There's a well-known Rashi on the first pasuk of this week's parasha: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> ואלה שמות בני ישראל הבאים מצרימה; את יעקב איש וביתו באו׃ <b>ב</b> ראובן שמעון לוי ויהודה׃ <b>ג</b> יששכר זבולן ובנימן׃ <b>ד</b> דן ונפתלי גד ואשר׃</p> <footer class=source>שמות פרק א</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>שְׂאוּ מָרוֹם עֵינֵיכֶם וּרְאוּ מִי בָרָא אֵלֶּה הַמּוֹצִיא בְמִסְפָּר צְבָאָם; לְכֻלָּם בְּשֵׁם יִקְרָא מֵרֹב אוֹנִים וְאַמִּיץ כֹּחַ אִישׁ לֹא נֶעְדָּר׃ </p> <footer class=source>ישעיהו מ:כו</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>אלה שמות בני ישראל</em>: אף על פי שמנאן בחייהן בשמותן, חזר ומנאן במיתתן, להודיע חבתן שנמשלו לכוכבים, שמוציאן ומכניסן במספר ובשמותם, שנאמר (ישעיהו מ:כו) המוציא במספר צבאם לכולם בשם יקרא.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, שמות א:א</footer></blockquote> And we all know why בני ישראל are compared to the stars: <blockquote lang=he><p> ויוצא אתו החוצה ויאמר הבט נא השמימה וספר הכוכבים אם תוכל לספר אתם; ויאמר לו כה יהיה זרעך׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית טו:ה</footer></blockquote> The problem is that this isn't true. At this point in the story, they are not an numerous as the stars. Moshe himself makes this point: <blockquote lang=he><p>בשבעים נפש ירדו אבתיך מצרימה; ועתה שמך ה׳ אלקיך ככוכבי השמים לרב׃</p> <footer class=source>דברים י:כב</footer></blockquote> <hr/> And the pasuk that Rashi (based on שמות רבה) chooses to make his point is odd; there's a much more familiar pasuk: <blockquote lang=he><p>מוֹנֶה מִסְפָּר לַכּוֹכָבִים; לְכֻלָּם שֵׁמוֹת יִקְרָא׃</p> <footer class=source>תהלים קמז:ד</footer></blockquote> The key is that it's not the <em>number</em> of stars that is the basis of the simile, but the <em>names</em>. This is ספר שמות, after all. The message of לְכֻלָּם בְּשֵׁם יִקְרָא is that אִישׁ לֹא נֶעְדָּר, that every individual is important and has their own role and own identity: <blockquote lang=he><p> ואת כל העדה הקהילו באחד לחדש השני ויתילדו על משפחתם לבית אבתם; במספר שמות מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה לגלגלתם׃</p> <footer class=source>במדבר א:יח</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>אין במספר לשון מנין כ״א לשון הגדה, כמו (שופטים ז) וַיְהִי כִשְׁמֹעַ גִּדְעוֹן אֶת מִסְפַּר הַחֲלוֹם, (תהליס קמז) לִתְבוּנָתוֹ אֵין מִסְפָּר, שענינם הוצאת דברים בכלי מטבא, וטעם במספר שמות בהגדת שמות, כל אחד הגיד את שמו.</p> <footer class=source>הכתב והקבלה, שם</footer></blockquote> <hr/> Rav Yaakov Kamenetsky explains that we have the wrong source of the star metaphor that the Midrash brings. It's from the other image of stars in ספר בראשית: <blockquote lang=he><p>ויחלם עוד חלום אחר ויספר אתו לאחיו; ויאמר הנה חלמתי חלום עוד והנה השמש והירח ואחד עשר כוכבים משתחוים לי׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית לז:ט</footer></blockquote> It's not the number, it's the nature of their individuality: <blockquote lang=en><p>Only when it is dark enough, can you see the stars.</p> <footer class=source><a href="https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Martin_Luther_King,_Jr.#I've_Been_to_the_Mountaintop_(1968)">Martin Luther King, Jr., <cite>I've Been to the Mountaintop</cite></a></footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>המליצה בזה, שכל זמן שהיה יעקב אבינו קיים היה כשמש ולא היו בניו ניכרים אז, וכמו שהשמש בשעה שהוא בתוקפו אין הכוכבים נראים, וכיון ששקעה חמה מיד מתחילים הכוכבים נוצצים, וכל כמה שהחשך מתרבה הכוכבים מורגשים ביותר.</p> <footer class=source>אמת ליעקב, שמות א: א</footer></blockquote> Why does that matter? The goal of ספר שמות is to give the Torah to humanity, and that can't happen to an individual, no matter how great: <blockquote lang=he><p>אמר רבי יהושע בן לוי: הני עשרים וששה ”הודו“ כנגד מי? כנגד עשרים וששה דורות שברא הקדוש ברוך הוא בעולמו ולא נתן להם תורה, וזן אותם בחסדו.