Kavanot:

Thoughts on Tanach and the Davening

After Bilaam blesses בני ישראל three times, he offers one last prophecy:

What does אחרית הימים mean? We often translate it as "the End of Days", the eschaton. The phrase comes up often in תנ״ך:

Rabbi Shulman would understand the phrase simply as "later times", with nothing inherently about "the end of the world", which is how the Netziv translates it:

But I think (as do most commentators) that it really is deeper than that; it refers to what we call

We've discussed this before, but I want to look at different aspect of אחרית הימים.

Now, I'm going to be talking about something I know nothing about, something nobody knows anything about, and something we shouldn't be thinking about anyway:

But "fools rush in" and all that, so I will look at the end of Bilaam's prophecy, when he looks at the קיני, the Midianites related to יתרו. He says they will be exiled by Assyria, who would in turn be conquered by the כתים at the time of שמו א־ל, when G-d's will is imposed:

The כתים are descendants of Greece:

And the Targum (and almost all succeeding commentators) understand this to be Rome:

This is the first mention of the idea of the history of the world being a succession of empires, each of which conquers the next, until in the end the כוכב מיעקב will come and קרקר כל בני שת. This is the traditional Jewish model for the history of the world:

And it has its fullest development in Daniel's visions:

31 Thou O king sawest and behold a great image׃ This image which was mighty and whose brightness was surpassing stood before thee; and the appearance thereof was terrible.
32 As for that image its head was of fine gold its breast and its arms of silver its belly and its thighs of brass;
33 its legs of iron its feet part of iron and part of clay.
...36 This is the dream; and we will tell the interpretation thereof before the king.
37 Thou O king king of kings unto whom the G-d of heaven hath given the kingdom the power and the strength and the glory;
38 and wheresoever the children of men the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven dwell hath He given them into thy hand and hath made thee to rule over them all; thou art the head of gold.
39 And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee; and another third kingdom of brass which shall bear rule over all the earth.
40 And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron; forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and beateth down all things; and as iron that crusheth all these shall it break in pieces and crush.
41 And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes part of potters׳ clay and part of iron it shall be a divided kingdom; but there shall be in it of the firmness of the iron forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay.
...44 And in the days of those kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; nor shall the kingdom be left to another people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms but it shall stand for ever.

Daniel Chapter 2

Similarly, in chapter 7 he has a vision of four beasts and is told that they are four kingdoms. The first three are explicitly named Babylon, Persia and Greece. Of the fourth, he only says:

Thus he said: 'The fourth beast shall be a fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all the kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces.

Daniel 7:23

חז״ל call this the ארבע מלכויות and ארבע גלויות, the four world empires that will exile Israel before משיח redeems us all. The fourth and last is always assumed to be the Roman empire:

But the Ibn Ezra has a problem with this:

The Ramban says Ibn Ezra is not only wrong, but misses the point entirely:

(Artscroll translates רומנאי as the Holy Roman Empire, and התתר as the Tartars, the Mongols)

The argument, I think, is about the entire concept of the succession of kingdoms. Is it a political description of the Land of Israel? If so, we ought to have prophecies of Arabs, Crusaders, Turks and British. But we usually understand the ארבע מלכויות and the entire idea of אחרית הימים as representing something deeper, a clash of cultures, which brings us to Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel's philosophy of history.

[T]he obscurity of Hegel’s thought is legendary, even among philosophers, as is his passion for run-on sentences and obscure technical jargon.

...

Hegel argued that [history], like everything else, contains an essential, rational, necessary nature, which compels it to develop exactly as it does, and which man, because he is rational, can understand. (This conception of history is often signified by writing the word with a capital “H.”) That necessary nature, according to Hegel, is struggle...of self-realization...

This struggle can be understood in terms of “the dialectic process.” First, there is the thesis, a new thing that, by emerging into an already-existing system, always disrupts it in some way. It has to struggle for self-realization in opposition to the antithesis, which can be either the system and its components as they were before, or elements within itself that are not in harmony with its essential nature. Out of this conflict comes synthesis—a new equilibrium that then becomes the thesis of a new dialectic process.

Daniel Halverson, Philosophy of History Part VIII: Hegel’s Dialectic of History

History (with a capital H) is a succession of struggles of ideas like democracy vs. dictatorship, capitalism vs. communism, nationalism vs. cosmopolitanism. Each stage ends with a synthesis of the two sides, setting up the next struggle. But eventually humanity arrives at its ultimate realization, the End of History. For Hegel, that was German nationalism and Protestantism. For Francis Fukayama, it was liberal capitalism democracy:

What we may be witnessing in not just the end of the Cold War, or the passing
of a particular period of post-war history, but the end of history as such: that is,
the end point of mankind's ideological evolution and the universalization of
Western liberal democracy as the final form of human government. This is not to
say that there will no longer be events to fill the pages of Foreign Affairs's yearly
summaries of international relations, for the victory of liberalism has occurred
primarily in the realm of ideas or consciousness and is as yet incomplete in the
real or material world. But there are powerful reasons for believing that it is the
ideal that will govern the material world in the long run.

Francis Fukuyama, The End of History? , The National Interest, Summer 1989

We (meaning Jewish philosophers over the past millenium) have come to a similar idea about the ארבע גלויות. Each represents an aspect of the human psyche that needs to be incorporated into our understanding of G-d's will:

And אחרית הימים thus doesn't mean "the End of Days" in the sense of the destruction of the world: אין בין העולם הזה לימות המשיח אלא שיעבוד מלכייות בלבד, but it means "the End of History". Human society will have reached its ultimate, destined form. The idea is most fully developed in the Maharal:

So we are now in גלות אדום. But that has nothing to do with ancient Edom, or even Rome per se. It the the גלות of Western Civilization:

Mohandas Gandhi was once asked: “What do you think of Western civilization?” “I think it would be a good idea,” he replied.

Apocryphal (but too good to check)

REG: Yeah. All right, Stan. Don't labour the point. And what have they ever given us in return?!

XERXES: The aqueduct?
...

REG: Oh. Yeah, yeah. They did give us that. Uh, that's true. Yeah.

COMMANDO #3: And the sanitation.

LORETTA: Oh, yeah, the sanitation, Reg. Remember what the city used to be like?

REG: Yeah. All right. I'll grant you the aqueduct and the sanitation are two things that the Romans have done.

MATTHIAS: And the roads.

REG: Well, yeah. Obviously the roads. I mean, the roads go without saying, don't they? But apart from the sanitation, the aqueduct, and the roads--

COMMANDO: Irrigation.

XERXES: Medicine.

COMMANDO #2: Education
...

COMMANDO: Public baths.

LORETTA: And it's safe to walk in the streets at night now, Reg.

FRANCIS: Yeah, they certainly know how to keep order. Let's face it. They're the only ones who could in a place like this.
...

REG: All right, but apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system, and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?

Monty Python, The Life of Brian, scene 10

Or, in the version of the gemara:

So Bilaam's vision of צים מיד כתים becomes in this model a vision of the dialectic facing all of us today, between Western Civilization and Torah values. Our goal is to bring about the synthesis that will create the world that the Marahal describes,
