרק לג and the end of פרק לב: {:he} >שמחו בה׳ וגילו צדיקים; והרנינו כל ישרי לב׃ --תהילים לב:יא But the overall context is very different; פרק לב is about תשובה: <figure lang="he"><blockquote> <p>לדוד משכיל; אשרי נשוי פשע; כסוי חטאה׃</p> </blockquote> <figcaption class="source"><span>תהילים לב:א</span></figcaption> </figure> and our perek is about glorifying ה׳. So I will take a different approach, and say that our perek *does* have a כותרת.‎ רננו is a title (similar to הללו). {:he} >אמר ריב״ל בעשרה מאמרות של שבח נאמר ספר תהלים. --פסחים קיז,ב There are a number of sources with varying lists of what those ten מאמרות של שבח are, but I will go kabbalistic and look at the list in תקוני זהר: {:he} >תְּשִׁיעָאָה בְּרִנָּה וְדָא אִיהוּ רַנֲנוּ צַדִּיקִים בַּיְיָ', וְדָא דַרְגָּא דְצַדִּיק חַ''י עָלְמִין, מִתַּמָּן רִנָּה, וּבֵיהּ פּוּרְקָנָא, הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב (ירמיה כג:ה) צֶמַח צַדִּיק, (זכריה ו:יב) וּמִתַּחְתָּיו יִצְמָח, מִתַּחְתָּיו וַדַּאי, הַהִיא דְאִיהִי עֲשִׂירִית לְכֹלָּא. --תקוני הזהר כט ב:ג, תיקון יג The תקוני זהר associates each מאמר של שבח with one of the ten ספירות, the ways that ה׳ manifests in the world. The "lower seven" take their names from a verse in דברי הימים, from David's prayer dedicating the plans of the בית המקדש: {:he} >לְךָ ה׳ (1) הַגְּדֻלָּה (2) וְהַגְּבוּרָה (3) וְהַתִּפְאֶרֶת (4) וְהַנֵּצַח (5) וְהַהוֹד כִּי (6) כֹל בַּשָּׁמַיִם וּבָאָרֶץ; לְךָ ה׳ (7) הַמַּמְלָכָה וְהַמִּתְנַשֵּׂא לְכֹל לְרֹאשׁ. --דברי הימים א כט:יא As I have said many times before, I do not think David was a kabbalist in the modern sense, but that the kabbalists looked at תהילים and David's other poems for inspiration. ספר תהילים deals with theological concepts and the kabbalists put those into organized, strictly defined terms. The ninth ספירה we call יסוד (see the list in ספירת העומר; it's the sixth of the "lower seven"); in the pasuk above it is כֹל בַּשָּׁמַיִם וּבָאָרֶץ. It is the idea of G-d's immanence, that there is in some sense a spark of the divine in everything that exists. >The doctrine or theory of immanence holds that the divine encompasses or is manifested in the material world. It...suggest[s] that the spiritual world permeates the mundane. It is often contrasted with theories of transcendence, in which the divine is seen to be outside the material world. --Wikipedia, [_Immanence_](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immanence#Judaism) Part of the תקוני זהר's point is that מִתַּחְתָּיו יִצְמָח, that יסוד gives rise to the tenth ספירה,‎ מלכות.‎ ה׳'s rule over the world derives from His creation and ongoing presence in the universe. Ramban discusses this on the pasuk, (בראשית כד:א)‎ וַה׳ בֵּרַךְ אֶת אַבְרָהָם בַּכֹּל: {:he} >ואמרו כי ”בכל“ תרמוז על ענין גדול, והוא שיש להקב״ה מדה תקרא ”כל“, מפני שהיא יסוד הכל, ובה נאמר (ישעיה מד:כד) אנכי ה׳ עושה כל, והוא שנאמר (קהלת ה:ח) וְיִתְרוֹן אֶרֶץ בַּכֹּל הוּא, יאמר כי יתרון הארץ וטובה הגדולה השופע על כל באי עולם בעבור כי בכל היא… > >ומדה אחרת תקרא בת נאצלת ממנה, ובה הוא מנהיג את הכל, והיא בית דינו של הקדוש ברוך הוא הנרמז במלת ”וה׳“ בכל מקום (ב״ר נא:ב)…והיא שחכמים מכנים שמה כנסת ישראל… --רמב״ן, בראשית כד:א This is a difficult concept, one that I can't claim to understand, but is developed in chassidut as "panentheism" (not "pantheism", that nature as a whole *is* G-d, but that the universe exists as an aspect of "the mind of G-d"). {:he} >מכנין שמו של הקב"ה וקוראין אותו ”מקום“, שהוא מקומו של עולם ואין עולמו מקומו. --בראשית רבה סח:ט >Panentheism (meaning "all-in-God", from the Greek πᾶν pân, "all", ἐν en, "in" and Θεός Theós, "God") is the belief that the divine pervades and interpenetrates every part of the universe and also extends beyond space and time. The term was coined by the German philosopher Karl Krause in 1828 to distinguish the ideas of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770–1831) and Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling (1775–1854) about the relation of God and the universe from the supposed pantheism of Baruch Spinoza. The manifestation of the divine in the universe is the holiness that pervades everything. This perek, I think, is saying something different; not so much the metaphysical concept that everything has an element of the divine, but that ה׳'s חסד pervades everything, and that everything is holy because ה׳ created everything. This is relevant to our study of David because יסוד is the source of מלכות. The ספירות are not just divine attributes, they represent human מידות as well. Our purpose in life is {:la}/imitatio Dei/: {:he} >ואַבָּא שָׁאוּל אוֹמֵר: ”וְאַנְוֵהוּ“—הֱוֵי דּוֹמֶה לוֹ, מָה הוּא חַנּוּן וְרַחוּם—אַף אַתָּה הֱיֵה חַנּוּן וְרַחוּם. --שבת קלג,ב This applies not only to חסד and דין, but to מלכות as well. Any authority that we have is an imitation of ה׳'s authority, and as such, it derives from our sense of יסוד, that we are part of the כל, the community. The מלך in that sense is the representative of the people as a whole, not the ruler. מלכות comes from כל. This was Avshalom's mistake. And it goes back to creation: {:he} ><b>ו</b> בדבר ה׳ שמים נעשו; וברוח פיו כל צבאם׃<br/> <b>ז</b> כנס כנד מי הים; נתן באוצרות תהומות׃<br/> <b>ח</b> ייראו מה׳ כל הארץ; ממנו יגורו כל ישבי תבל׃<br/> <b>ט</b> כי הוא אמר ויהי; הוא צוה ויעמד׃ --תהילים פרק לג And that involvement continues throughout history: {:he} ><b>י</b> ה׳ הפיר עצת גוים; הניא מחשבות עמים׃<br/> <b>יא</b> עצת ה׳ לעולם תעמד; מחשבות לבו לדר ודר׃ --תהילים פרק לג {:he} >והנה העצה היא התכלית הנרצה להעושה, והמחשבות הם האמצעיים המובילים אל התכלית. --מלבי״ם, תהילים לג:י {:he} >וע"י שה' מנהיג את הארץ בהשגחה מיוחדת, לכן בענינים הכוללים הרצויים אצלו מצד חכמתו ורצונו יתברך יבטל עצת גוים ומחשבותיהם, וינהיג הכל לפי התכלית הכולל הנרצה אצלו ולא יועילו מחשבות בני אדם ועצתם לבטל את עצת ה' והתכלית המוסכם אצלו. --שם It's interesting (though I don't know what to make of it) that this pair of psukim is parallel, not chiastic.