</p> <footer class=source>פסחים קיח,א</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p>השאלה הזועקת היא מדוע היה צריך הקב"ה להמתין עשרים וששה דורות, ולהותיר את העולם ללא אורה של תורה זמן רב כל כך. וכי לא היה אברהם אבינו כדאי שתנתן על ידו ובזמנו תורה? וכן יצחק וכן יעקב?</p> <p>...התורה היא ביטוי לשלמות ההרמונית של האלוקות, והיא מבטאת את האלוקות על כל צדדיה. תורת ה׳ הינה תורת נצח שאינה קשורה לזמן, מקום ושפה. הערכים המגולמים בה משקפים את האמת האלוקית על כל רבדיה ומרכיביה, ועל כן יכולה היא להנתן רק לישראל ולא ליחידים, גדולים ככל שיהיו--(שמות ו:ג) וּשְׁמִי ה׳ לֹא נוֹדַעְתִּי לָהֶם.</p> <footer class=source>הרב איתמר אלדר, <a href="https://www.etzion.org.il/he/%D7%A9%D7%99%D7%A2%D7%95%D7%A8-15-%D7%AA%D7%A4%D7%90%D7%A8%D7%AA-%D7%92-%D7%90%D7%A9%D7%A8-%D7%A0%D7%AA%D7%9F-%D7%9C%D7%A0%D7%95-%D7%AA%D7%95%D7%A8%D7%AA-%D7%90%D7%9E%D7%AA"><cite>תפארת (ג): אשר נתן לנו תורת אמת</cite></a></footer></blockquote> Torah has to be given to a <em>nation</em> of individuals, each of whom has their own approach to Torah. That's the only way we can attempt to come close to שלמות ההרמונית של האלוקות. That's why they have to be מוציאן ומכניסן במספר ובשמותם. <hr/> There's another side to this. <blockquote lang=he><p>וימת יוסף וכל אחיו וכל הדור ההוא׃</p> <footer class=source>שמות ו:ו</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>וימת יוסף וכל אחיו וכל הדור ההוא</em>: ללמדך שכל זמן שהיה אחד מהם קיים מאותן שירדו למצרים לא שיעבדו המצריים בישראל.</p> <footer class=source>שמות רבה א:ז</footer></blockquote> Rav Kamenetsky points out that the decree was for (בראשית טו:יג)‎ ידע תדע כי גר יהיה זרעך בארץ לא להם ועבדום וענו אתם ארבע מאות שנה. But the 400 years included all of Yitzchak's and Yaakov's lives. Even though Yitzchak never left the land, it still counted as גר יהיה זרעך: <blockquote lang=he><p>ובאור הדבר הוא כי הגלות תלויה במקבל, והיינו דכל זמן שזרעו של אברהם אבינו חשבו עצמם לגולים במה שאין להם ארץ מיוחדת, אז הרגישו עצמם גולים במה שהם צריכים לישב בארץ טמאה, יצאו בזה ידי חובת גלות, דהרי על כל פנים הרגישו את עצמם בגלות. אבל כשמת אחרון השבטים הרגישו כאילו נפרד הקשר ביניהם ובין ארץ כנען וכאילו מקומם הוא במצרים, והתחילו לבטל ברית מילה (שמות רבה א:ח), אז הוצרכו לגלות יותר קשה בכדי שלא ישכחו את צור מחצבתם, מיד התחיל השעבוד עד שעלתה שעותם, וגו׳.</p> <footer class=source>אמת ליעקב, שמות א: א</footer></blockquote> Yitzchak recognized that he was still a stranger in the land. Yaakov felt himself a native: <blockquote lang=he><p>ויבא יעקב אל יצחק אביו ממרא קרית הארבע הוא חברון אשר <em>גר שם</em> אברהם ויצחק׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית לה:כז</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>וישב</em> יעקב בארץ <em>מגורי אביו</em> בארץ כנען׃</p> <footer class=source>בראשית לז:א</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p> <em>וישב</em>: ביקש יעקב לישב בשלוה, קפץ עליו רוגזו של יוסף. </p> <footer class=source>רש״י, בראשית לז:ב</footer></blockquote> And so, in this model of the אמת ליעקב, he was exiled to Egypt. And his descendants felt they belonged in Egypt, so ה׳ imposed the slavery that made it clear they were still strangers. <hr/> Why was it important that בני ישראל start in גלות? The question is often asked, why was the Torah given in the wilderness? <blockquote lang=he><p> <em>ויחנו במדבר</em>; בדמסיון שלעולם [the most deserted place in the world] מגיד שבדמסיון שלעולם ניתנה להם תורה לישראל. שאלו נתנה בארץ ישראל היו בני ארץ ישראל אומרין שלנו היא ואלו ניתנה במקום אחר היו בני אותו מקום אומרין שלנו היא לפיכך ניתנה להם בדמסיון שלעולם כל הרוצה ליטול יבוא ויטול. </p> <footer class=source>מכילתא דרבי שמעון בר יוחאי יט:ב</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>וידבר ה׳ אל משה במדבר סיני</em>: למה במדבר סיני? מכאן שנו חכמים בג׳ דברים ניתנה התורה, באש, ובמים, ובמדבר...מה אלו חנם לכל באי העולם, כך דברי תורה חנם הם.