Our parasha continues the narrative from פרשת קרח, with a 38-year gap: <blockquote lang=he><p>ויבאו בני ישראל כל העדה מדבר צן בחדש הראשון וישב העם בקדש; ותמת שם מרים ותקבר שם׃</p> <footer class=source>במדבר כ:א</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>בחדש הראשון</em>: בשנת הארבעים, והנה אין בתורה כלל שום מעשה או נבואה רק בשנה הראשונה ובשנת הארבעים.</p> <p> וטעם <em>ויבאו בני ישראל כל העדה</em>: בעבור שמתו דור המדבר, ועתה באו הבאים אל ארץ כנען. </p> <footer class=source>אבן עזרא, במדבר כ:א </footer></blockquote> But in between we have פרק יח, which is the laws of מתנת כהונה. That fits the narrative, since it is a response to the rebellion of Korach. But then we have פרק יט: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>א</b> וידבר ה׳ אל משה ואל אהרן לאמר׃ <b>ב</b> זאת חקת התורה אשר צוה ה׳ לאמר; דבר אל בני ישראל ויקחו אליך פרה אדמה תמימה אשר אין בה מום אשר לא עלה עליה על׃ <b>ג</b> ונתתם אתה אל אלעזר הכהן; והוציא אתה אל מחוץ למחנה ושחט אתה לפניו׃</p> <footer class=source>במדבר פרק יט</footer></blockquote> What is that doing here? It's striking that <em>everyone</em> agrees that it's not part of the narrative; the law of פרה אדמה was given well before this. Even Sforno, who likes the idea that new laws were given during the 40 years in the desert, says that this was from earlier: <blockquote lang=he><p> <em>זאת חקת התורה אשר צוה ה׳</em>: באמרו הזה עליהם מי חטאת. </p> <footer class=source>ספורנו, במדבר יט:ב </footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>ה</b> וידבר ה׳ אל משה לאמר׃ <b>ו</b> קח את הלוים מתוך בני ישראל; וטהרת אתם׃ <b>ז</b> וכה תעשה להם לטהרם הזה עליהם מי חטאת; והעבירו תער על כל בשרם וכבסו בגדיהם והטהרו׃</p> <footer class=source>במדבר פרק ח</footer></blockquote> And Rashi says it was even earlier than that, from right after they left Egypt: <blockquote lang=he><p><b>כב</b> ויסע משה את ישראל מים סוף ויצאו אל מדבר שור; וילכו שלשת ימים במדבר ולא מצאו מים׃ <b>כג</b> ויבאו מרתה ולא יכלו לשתת מים ממרה כי מרים הם; על כן קרא שמה מרה׃ <b>כד</b> וילנו העם על משה לאמר מה נשתה׃ <b>כה</b> ויצעק אל ה׳ ויורהו ה׳ עץ וישלך אל המים וימתקו המים; <em>שם שם לו חק ומשפט</em> ושם נסהו׃</p> <footer class=source>שמות פרק טו</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><em>שם שם לו</em>: במרה נתן להם מקצת פרשיות של תורה שיתעסקו בהם, שבת ו<em>פרה אדומה</em> ודינין. </p> <footer class=source>רש״י, שמות טו:כה </footer></blockquote> <hr/> So why re-learn this law now? Rashi cites the gemara, that פרה אדומה is an introduction to the death of Miriam that follows: <blockquote lang=he><p>א״ר אמי למה נסמכה מיתת מרים לפרשת פרה אדומה לומר לך מה פרה אדומה מכפרת אף מיתתן של צדיקים מכפרת.</p> <footer class=source>מועד קטן כח,א</footer></blockquote> But that seems almost a Christian idea: the death of the righteous brings atonement? How does that work? Rav Schwab explains that the כפרה is in our attitudes toward both פרה אדומה and מיתתן של צדיקים. Both are חוקים in the sense of divine decrees that are beyond our understanding. <blockquote lang=he><p>הנה מקור ענין כפרת הפרה אדומה הוא מדכתיב (במדבר יט:ט) ”למי נדה חטאת היא“, ובארו חז״ל (עבודה זרה כג,ב) ”חטאת קרייה רחמנא“, והיינו שמכפרת על הרהורי האדם...ובהכיר האדם שגזירה היא מלפני הקב״ה ואין לו רשות להרהר, אז עצם הקבלה הזאת...היא היא הנותנת הכח כפרה בפרה אדומה...</p> <p>וכן במיתת מרים שמתה תיקף קודם כניסתם לארץ ישראל, א״כ עולים ברעיוני האדם להתרעם על מדותיו ית׳ הרי היא לא חטאה רק פעם אחת...ולמה לא האריכה ימים יותר...אבל ישראל מאמינים בני מאמינים קבלו גזירותיו ית׳ באהבה בלי שום קושיות, ואז כפרה עצם צדוק הדין על עשתונותיו של האדם ועל הרהורי לבו. וכן בכל מיתת צדיקים מתעוררת הקושיא על מה עשה ה׳ ככה...אך הקבלה באהבה ובהצדקת הדין מכפרת על הרהורי התערומות.</p> <footer class=source>הרב שמעון שווב, מעין בית השואבה, חקת כ:א, עמ׳ שמג</footer></blockquote> <hr/> Ramban (and many others) says the connection is to the laws of מתנת כהונה in the previous chapter: <blockquote lang=he><p>והפרשה הזאת תשלום תורת הכהנים, ונכתבה כאן אחר מתנות כהונה, לומר שגם טהרתן של ישראל על ידי כהן תהיה. </p> <footer class=source>רמב״ן, במדבר יט:ב </footer></blockquote> But this doesn't really fit; פרה אדמה is not a gift to the Kohen. Why this law of all the laws of sacrifices? <hr/> Chizkuni connects it to the previous narrative. We need to learn the laws of פרה אדמה because there are so many dead people lying around: <blockquote lang=he><p><em>זאת חקת התורה</em>: ...