</p> <footer class=source>במדבר רבה (וילנא) פרשת במדבר פרשה א סימן ז </footer></blockquote> <hr/> I would argue that just as the *place* of the giving of the Torah can't belong to any single nation, so too the *nation* that gets the Torah can't belong to any single place (at least not yet; the conquest of ארץ ישראל has to come *after* מתן תורה. I remember Rabbi Shulman's first <a href="http://youngisrael-stl.org/articlereader.php?artname=G-d%20of%20the%20Hebrews.html&author=shulman">shiur</a> in St. Louis, about the meaning of the word עברי. It's not simply an ethnonym. Pharaoh initially calls them עם בני ישראל: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ח</b> ויקם מלך חדש על מצרים אשר לא ידע את יוסף׃ <b>ט</b> ויאמר אל עמו; הנה <em>עם בני ישראל</em> רב ועצום ממנו׃</p> <footer class=source>שמות פרק א</footer></blockquote> But from the start of שעבוד מצרים, they become עבריים: <blockquote lang=he><p>שמעו לקלך; ובאת אתה וזקני ישראל אל מלך מצרים ואמרתם אליו ה׳ <em>אלקי העבריים</em> נקרה עלינו ועתה נלכה נא דרך שלשת ימים במדבר ונזבחה לה׳ אלקינו׃</p> <footer class=source>שמות ג:יח</footer></blockquote> And the term in the rest of the Torah only uses it in the context of those who are less fortunate: <blockquote lang=he><p>כי ימכר לך אחיך העברי או העבריה ועבדך שש שנים; ובשנה השביעת תשלחנו חפשי מעמך׃</p> <footer class=source>דברים טו:יב</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>כ</b> ויזעק שאול וכל העם אשר אתו ויבאו עד המלחמה; והנה היתה חרב איש ברעהו מהומה גדולה מאד׃ <b>כא</b> <em>והעברים</em> היו לפלשתים כאתמול שלשום אשר עלו עמם במחנה סביב; וגם המה להיות <em>עם ישראל</em> אשר עם שאול ויונתן׃ <b>כב</b> וכל איש ישראל המתחבאים בהר אפרים שמעו כי נסו פלשתים; וידבקו גם המה אחריהם במלחמה׃</p> <footer class=source>שמואל א פרק יד</footer></blockquote> Rabbi Shulman argued that עברי means "the one from the other side": <blockquote lang=he><p><em>העברי</em>: שבא מעבר הנהר.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, בראשית יד:יג</footer></blockquote> Literally, a landless person. There's a term that comes up in many "Ancient Near Eastern" documents, the Hapiru, that many think is related to "Hebrew": <blockquote lang=en><p>[Hapiru represented] an element of society in the Fertile Crescent during the greater part of the second millennium B.C.E...Hittite cult documents place the Habiru at the head of a list of subject and enslaved peoples or classes. From the 15th to the 12th centuries the <i>pr.w</i> appear in Egyptian documents as captives from Palestine-Syria, and as slaves of the state.</p> ...<p>All those called Habiru shared a common inferior status. Almost all were fugitives from their original societies, and, as strangers without rights, they made themselves dependent on lords.</p> <footer class=source>Moshe Greenberg, <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Encyclopedia-Judaica-Set-Author-Stated/dp/B00M0YCK34"><cite>Encyclopaedia Judaica</cite></a>, <cite>Habiru</cite></footer></blockquote> The Torah had to be given to עברים because its message is universal. It is not a law owned by the elites. <blockquote lang=en><p>Master–slave morality is a central theme of Friedrich Nietzsche's works...Nietzsche argued that there were two fundamental types of morality: "master morality" and "slave morality". Master morality values pride and power, while slave morality values things like kindness, empathy, and sympathy.</p> ...<p>The essential struggle between cultures has always been between the Roman (master, strong) and the Judean (slave, weak). Nietzsche condemns the triumph of slave morality in the West, saying that the democratic movement is the "collective degeneration of man".</p> <footer class=source>Wikipedia, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master%E2%80%93slave_morality"><cite>Master–slave morality</cite></a></footer></blockquote> The message of פרשת שמות is that the Torah, the revealed will of G-d, could only be given to those who are נמשלו לכוכבים, all individuals and all equally important.