באחד בניסן ביום שהוקם המשכן נאמרה...ואף על פי כן נכתב בה כאן לפי שהיו מהם טמאי מתים ממחלוקתו של קרח. </p> <footer class=source>חזקוני, במדבר יט:ב </footer></blockquote> But it's not just those who died in the rebellion of Korach. The paragraph of פרה אדמה summarizes the 38 years when the only thing בני ישראל did was die. They traveled through the Negev--probably spent a סופשבוע at מצפה רמון and on the beach in Eilat--but their job was to be dead, to let the next generation take over. There's nothing more overwhelming, more depressing, than the realization of one's own mortality. This is the argument of קהלת: <blockquote lang=he><p>כי מקרה בני האדם ומקרה הבהמה ומקרה אחד להם כמות זה כן מות זה ורוח אחד לכל; ומותר האדם מן הבהמה אין כי הכל הבל׃</p> <footer class=source>קהלת ג:יט</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=he><p><b>יד</b> יש הבל אשר נעשה על הארץ אשר יש צדיקים אשר מגיע אלהם כמעשה הרשעים ויש רשעים שמגיע אלהם כמעשה הצדיקים; אמרתי שגם זה הבל׃ <b>טו</b> ושבחתי אני את השמחה אשר אין טוב לאדם תחת השמש כי אם לאכל ולשתות ולשמוח; והוא ילונו בעמלו ימי חייו אשר נתן לו האלקים תחת השמש׃</p> <footer class=source>קהלת פרק ח</footer></blockquote> <hr/> And Rav Hirsch makes this nihilism the central point of his understanding of the concept of טומאה: <blockquote lang=en><p>טומאת מקדש וקדשיו places every Jew in the presence of the Sanctuary [which rests] on the truth of moral freedom of the will, and in the presence of the טומאה which is...the lack of freedom of the will which death preaches; and says to him, "be not depressed, let not the fact of death of <em>physical</em> life rob you of, or make you have doubts of, the consciousness of the freedom of your <em>moral</em> spiritual life..."</p> <p>Both spheres, that of טומאה...and that of טהרה...are true, both come from G-d, the one Creator of spiritual nature and physical life...you belong to both realms, but beware of setting foot in the one with the breath of the other upon you.</p> <footer class=source>Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch, ויקרא ה:יג</footer></blockquote> <blockquote lang=en><p>We took it that the conviction of this very first fundamental truth would be endangered by...the fact that man must submit to death and to the superficial limitations which the forces of nature exert on everything including human beings which a dead human body lying before one's eyes, demonstrate so radically. If the *whole* human being has succumbed to death...then altogether nowhere is there place for the moral "thou shalt" next to the physical "thou must".</p> <footer class=source>Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch, במדבר יא:כב</footer></blockquote> טומאה is the realization that nothing matters. It all ends in emptiness. It's the philosophy of nihilism. <hr/> So how can one overcome the טומאה inherent in a mortal life? Rav Hirsch explains the symbolism of the פרה אדמה in great detail, how each aspect is meant to teach that the חוק, the incomprehensibility, of death, can be accepted. We learn the laws of פרה אדמה now, at this point in the narrative, because it is what allowed בני ישראל to continue on in the face of their otherwise pointless existence. I want to mention one detail from Rashi: <blockquote lang=he><p> ומדרש אגדה העתקתי מיסודו של ר׳ משה הדרשן וזהו: <em>ויקחו אליך</em>: משלהם כשם שהם פרקו נזמי הזהב לעגל משלהם כך יביאו זו לכפרה משלהם. <em>פרה אדמה</em>: משל לבן שפחה שטינף פלטין של מלך. אמרו תבא אמו ותקנח הצואה, כך תבא פרה ותכפר על העגל.</p> <footer class=source>רש״י, במדבר יט:כב </footer></blockquote> The mother is the כפרה for the child. The task of the generation that left Egypt wasn't simply to die; it was to <em>create</em> the next generation that would enter the land. To get past the nihilism of death, we need some sense of higher purpose.
